Favorite Potato Chips?

What is everyone's favorite kind of potato chip?

One of, if not the only good things, to come from St. Louis is my favorite kind of chips: Old Vienna's Red Hot Riplets

I don't think they are sold outside of St. Louis

They are so good

Do they have Cape Cod chips in KC? I just discovered them last summer-IMHO, there are potato chips, and then there are Cape Cod potato chips. They have them in Aged Cheddar and Garlic and Jalapeno, Cracked Pepper and Sea Salt, Traditional, Russet, and BBQ.

Adept Havelock 02-01-2007 05:34 PM

Classic Pringles. By a conincidence, one of my favorite fiction authors (Gene Wolfe) helped invent the machine and process that makes them.

That, and leaving the last few chips in the bottom of the can makes a decent "instant intelligence test" when you hand it to someone.

JBucc 02-01-2007 05:34 PM

I used to like regular Lays, but recently I've moved over to the baked version, and even more towards the Cheddar and Sour cream ones.

BIG_DADDY 02-01-2007 05:36 PM

Kettle's sea salt and vinegar.

BucEyedPea 02-01-2007 05:38 PM

Cape Cod chips of course....even the 40% less fat taste like nothing's missing in flavor. Terrific crunched on top of my tuna casserole or with a lobster salad sandwich.

UteChief 02-01-2007 05:38 PM

Do doritos count because I think they are corn chips?

Please tell me that NO ONE does that...

Donger 02-01-2007 05:40 PM

You know, after all these years, I still sometimes get mixed up. I almost responded "McDonalds'"

Do you put malt vinegar on fish and chips? I use malt vinegar on anything deep fried, especially if it is battered, and these (surprise!) rednecks in Northern California I work with act as if I'm insane for doing it.

Of course. I usually ask for old newspaper, too.

We had fish and chips at our cafeteria once and I used the malt vinegar. One of my fellow employees saw me doing this and, knowing that I am a Bronco fan, asked if that was the way it was done in Colorado. I was fairly surprised and told her that no, that's the way it's done in the rest of the entire known world.

Malt Vinegar sucks. So does the rest of the world. So do the Broncos.

DaKCMan AP 02-01-2007 06:16 PM

Lays Sour Cream & Onion or Original Baked Lays or Cape Cod

for the record, sun chips > potato chips

Sun Chips are great. If I had to choose two snack food things it would be French Onion Sun Chips and Gardetto's.

Pringles was actually sued by makers of potato chips, on the argument that their product was a processed foodstuff that did not qualify for 'chip' labelling, and that labelling them as chips was an unfair trade practice.

There are two authentic Kansas City chips:
1) Kitty Clover (no longer made) and
2) Guy's Chips.

Don't forget the Guys!

Attempting to reach into the can, instead of simply turning the can upside down.

Thanks BL- I'd never heard about that lawsuit.

I remember when my family came to America and we went to the store looking for salt and vinegar chips. Well, we asked for salt & vinegar crisps. Once we cleared THAT up, the guy still looked at us like we were from Mars. It's neat that so many people seem to like them now.

Rain Man 02-01-2007 08:36 PM

You can't beat those salt and vinegar chips. They rule.

We've got a brand here in Denver that's called something like "Nantucket Chips" or something. I find that funny since they're made in Denver. I'm not sure why the founders think that claiming to be made in Massachusetts is better. Is Massachusetts a hotbed of potato chip technology or something?

Tribal Warfare 02-01-2007 08:39 PM

They sell those up here in Washington and you're right, they're not too bad. I don't eat potato chips hardly ever anymore though.

When I was a kid I liked to eat ones that I think were called pizzarias. I just remember that they were made by Kebbler, but I don't think they make them anymore.

Joie 02-01-2007 09:10 PM

I like Wavy Lays or KC Masterpiece Lays. Pringles have a bit of a cardboard flavor to them.

CoMoChief 02-01-2007 09:55 PM

I like Krunchers Jalepeno and Pringles Cheez Ums.

I can relate to that-but I save the half bag and eat it the next day, or the day after-seems they stay fresh for at least a couple days.
