The Old Chicago "World Beer Tour"

I started the WBT in November, and my, this has truly been an adventure. For those who don't know what the World Beer Tour is, it is a rewards program for..well..drinking beer. Here is how it works:

1. Sign up for a WBT Card
2. Enter all personal information
3. Drink beer! Every beer you drink gets recorded on the card. You must drink a DIFFERENT beer each time to get credit for it.

I have reached 105 beers. 5 more, and I will have completed the World Beer Tour, and have my name emblazoned on the "Hall of Foam", a plaque in the store. Throughout the tour, I have earned other rewards, such as a deck of cards, a compass, a cooler, a hat, and many t-shirts from the various "Mini-Tours" (Cinco De Mayo, St Patricks day, etc).

Here are some of the best beers i've tried:

Here are some of the WORST beers i've had:

http://www.40ozmaltliquor.com/pbr.jpg
And of course, Corona, Heineken, and all that shit. I managed to avoid Bud/Bud light.

I still have 5 more to go. Any suggestions, that they may have? I'm thinking Tsingtao (haven't had an asian beer yet), some sort of Samuel Smith product, or an Italian beer (can't remember their names).

Fishpicker 08-17-2006 02:31 PM

Tsingtao is ok, tastes alot like Lowenbrau to me. IIRC Old Chicago doesnt offer a lot of asian beers. Kir-in and Beer Lao are pretty good.

I dig Murphy's

I've found just about anything Ireland has to offer, I enjoy. Smithwicks is my favorite, though. Might be my favorite beer overall.

ChiefFan31 08-17-2006 02:37 PM

Anchor Steam is mmm mmmm Good

OnTheWarpath15 08-17-2006 02:42 PM

Don't know if they have it, but have you tried Stella Artois from Belgium?

I wish they had an Old Chicago here. But id try a German beer, there is this one awesome one but I forgot the name. Something like Guerst Haus.

StcChief 08-17-2006 02:50 PM

Bell's Ale from Michigan

sedated 08-17-2006 02:59 PM

tsingtao is nothing special.

Sammy Smith has never let me down

BigVE 08-17-2006 03:06 PM

McCewans Scottish Ale is one of our favorites...wifey likes the Snake Bite.

Gonzo 08-17-2006 03:09 PM

My boss has done this twice. Does this mean he's an over-achiever or an alcoholic?

Wrasse 08-17-2006 03:13 PM

I don't know what they have there but some of my favs:

Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout
Weihenstephaner Hefe Weisen
Ayinger Ur Weisse (Dunkel)
If they have trappist ales: Orval, Koningshoeven (quadrupel - Holland's only trappist ale), Chimay (not bad but get the grand reserve)
Palauner Salvator
Spaten Optimator
Franziskaner Weisse and Dunkel (Spaten)
Samuel Adams (one of the few well-known American beers that I do like)

To name a few...damn I'm going to the beer store tonight now...

Yeah, not bad. They make a drink called the "Belgian Brunette", Stella on the bottom, Guinness on top.

Ceej 08-17-2006 03:18 PM

Hey Saul, try that chili beer. :)

C'mon you girl. It's ON the list. :)

It's not that bad, really. Not very warm.

I take it you don't like warm things. Not temperature wise.

Rausch 08-17-2006 03:25 PM

Those people ****ing suck.

They only allow 6 beers a night to count. **** that. I could finish Europe on a sunday...

Baby Lee 08-17-2006 03:33 PM

They got Lambics on the list?

Nummy!!

teedubya 08-17-2006 03:35 PM

Yeah Smithwicks is a great beer... I had my first one compliments of Phobia.

GoodDaySir! 08-17-2006 03:50 PM

Hey Saul, I once tried some chili flavored pepper with a pepper inside the bottle at Old Chicago. Made my stomach burn for hours. Do you remember this or have you tried it yet?

I've just heard it's really, really nasty.

Ah, didn't even see you post this. If you are trying to take it easy and not get sloshed, this is definetly the beer to go with. I imagine a 6er would give you the shitz for a week.

Saulbadguy 10-12-2007 08:45 AM

I'm 1 away from finishing Tour #2. I know, shameless bump to toot my own horn, but dammit, i've accomplished something grand!

Here are some of the fine ales and lagers that have made up the best of the 2nd:

Peroni is really good.

Dartgod 10-12-2007 09:50 AM

Bridgeport brews some damn fine beer.

kcfan82 10-12-2007 05:40 PM

I just finished mine 2 months ago, the prizes along the way are better than the sweatshirt they give you as a final prize.

Well I need to go back to Olathe to see if they put my name on the plaque yet.

Also when I finished, the waiter brought my wife and I a bottle of oak barrell aged Chimnay free of charge, now THAT is some good beer.

Phobia 10-12-2007 05:45 PM

I remember back when you didn't even like beer. It's like I'm watching you grow up right before my very eyes.

Congrats.

OnTheWarpath15 10-12-2007 05:48 PM

Peroni is one of my favorites.....

NewChief 10-12-2007 08:50 PM

Boooo on dogging the Old Style. Probably my favorite "daily" beer.

Yay on the 90 Schilling. Odell makes some awesome brews.

There's something about O'dell that isn't quite right for me. I've toured their facility and there's something off about their brews. The 90 Shilling is about the only one I'd pay for.

Really? That's surprising to me, though I'll confess that 90 and Bobby were the main two I drank. You may or may not have been able to sample Bobby, because it's a seasonal summer brew. It's awesome, though. Easy-drinking beer that's actually fairly complex.

Phobia 10-12-2007 09:04 PM

I've never had the Bobby. To be fair, we had just toured New Belgium Brewery and I'm rather partial to Lambics so for me it was like eating Filet and then going to Top Sirloin.

I love O'Dell brews. I've tried the 90 Shilling, 5 Barrel Pale Ale and Isolation Ale (their winter seasonal) and all are very good, IMO.
