Q&A's With Cp and Herm 7-27

Q&A with CARL PETERSON - 7/27
Jul 27, 2006, 6:09:27 PM

TRAINING CAMP

CARL PETERSON: “We’re happy to have both Tamba (Hali) and Brodie Croyle and it was pretty well acknowledged that they wanted to be here. They were in Kansas City waiting for the go-ahead. It was a five-year deal with Tamba, the 20th pick of the first round, and a four-deal with Brodie Croyle.”

Q: Were you at all nervous that you weren’t going to get it done in time for camp?

PETERSON: “I was always cautiously optimistic. Again, I want to give a lot of credit again to (Chief Operating Officer) Denny Thum and (Mgr. of Player Compensation)Woody Dixon who do such a great job with our cap and contract. They stayed at it last night and again this morning. With the number of first round draft picks signing around us, which was 19th and 21st picks done, it was pretty obvious where Tamba fit in. I know that he’s very excited about being here and both he and Brodie were not going to miss this.

“Let me say this: we have 91 players. We have 88 with us right now; three are excused. That’s Ty Law, Willie Roaf and Priest Holmes. They’re excused for personal reasons and we’ll update you on that later. Everybody else is here that should be here and all are under contract.

“Tomorrow before practice we will announce who will be on PUP (physically unable to perform). Frankly, we have a fair number in comparison to past years. It’s simply a precautionary category for players so that they can start slowly at camp. It’s usually players coming off post-season surgery or some type of injury. They may be activated within a day or a week or a month. We’ll give that list to you tomorrow.”

Q: Where do you stand with Eddie Kennison right now?

PETERSON: “I stand just fine with Eddie. Eddie’s under contract; Eddie’s on the plane and Eddie’s going to get himself ready to play another year with the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Q: Does it concern you at all that he might leave camp?

PETERSON: “No concern at all. If a player wants to leave it’s his choice. It’s $14,000 a day (NFL fine) and after five days you can send a letter that eliminates a player’s participation for the (coming) year. I would be very surprised and very disappointed with that.”

Q: He says he’s disappointed with his contract. Is trying to resolve this dispu a priority for you?

PETERSON: “We have a lot of people who are unhappy with their contracts. It’s amazing. Every player would like to make more money and I appreciate that, but there is only so much cap and cash. I have had that conversation with Eddie and he knows exactly where the Kansas City Chiefs on this matter. He’s here and he’s going to practice and, frankly, I don’t care to talk about it any more.”

Q: Why is Willie Roaf not here?

PETERSON: “Personal reasons, like Priest Holmes. We do expect him. Herm and I have talked with his agent and the same thing with Priest. These are veteran guys and they don’t have to be here the very first days. They have some personal things to take care of as does Ty Law. We respect that but we do expect Ty very shortly.”

Q: Is it about Willie’s contract?

PETERSON: “No, not at all.”

Q: When do you expect these three?

PETERSON: “Well, we expect Ty pretty soon and the other two we haven’t set a date yet. We’re going to continue to give them some time.”

Q: With Priest’s health is there any way to tell at this point if he will play or not?

PETERSON: “It’s very difficult to tell at this point Like we said, tomorrow we’ll announce the players on PUP and anticipate very much that he will be one of those players.”

Q&A with HERM EDWARDS - 7/27
Jul 27, 2006, 6:17:34 PM

TRAINING CAMP ARRIVAL

EDWARDS: “I think we’re both excited as a staff to finally get up to training camp and really find out what type of team we are going to become. Here you form your toughness, as far as I am concerned, as a football team and the players are generally off this evening, they have curfew, and then tomorrow we will start our meetings and go on the field in the afternoon. What’s great is that all of our draft picks got signed. They’re all here and you always hope that for your young players that they will be here. You don’t want any of your draft picks missing any days. At this point the players are probably trying to get their cars and trying to figure out if their beds are soft enough and whatever it may be. I’m excited about being here; I was actually up here yesterday. I flew up yesterday on my own and toured the campus, all the meeting facilities, the fields and did some things a little big different. It’s a good facility that they have us in and I think that our guys are excited about being here.”

Q: How do you deal with the possibility that WR Eddie Kennison might leave camp due to his contract?

