I don't buy that CNN called it Chinklish. After the recent media frenzy when Rosie O'Donnell mocked the Chinese language, the media world found out that the Asian community was just as sensitive as the black and gay communities, and they would not make that mistake.

They may have called it CHING-lish, but that didn't say what you said. What you said is racist.

Chink is a racial slur. I doubt very much CNN said that. They may have said Chineglish, which may sound a little like Chinklish.

It's not personally offensive to me, but I wouldn't use the term.

According to Princeton a chink is a narrow opening as e.g. between planks in a wall. Perhaps some people saw the similarities between the narrow slits between the fence post and chinamans eyes.

Although when it comes to racist terms I don't think the term actual has to mean anything. Take for example the term "coon". How did that become a racist term and what does it mean? Now porch monkey, I could see how a dark skinned person would get offended at being compared to a monkey, but how would being called a coon be offensive? They are kind of cute, and furry.
