Name the Sports Records you think will never be beat...

I'll go with 2, Byron Nelson in 1945, 11 straight wins and a total of 18 that same year.........

What say you Planeteers ?

Hydrae 07-29-2007 09:15 AM

DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak

HonestChieffan 07-29-2007 09:16 AM

My hitting streak in High School

SCTrojan 07-29-2007 09:17 AM

Johnny Vandermeer's two consecutive no-hitters. In order to break it, someone would obviously have to throw three consecutive. Won't happen. Not ever.

kcfan82 07-29-2007 09:18 AM

Carl Petersons streak of bumbled draft picks

FAX 07-29-2007 09:19 AM

Cal Ripken's 2130 consecutive games, or whatever the number was.

FAX

There are truely several records that will never be broke ........

pikesome 07-29-2007 09:20 AM

I'd have to think the Dolphins' single season record would be high on the list. The way the NFL runs now makes it hard for a team to play to win for 16 games and then win throughout the playoffs. I don't want to say it's the hardest but it's pretty damn hard.

I agree , Very unlikely .......

Ryan Sims' record for most pure lard consumed in a single off-season.

With the way kids get hurt now days and coaches giving them days off ? I agree ..........

chefsos 07-29-2007 09:23 AM

Cy Young, 511 wins. Different game now, and no one will come close.

Ultra Peanut 07-29-2007 09:24 AM

Hank Aaron's 755. Sorry A-Rod, but even you're going to have trouble getting there.

Coogs 07-29-2007 09:25 AM

Georgia Tech's 212 points in one football game.

Yeah, that one seems monumentally unreachable. I thought about that one as well.

It's funny that most of the records that popped into my head were baseball related.

The non-baseball related record that occurred to me was the Lakers' 33-game winning streak.

Hammock Parties 07-29-2007 09:28 AM

Larry Johnson's TD record.

Some, yes, but to do what Byron Nelson done ? No way.

Nelson would have been the greatest ever to play had he not retired after the 46 season at the age of 34. He wanted his ranch more than golf..........

If it wasn't for stats baseball as a major sport would have died a long time ago, IMO.

UCLA's 88 consecutive basketball victories. No matter how good a squad a coach could put together today, the players wouldn't be in school long enough for that kind of streak.

Frazod 07-29-2007 09:43 AM

I think Ty Cobb's lifetime average of .366 is pretty safe.

True ......... Plus the 10 consecutive cheating National Championships fits right up there as well.

I would say that is probally pretty safe as well Tim, but it could fall one day. What are the requirements ? # of at bats to qualify for a lifetime average.........

Adept Havelock 07-29-2007 09:52 AM

Jim Brown's Lifetime Yards Per Carry- 5.5

Cy Young- 511 Career Wins

From www.baseball-reference.com:

Minimum of 1000 IP, 3000 PA and 100 decisions for career and active leaderboards for rate statistics.

The only person within 30 points of him in the modern era is Gwynn.

Cy Young was already mentioned, it's a safe one.........

Jime Browns average....... safe for now, probally won't ever be broke, but it is possible that somebody could fall right along the minimum required carries to qualify one day.

DaKCMan AP 07-29-2007 10:24 AM

Most consecutive games scoring (NFL) - Morten Anderson 332

Next closest is Jason Elam at 204.

Most seasons leading the league in rushing - Jim Brown (8)

Longest run from scrimmage - Tony Dorsett (99 yds :D)

Red Dawg 07-29-2007 10:29 AM

Averaging a triple double for an entire NBA season. Oscar Robinson will keep that one forever. That means he had over 42 in one season. He damn near did it twice.

Braincase 07-29-2007 10:36 AM

Combo Career Hitting and Pitching

Noone in MLB will ever have over 714 home runs combined with 94 wins, 148 saves, and a lifetime 2.28 ERA.

NEVER!

There wasn't nearly the competition there is today. Tiger is the best I have ever seen.

That would be tough to do, most likey a safe one, but IMHO it is possible.

Wilts 100 point game. Cy Young record, and the all time Doubles and triples records in MLB are pretty safe.

Direckshun 07-29-2007 10:58 AM

Wilt Chamberlain averaged over 50 points for an entire season.

I'm willing to bet Wilt's record can be beaten.

Kobe was only 16 points away.

Number of beers drank on a Chiefs gameday

KCfan - 32

Buck 07-29-2007 11:44 AM

A couple that MIGHT never be broken...

18 straight games with a TD

Lenny Moore 1963-1965
LaDainian Tomlinson 2004-2005

This record couldn't even be broken by Tomlinson, who is a record breaker. I would say that its definitely possible, but usually everyone has one bad game within an 18 week span.

And although this record has been broken 3 times in the last 4 years....

LaDainian Tomlinson 31 TDs in a season.

Do you ever see anyone averaging 2 TDs a game for an entire season?

Most consecutive Multi-TD games

LaDainian Tomlinson, 8

That stat is just ridiculous, however it may be broken

16 TDs in a 5 Game Span

LT...

2 Straight Weeks w/ 4 TDs

Marshall Faulk, LT

4 200 Yard Games in one season

Eric Dickerson 1980

14 consecutive 100 yard games

Barry Sanders 1997

The story was that Georgia Tech had a contract to play Cumberland a year before, but the Cumberland dropped their football program.

GT was embarrassed by Cumberland that year in baseball, something like 22-0. GT wanted to embarrass them in football, but Cumberland had dropped the program, but the contract remained. So, they could either play the game, or pay GT $3,000 (alot in those days, early 1900's). So, Cumberland rounded up volunteers and they played the game.

cdcox 07-29-2007 12:13 PM

I'll throw up several football records that I think will be the most difficult to top:

Most seasons as a player: George Blanda 26

Most seasons as a coach: George Halas 40

Career Receiving, Average Gain: Ken Kavanaugh 22.37

Career Receiving TDs: Jerry Rice 198

Career Kickoff Return Average: Gayle Sayers 30.56

Season Passing Average Gain: Frank Filchock 12.29

Season Recieving Average Gain: Don Currivan 32.58

Season Kickoff Return Average: Travis Williams 41.06

Season Punt Return Average: Herb Rich 23.00

Season Punt Average: Sammy Baugh 51.40

Season Interceptions: Dick Night Train Lane 14

Fishpicker 07-29-2007 12:16 PM

Chris Horodecki's record of 10-0 in MMA. those were his first 10 fights. he can still extend the streak. And he started fighting professionally at age 18.

For reference, the highest active OBP is Barry Bonds' .444, which is #6 all-time.

Joe Demaggio's hitting streak
Orel Hersheisers scoreless inning pitching streak.

I can not believe this has not been said yet but I'm going with DT's seven sacks in one game no way in hell any one gets eight sacks in one game I don't care if they are on the juice or not still won't happen.

pr_capone 07-29-2007 05:49 PM

Most wins by a pitcher in a single season:
Old Hoss Radbourn with 59 in 1884

Most wins by a rookie pitcher in a single season:
Al Spalding with 47 in 1876

jAZ 07-29-2007 06:03 PM

Any statistic that involves doing something in back-to-back games in the same day (ie, hitting a grand slam home run in two games on the same day). Because I doubt anyone will ever play a triple header.

Yea, if it couldn't be done against the Texans the last few years it's unlikely it'll ever be done.
