Heh...I think this is gonna be one of Herm's "You play to win the game" moments here in KC...this quote is classic Herm! I love it.

Why couldnt of we hired a "real" football coach....

The Bad Guy 09-04-2007 04:44 PM

Real football teams have balance.

For a HC to come out and say scoring 30 points a game isn't real football is sickening. I would love to see a stat of teams that have scored 30 points over the years and what their winning % was.

Scoring 21 points a game is making zero margin for error with a defense. You have to play defense, but having a great scoring offense never hurt either.

MGRS13 09-04-2007 04:45 PM

I'm not even sure Herm has ever understood that if you score MORE points then the other team you win the game.

Hmmm. Brain hurting.

If the defense is playing well, the offense has the ball more often and in better field position. If the offense has the ball more often and in better field position, the likelihood of scoring points increases, does it not?

Yeah, genious, that's exactly what he's saying.

Defense wins championships. If you have a good defense, you don't NEED to score 30ppg.

The last 10 Super Bowl Champs allowed 15.1 points per game.

Which means they would have only need to score 16 a game to win.

Hell, we averaged a shade over 20 last year.

Would 30 points per game be nice?

Sure. Will we NEED 30 ppg?

Nope. Unless DV's been named coach and I've missed it......

Perhaps it is stupid. Why wouldn't a coach welcome 30+ points of offensive output AND a stingy defense? It almost seems like Edwards doesn't want the offense to produce.

Well, if you look at the actual stats from last year Herm may be on to something. We scored and average of 20.7 points per game while giving up an average of 19.7 points per game. So, I think what he's trying to say is 21 pnts per game basically equals a perfect season. On average that is. So, we've got...uh...er... what I'm trying to say.....I mean what Herm's trying to say is 21 pnts a game = CHAMPIONSHIP.

It's all in the math people.

Let's go from Super Bowl XXIII-XLI

Teams with better O's than D's
San Fran X 3--Great offenses, solid D's
Dallas X3--Great Offenses, really good D's
Denver X2--Great Offenses, a workmanlike D
New England X2--and two really good offenses
Green Bay--Great offense, good defense
St. Louis--One of the best offenses in NFL history, opportunistic D
Indy--All time great O, poor defense
Washington--A great offense and a pretty damned good d

Teams with better D's than O's

New England, SB XXXVI
Baltimore, SB XXXV
Pittsburgh, SB XL
Giants, SB XXV

I'm not saying you don't need a good d to help you win, but people who think that defense wins championships are just clueless to the reality of the NFL.

Your best shot of winning is with a top 8 O and a top 15 D.

That transcript isn't complete.

"That's when you score every time you get the football, you score. We're talking about real football. 21 points is a lot of points."

Bearcat 09-04-2007 05:30 PM

I'm all for "defense wins championships", but like someone said, not scoring "a lot" of points per game gives the defense little room for error.

Besides scoring these insane amount of points, these teams also average a touchdown more than their opponents per game... and if you take Atlanta out, it's 8.5. You don't win championships by beating your opponents by a point a game; aka "playing not to lose".

2006
Indianapolis 26.7 offense PPG / 22.6 defense PPG
Chicago 26.7 (23.2 without defense/special teams) / 15.9
New Orleans 25.8 / 20.1
New England 24.1 / 14.8

2005
Seattle 28.3 / 16.9
Denver 24.7 / 16.1
Carolina 24.4 / 16.2
Pittsburgh 24.3 / 16.1

2004
New England 27.3 / 16.3
Pittsburgh 23.3 / 15.7
Philadelphia 24.1 / 16.3
Atlanta 21.3 / 21.1

Averages
Offense - 25 PPG
Defense - 17 PPG

It's a competition. You score as many points as you can muster. If you believe that it's better to score points and control the clock by running instead of passing, that's fine. If you think that scoring a TD on at least every third posession (or once a quarter) is excessive, you're a douche.

To win a football game you need to look at the averages. You should AVERAGE more than 20 points per game, and hold opponents under 20 points per game.

When you score 20 or more, you should win unless your defense sucks.

Your GOAL should be to score at LEAST 21 points per game. At LEAST.

Even with a good defense, saying '21 is a lot of points' is why Herm will never coach a dominant team. Ever.

I think those stats make it perfectly clear that defense DOES win championships.

Not one of those teams NEEDED a Top 8 offense. Hell, they didn't need a Top 15 offense.

They needed to score 16 points per game.

16 points. That's it.

Just because some of those teams had circus offenses, doesn't mean they needed the output. Sure, it was fun to watch, but in the end, they could have won with a average offense.

Almost to a team, defense wins Championships.

In the history of the Super Bowl, only TWO teams have ever made the game (not WON the game, just MADE the game) by allowing over 20 ppg.

The 1983 Oakland Raiders
The 2006 Indianapolis Colts.

11 of the last 18 teams to win a Super Bowl had an offense that ranked 3rd or higher in points.

6 of the last 18 teams to lead the NFL in points won the Bowl.

I'd like to know how many of those teams made it to the Super Bowl by averaging less than the league average for PPG....

Anyone, anyone....Buehler???

If your 16ppg thesis is correct, then why did every team who won...save 1 average well over 20, with a low of just less than 19 (The Bucs).