EDWARDS: “I don’t worry about stuff like that. All I can control are the players that come to practice each day. There are going to be players that obviously get nicked up and you have to continue to practice no different than the way that it was. In the spring we had a bunch of guys that were nicked up and the next guy gets an opportunity to practice and play. I don’t worry about that stuff and you can’t. All you can do is worry about the guys that are here and it’s not about one player, it’s about a bunch of players. We are trying to formulate the 53 guys who are going to make the football team so that’s all I concern myself with. All that other stuff belongs to Carl (Peterson), Denny (Thum) and the powers that be. I coach the football team.”

Q: Is it more important that DE Tamba Hali is here than the other draft picks that signed since he has a chance to make some big contributions for you?

EDWARDS: “I think that it is important that all of them are here. Whether you are a first-round or a seventh-round pick, if you’re a rookie guy you need to be in training camp, you need to be here when it starts and I think that’s important. It sets a precedent about what type of player you are and you want to be here. You can say well, I can miss a day or two, don’t miss a day or two just be here. If you want to be a player in the National Football League find a way to get it done and a way to be here. I think all the parties between their agents and our organization got it done and I’m excited.”

Q: Does it concern you that T Willie Roaf is not here right away?

EDWARDS: “No, because he wasn’t in the spring. That’s the great thing about it, we signed T Kyle Turley and we’ve got some young guys who will get a lot of opportunities to participate and that is how we are going to go.’

Q: How do you line up at left tackle tomorrow?

EDWARDS: “The same way that we did in the spring right now. We are going to start that way at this point and we could switch it and that’s what’s great about training camp. Now we have pads on, it’s going to be a little bit different now. We are not in shorts and we are going to find out who the guys are that are violent players and that are tough players and that’s what training camp is supposed to do.”

Q: You have three veterans who are not here, why are they any different than the rookies potentially not being here?

EDWARDS: “Because they have personal reasons and I don’t think that for veteran guys who are 30 years old, they’ve been in enough training camps. Just like you, you’ve been through enough training camps too haven’t you? Well ok then, same thing goes for a veteran football player.”

Q: Did you know that CB Ty Law and T Willie Roaf would not be here for the start of camp?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, I knew that. So that’s ok and that’s fine.”

Q: How long do you expect for them to gone?

EDWARDS: “Ty will be here probably sooner than those guys. He had some things that he had to get done and we talked about that way before he even signed here.”

Q: What do you hope to get worked out here over the next few weeks?

EDWARDS: “Some of the positions where the depth is very competitive. I think inside guys at tackle defensively I think that’s important. Finding out who our tackles are going to be on offense. Who is the second running back? Who is the fourth receiver? I think those things need to be addressed. That’s what I think is good about training camp, we’re going to compete and find out who ends up winning some jobs. I think at the other positions for the most part there is competition, which is good. There are some young guys who we want to see play and it sets up for a very good, competitive training camp and that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Oh shit son, he did not just say that!

CP seems to be taking a hard nosed approach with kennison. Worrysom

JimNasium 07-27-2006 07:02 PM

WTF is the deal with Willie?

dirk digler 07-27-2006 07:04 PM

I am starting to get very, very concerned about Roaf. The guy has been MIA all off season.

An older guy like Roaf doesn't need a full training camp to be ready. Also I doubt sleeping in a tiny bed in a dorm is good for a man his size, just being leniat with him so he feels good for the season is my guess.

The way they sound it doesn't look like he is coming in anytime soon.

We are ****ed if we lose Roaf.

Mecca 07-27-2006 07:14 PM

I think Roaf is fine, I think it is partially a matter of his age and him not needing a full training camp. Alot of times things like training camp especially when you have to travel and stay in a dorm can make an older player decide to retire.

big nasty kcnut 07-27-2006 07:21 PM

Roaf will be ok.

FloridaMan88 07-27-2006 07:24 PM

Considering the Chiefs have done nothing to address the left tackle position behind Roaf, I assume that even Peterson can't be dumb enough to not address the position either in the draft or in free agency if he wasn't 100% certain that Roaf would be playing this season

Turley

Mecca 07-27-2006 07:34 PM

I hope for the sake of this team Roaf has 2 more years in him because the tackle crop for next years draft is pretty crappy.......

Heck I just hope he decides not to retire in the next few weeks.

