Stuff used in paint, and some automotive chemicals, etc.

I-35 is shut down at Armour Rd now.

I can see the flames across the river, the column of fire is enormous.

Amazing. This episode reminds me of the tornado that came through downtown Nashville several years ago. I was able to watch it blow through the city from my office building. The tornado blew out hundreds of windows in the high rises and snatched up millions of 8x10 pieces of paper. The paper looked like giant flocks of birds circulating in the air.

From the wide shot on the feed, the smoke cloud is enormous. This can't be good. Is the wind blowing toward a populated area?

Tornadoes are funny that way, Mr. Baby Lee. I'm sure you've heard stories about how a tornado will pick up some things and, inexplicably, ignore others.

For example, they'll pick up a house on one street and replace it with a barn from another town. Then, they'll pick up a car and replace it with a truck. Personally, I think that's why they should be called tradewinds.

The news on that linked video feed mentioned that the heat was too intense for anyone to get near the fire. Maybe they still can't get close enough to hook them up, or perhaps they can't clear debris on the tracks.

Quote:

KANSAS CITY, MO. -- The ChemCentral plant fire at 910 North Prospect in Kansas City, Missouri died down considerably overnight. Thursday morning, the fire department collapsed the perimeter surrounding the fire to a three block radius. No one is allowed in.

Wednesday night, the fire department put foam on the fire to help it and then decided against it because it presented more hazards. They decided to let it burn, and make an assessment at daylight Thursday morning.

Thursday morning, they did decide to send firefighters back in to try to finish off the remaining hot spots.
Other stuff here

Frazod 02-08-2007 09:56 AM

I assume that if anyone had died or been badly injured it would have been reported (of course, that's probably the main reason all the national media attention melted away - no body count). Considering how violent the explosions were, that's certainly a good thing. Better to be unemployed than blown to bits.

It turns out it was indeed George Bush's fault. In fact, his daughter Jenna threw a cigarette into a large drum of mineral spirits to spark the explosion. Saddam Hussein refused to comment.

Yup, no major injuries from what I heard last night.

crazycoffey 02-08-2007 10:52 AM

amazing, I saw some on tv and online, what chemical does that plant produce? Guess if there aren't any "time to leave" notices it isn't bad???? I'm in St. Louis, so I'm not personally effected, but I don't know if I would trust the chemical plant to be forthcoming of that information. Probably want to leave for a while anyway. The "raining" of the black cloud looked bad on the respiratory system at the least.

Dartgod 02-08-2007 11:33 AM

I'm hearing on the radio right now (99.7KY) that there have just been four more explosions inside the building.

What a shortsighted view.

Lets look at the positives, shall we?

1. Firemen get to use their equipment
2. Insurance adjusters, agents and mathematicians all are provided job security
3. Cleanup and disposal crews, salvage materials and landfill workers are also further employed...not to mention the environmental specialists called in to monitor the smoke and potential contaminations.
3. Architects, Mechanchal, Civil and Design engineers all participate in the reconstruction, not to mention Zoning administrators, building inspectors and the fees they'll collect for the Govt Entity during the rebuild.
4. Excavation, Concrete, framing, pipefitters, electricians, sheetmetal, insullation workers among others, now have a new project securing their continued employment.

5. Workers of this plant will now be in better, up to date and safer working conditions, in a new facility filled with products manufactured across the nation.

This unfortunate fire has actually helped Stimulate the Economy.

Mathematicians?

I see your tic....but I would bet $5 that they don't rebuild at that site.
Your items 1 through 3(a) will all take place, some at taxpayer expense.
Items 3(b) through 5 will take place in China, or some other under regulated, low wage country. Say goodby to those local wages.

(oh...and a $5 bet is pretty significant for a tightwad like me.)
