First Drive - Our D against NY's O - TIVO review

I just finished watching the first drive on TIVO.

Wow, it was bad

1) It's getting old but the first play was an end around to Hicks side and he got sucked inside and then was EASILY sealed by the blocker. As it's been said he doesn't have the speed or the strength to play anymore.

2) When we defend against the run (no pass rush) BOTH of our ends can be run blocked by Tight Ends. Jared is ok or average against the run but Hicks gets dominated by a TE.

3) For some reason our DB's were playing super soft. Maybe this is to disguise the plan to jam the receivers at the LOS plan we'll use at the beginning of the season otherwise it makes NO sense. Ty Law gave up an easy third down because he was playing so soft.

4) Jared got completely dominated and put on his back inside the five yard line on a running play. I think it was the tackle who did it but he's just too soft at the point in goaline sets.

5) Kawika dropped WAY to deep into the endzone on the touchdown and it left the middle wide open. What's he doing one yard off the end line in the endzone? He just ran himself out of the play. Kawika isn't quite there in reading the pass in his drops. I think he'll get better but both he and Johnson just drop into their zone without keying off the QB then they react.

6) Where's Bell? he's just................ out there ??? Fox doesn't meet the ballcarrier with force. He has bad tackling and is lunging at the ballcarrier instead of exploding into him.

7) The DT's weren't getting any penetration and sometimes get pushed back which screws all the angles up for the LB's to fill at the LOS.

Lots of work to do. Hicks should be on the bench or IMO cut.

On the positive side I do believe KC is hiding a lot of the scheme and they will get better when they start pressing with the DB's at the LOS.

isn't anyone going to comment on my review :( <sniff>

MOhillbilly 08-18-2006 03:56 PM

this thread is useless w/out TIVO.

Halfcan 08-18-2006 03:59 PM

It sounds worse than I thought.

A bunch of Jets fans have advised us just to lie there and take it, assuring us it'll all be over soon.
As a token of our esteem, we are heeding their sage advice.

The Defense(1st half)...
I believe Hicks is done. He should be in the next round of cuts. I thought Wilkerson did a pretty good job. I also have Tivo and noticed #96 and #71 James Reed around the ball alot. I thought Kawika did a pretty good job, he's not perfect. He did make some good open-field tackles. Bell was average and DJ made a few good plays. Overall, I thought they did ok, nothing special. I'm not going to throw in the towel yet. I do believe Tamba Hali and Wilkerson will make a difference. Wesley seemed to be playing with more intensity as does Knight. Surtain was Surtain and Law is probably getting the rust off as well as learning this new scheme. I think Hicks should be cut soon...

The offense...

Not a whole lot to say about the starters. I'm bummed they weren't able to score. Turley is going to take some time to get the rust off as is Sampson. Waters will return and make an immediate impact. The rest of the guys are what they are. I would like to see Samie Parker play a full season...

BigChiefFan 08-18-2006 04:03 PM

All of that on the first drive?

Mitchell can only cover 1 man-it looks like a blown assignment by DJ on the TD.

morphius 08-18-2006 04:04 PM

I thought it was pretty obvious who Kawika was dropping to cover, only issue was that someone else snuck in the zone and there was nobody else to cover him.

What a classic day on the planet! Thanks to all of the J-E-T-S fans and our mod for providing a very entertaining day at work for me. Thanks again

You could be right as I thought it was DJ's man too at first but when I replayed it several times it seemed to me that since it was to Kawika's side it was his zone. Even if it wasn't his area he's not going to be able to disrupt anything that close to the end line. Shouldn't both DJ and Kawika defend the goaline on a play like that?

No biggie, hopefully we can all just let it go. No reason for this JetsInsider\CP thing to keep on going. The users banned acted in a trollish manner. The ones who didn't are still able to post here if they contribute to this board. Hopefully we can clear more of this up with a clearing by their mods to psot a few explanations on JI. We'll see...

booger 08-18-2006 04:19 PM

I'm sure she has been called worse.

I would be shocked if that a mod would say such a thing.

Just poking fun at Htis

Yep, all of that happened on the first TD drive.

Rain Man 08-18-2006 04:25 PM

I wonder if we could arrange some kind of negotiated settlement with other teams. On every play where Hicks lines up at left end, we'll automatically give the other team a seven-yard gain in exchange for a down. I think it could limit our damage quite a bit.

Eric "snoopy" Hicks - if he gets pet he goes down. Im done with him, and I hope the Chiefs are too. (I said in another thread - its like why not run a boot or a reverse against him)

I really need to watch the game again, but that is discomforting reading about the play of Jared Allen.

I really think (hope) Herm is sticking with vanilla even if it has put a large amount of Chiefs fans in a colon shriveling panicked state.

Kawika was too deep, but he was following another receiver. He basically blew his assignment as that receiver was already covered. I did read that it was a pick play, but that is not what I saw.

I need to re-watch this one again to really comment, but I would bet Key Fox was getting damn tired from being out on the field all damn night.

Yes, the play of the DT has been anything but dominant, and its scary.

Agreed. I think they really are hiding a lot of the scheme. I really look for us to Rally back at Arrrowhead. I think its going to make a big difference being back there for the last two preseason and the first home game.

However, Our O-line still needs to step up big time regardless. I mean what is next week going to be Turley/Bober/Weigman/Black/Sampson - My God..YIKES!!!

Edit - my bad. I think Waters will be back, but with Shields in a boot I would imagine he is done for the preseason...

I don't like it. Sounds too much how John Kerry/Nancy Pelosi/Ted Kennedy or Ned LaMont would play defense if they were our coordinators :)

Here's what I don't get about Hicks... I played DE in Junior High / High School / College. I'm attaching my Junior High defensive playbook. It made my job very easy, and I got very good at it, making all league, all state and getting a scholarship out of it. I NEVER FORGOT MY JR HIGH PLAYBOOK.

(and yes, before you count, I played 8man in jr / sr high.. wanna fight about it?)

Maybe Herm needs to take a lesson from Coach Tucker.

Go Lopers!

I played DE at the KS 2A level. Same responsibility, get up field, but not too wide and hold containment. If the QB runs the option hit him every time and don't worry if he pitches it or not. Why KC's ends don't contain is beyond me.
