Fargo
I was looking at IMDB the other day for movies to rent and see (by rent, I mean download) and noticed Fargo had a great rating and I had never seen it...so I decided to check it out.
The plot kept building and building and building and nothing really ever...happened. It was super dull, I can't believe it has such a good rating...I'd have to consider this one of the most overrated movies I have ever seen... Maybe I should re-watch it? I don't know, I don't think I could sit through that shit again. Perhaps someone could fill me in, I need a little outsider perspective because I'm truly dumbfounded by the high rating this movie has... |
It's the Coen Bros. One thing I've learned about the Coen Bros.: you either LOVE them, or HATE them. You think their stuff is some of the best cinema to come out in the past 20 years, or you think it's garbage.
Count me in the group on the bandwagon. I've been following them since Blood Simple and think 90 percent of their films are borderline genius. |
I liked it. It was funny how they all talked.
|
That's what I was thinking...
Usually, I have pretty decent taste when it comes to movies, so I was thinking that maybe I just missed the genius behind the film... I was just baffled because the plot was building, and building, and building and I figured something HUGE was going to happen, and it didn't, and I was like...wtf?! |

That was funny...but if that's the reason everyone liked the movie (and I've spent a good hour reading the IMDB board for Fargo and everyone seems to reference the accents) then I'm truly pissed off that I wasted my time. |
and as for the Coen brothers, I really liked The Big Lebowski...so I don't know...
|
I like almost all the Coen movies. The only question is how much I like each one.
I'm in the very small minority who actually thinks Fargo is overrated. It's good, for sure. I like it. But I think a lot of the praise is over the top. There are Coen films I like better (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Big Lebowski). |
Not a Coen fan. But Fargo was my style somewhat.

With my personal favs being Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy and O Brother Where Art Thou? But after perusing their filmography, there's not a single film they've done that I thought wasn't at least good or better than average. |
I thought it was a good movie because it is a true story, except for they changed a few things but from what everyone was saying up North, it was well done and pretty accurate.
They say that guy is still in jail and doesn't talk to anyone. |
I'm not sure how you can conclude that it didnt build to anything, the wife dies, her dad dies, Buscemi dies in glorious fashion, (nordern voice) Mr. Lundegaard is plunged into his own hell when he's caught and the pregnant cop gets the killer.
That movie deserves its high rating. |
I used to think I liked Fargo but after reading this thread maybe I shouldn't.
I'm so confused. |
Whats not to like???
A comedy & tragedy all rolled into one, with a stellar cast. |

Although not a Coen Bros movie, another movie that might interest some people is A Simple Plan . I always enjoyed that movie. I don't know what it has to do with Fargo except that they both have a lot of snow, but for whatever reason, it popped into my mind when I saw this thread.
*note to self---try to buy a train of thought today.... |

Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski are incredible movies. All of their others are shit. That includes Fargo.
|
Fargo was NOT based on a true story. They just did that so they could get away with more gruesome scenes.

But its also only your opinion, most Americans & film critics alike heap praise on O' Brother Where Art Thou & Millers Crossing in particular. |

I'm intrigued by the Coen bros. Their movies are very visually appealing and since I liked Raising Arizona and Lebowski so much, I'll see whatever they put out in the hopes that it's comparable. I'll check out Miller's Crossing for sure. |
I think remakes are more your style.
|
William H Macys performance in that flick is brilliant. I remember the first time i watched Fargo like 10 years ago, and i had the same reaction: "Huh?"
Ive watched it many times since and it seems like it gets better every time. Great flick. |

Still, I like the movie. |

Luckily the first Coen Bros movie I saw was Raising Arizona, so I enjoyed it from the get go. But, and there a sense of shame when I say this, I was quite disappointed the first time I watch The Big Lebowski. But a few months later I gave it a second chance, and now it's one of my all time favorites. There's something about how they create an off-kilter world, and the first time you watch, it's all you can do to follow the plot. But as you become more familiar, the small 'beats' and touches come through and the experience becomes more and more enjoyable. |

The whole asian-guy-with-the-crush-on-the-sheriff thing kind of ruined the movie for me. Seriously, what was the point of THAT? :spock:
I generally like their movies, though. Miller's Crossing in particular is magnificent. Big fan of O Brother Where Art Thou as well. |

HA, if you think Fargo is a trip, try Barton Fink. There's a MILLION different theories about that one.
BTW, I'm a huge Coen fan until recently with Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty. I pretend those never happened. |

Give me film noir and excellent scripts over cheesy George Cloony and Marlon Wayans anyday. |
The Jacket was a trip.