It'd definitely odd. Usually Willie at least shows up, DV just gave him lots of time off. Hopefully Bob Dole's comments don't come true. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

This has got to be one of the dumbest questions I have seen in a while.

Damn that hurt

Roaf knows that this is his chance for a SB ring...he won't pass that opportunity up.

Chiefs Pantalones 07-27-2006 08:11 PM

I'm not concerned. Roaf will be there, and the Kennison situation will get worked out.

tomahawk kid 07-27-2006 08:14 PM

This whole Roaf deal is starting to piss me off.

If you're going to retire - fucking do it already.

If you're going to play, show up to camp. It's not that hard.

Just stop stringing everyone along.

Most of the questions these guys ask are dumb. where do they get these idiots?

rocks 07-27-2006 08:17 PM

A few weeks ago I saw Turley on the NFL network and they asked him about the line. His answer was:
IF Willie plays the line we will be fine. (not verbatium) my memory is not that good. But the part that got me was IF. I thought Willie was in the fold?

the Talking Can 07-27-2006 08:18 PM

CP to Kennison: "Fat chance....next question?"

I really don't think it has to do with retirement. He just needs the time off more than any of them, IMO. If you see him in person, you'd see a guy that looks like he got the crap knocked out of his legs. He can barely walk. It's like Charlie Murphy beat his legs to death or something.

rocks 07-27-2006 08:21 PM

What about Svitek? I thought he had a blow great Euro season and he looked good (for a rookie) in camp last year. Pissed Allen off more than once.

I remember that, too, actually, now that you mention that. He also said in the 4 downs that he would start this year with the Chiefs, whether it be right or left tackle... :hmmm:

Chan93lx50 07-27-2006 08:25 PM

Come on Roaf I know you have enough gas in the tank for one more year!

All the hype I have going into this season will blow right out my ass if Roaf retires

kcxiv 07-27-2006 08:46 PM

DO some research on other sites. On another site, someone justheard a Turley interview and he just said that Roaf may not play. Roaf's Legs are really bothering him. I want him to play, but i dont know if he can.

Cormac 07-27-2006 08:51 PM

Roaf will play. There is no way he'd be taking until now to decide that he has to retire. Besides, having just signed Ty Law, he knows the organisation is dedicated to doing the best they can. And on top of that, there is the question of 2000 yards for LJ. He's not there for personal reasons. I bet that reason is he is hardly excited about his 15th (or whatever) training camp.

I have no doubt in my mind that he "wants" to play. Its a matter of will his body let him. He is giving his body a chance to recover. If his knee's cant hold up no matter how bad he wants to play he wont be able too. Rumors have it that his body is aching big time.

This is it for Roaf. He will be done this year. I hope there is some free agent worthy of taking over. I doubt seriously the light bulb comes on for any of the current crop of understudies.

Aren't you always promoting other sites? You don't need to go to another site, Bob Dole heard the same thing from the horse's mouth months ago.

Putting mouth and month next to each other looks funny.

i dont promote shit. I visit plenty of sites, and post in a few. Even if Bob Dole reported whatever, most peeps on here dont even know about it.

booger 07-27-2006 10:32 PM

Last year was pretty much the same with Shields and Roafs reversed in how they felt in the offseason heading into TC. Remember Shields had arthritic knees and bad back pain that really nagged him. He underwent physical therapy and DV took it easy on he and Roaf among others to take the stress of their bodies.

This year it looks flipped around.

Roaf came off an ACL tear his last year in NO, the hamstring last year, and rumor of another hamstring injury this offseason while training. ( can't remember where i heard the last one and it is RUMOR as far as I know) Not to mention the hellish bouts he has had with gout.

I don't doubt that he really wants to play. As far as his contract, didn't they just recently throw more $$$ incentive at him for this year to try to make it easier for him to stay another year?

Also you can go back to the team site and watch today's Q/A with herm. They ask him who lines up at LT and RT tommorrow. He says same as OTA's. Teicher asks is that Black at LT and Turley at RT. Herm says yes but we could flop them around.

Also when asked about camp position battles he mentioned it will be interesting to see who our OT's are. I took it as both starters and depth.

I think Roaf is probably having a tough time with this and giving him more time, as much as he needs is in our best interest. Definatley doesn't help the nervousness of the situation though.
