Gretz: An Ugly Evening

GRETZ: An Ugly Evening Aug 24, 2007, 8:19:28 AM by Bob Gretz - FAQ Mark down the date and time. It was August 23rd. The time was 8:46 p.m Central Daylight Time. That’s when Brodie Croyle had his welcome to the NFL moment. Croyle’s pass intended for Eddie Kennison was picked off by New Orleans cornerback Jason David, ending yet another fruitless Chiefs offensive possession. And the Arrowhead faithful, at least those that bothered to show up for pre-season game No. 3 let him have it. A full shower of boos followed Croyle off the field. No NFL quarterback has ever worked his way into a starting job without hearing from unhappy hometown fans. The problem for Croyle is that the booing was deserved. It was also more than likely directed at the entire Chiefs offense, which was simply awful against the Saints. Thus, New Orleans walked away with a 30-7 victory that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Croyle was awful; hitting just five of 17 passes. Plus, he threw another interception, his third in three games. But he also had no help. Right now, the Chiefs offense is in a shambles and it starts along the offensive line. The front wall is not getting the job done, whether in the running game or the passing game. Saints DE Will Smith destroyed left tackle Will Svitek, blowing past him and through him all evening. This is no way to evaluate a quarterback. Coming into the game it seemed pretty obvious that Croyle was going to be Herm Edwards starting quarterback in Houston. All he had to do was go out against the Saints and not spit the bit, as the horse folks would say. Well, Croyle spit the bit and now you have to wonder if the head coach might be re-thinking his position. He and the coaching staff certainly have to be rethinking what they are doing on offense, because nothing is getting done. The Chiefs have scored just two offensive TDs in three games, are averaging 212.7 yards per game and have turned the ball over six times. Dustin Colquitt is going to need a vacation after this pre-season; he’s already punted 20 times in three weeks. Some holes got punched in the Chiefs defense as well, although it’s hard to get riled up at this unit that’s gotten no support from its offense. The Saints ripped off 74 plays against the Chiefs and held the ball for more than 37 minutes. Still, they had just one touchdown in their first eight possessions. It’s the pre-season. These games are just snapshots of a team. But put up the three offensive snapshots side-by-side and there’s something to worry about. The Chiefs offensive line is not getting the job done. Maybe it’s what they are being asked to do, and more specifically, maybe they are being asked to do things they cannot do. Edwards hinted at that on Thursday evening. Whatever is going on with that unit, it’s not going to matter who the starting quarterback for this team is if the offensive line doesn’t get it’s stuff together and become a more cohesive and productive unit. Without that, Brodie Croyle and the rest of the Chiefs are going to hear many more catcalls from the stands in Arrowhead. |
who wrote that...not Gretz

The offensive line is indeed being asked to do something they can't do: block.
|
Maybe Brodie's wife hit him.....

Dammit DownField Big Game, Get the sand out of your vagina and come save this city...
Huard you are our only hope, without you we are like a ship without sails, canoe without a paddle, dog without a bone, you are the water in our ice tray, fish without water, Hootie without your Fathead.... We need you Huard, you are the way, the truth the life, no one can play behind this line but you.... |
what a pointless article

Damn, I didn't know that game was in KC. I'd be pissed if I paid money to see that.

1) The website needs an editor. Grammar is just brutal.
2) I'm surprised they'd post such a negative, albeit truthful, article. |
I can't believe the offensive line was not addressed more in the off season.
Basically just got Mcintosh and lost Black. I hope our QB's don't injured this year because of this stupidity. |

Printers has looked like our best option. The guy can run!

and fumble. He is not the answer. |
Typical of Gretz to bash the fans.
|
Classless and deranged. One would think a Chiefs staffer would have a little more patience with the QBOTF than just 5 preseason quarters.

Printers has looked pretty good though ( as compared to the others). I think he is more capable of being coached up and has a better chance at being starting qb in a year or so ( maybe, im dreaming). Start Huard this year. Croyle IMO will never be better than a backup. Im sorry. I followed him at BAMA he wasnt great there, he was average and wont be in the NFL.

If Printers could solve his fumbling problem in practice, I am sure the staff would give him more of a chance. We haven't seen enough of him to really know if he can handle himself. |
Problem with Printers is the hammy he strained or pulled. I can't believe the coaches didn't pull him when he came up lame.

Surely something can be done if fumbles are the sole problem? I donno just seems kinda rookieish when he has played CFL ball that long.
|
His improvement in the pocket from last year is nothing short of remarkable. When the pocket breaks down this year, he's really the only option we have that can still make a play with his feet.

Printers will never step out onto the field in a regular seaosn game. Edit:Except, of course, when the swinging doors on the edges get both Croyle and Huard killed. |
I'd like to see Printers with the starters. He does have a fumbling problem... but Croyle has an interception problem.. at least your team has a chance to recover a fumble! Huard will be a very conservative QB with no hopes of scampering outside for a first down, and I can guarantee when Huard gets blindsided... he's going to fumble it anyway.
|
I'd love to see Printers with the starters.
That way it would finally be proven that he's not a real QB and people could finally shut up about it. |
i second brodies wife in a bikini under center
|
I thought this thread was going to be about RINGLEADER's lay.
