Darrell Russell suspended...

Looks like Rison rubbed off on him, eh?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/news/2001/0807/1236327.html

NAPA, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders defensive lineman Darrell Russell has been suspended for the NFL's first four regular-season games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Russell can be reinstated on Oct. 1 following the Raiders' Sept. 30 game against Seattle.

Russell was one of the league's top draft choices out of University of Southern California. He has played for the Raiders since 1997 and had three sacks last year.

htismaqe 08-07-2001 12:06 PM

hehe...

We'll get to see plenty of Holmes and TRich opening day, I'll bet...

htismaqe 08-07-2001 12:10 PM

That hurts...

They play us, Miami, the Jets, and Seattle the first 4 weeks...especially with the Jets and Dolphins' running games, they're gonna miss him...

Iowanian 08-07-2001 12:13 PM

At least now FaiduhCorporate and the other hoo-hahs will have an excuse after the Chiefs Victory on opening day.

I can see it coming from a mile away.

Russell is just another punk. I'm glad it is the profile of Choice for Big al and the faiduhs. At least pRison will have a cell mate.

morphius 08-07-2001 12:16 PM

It is just to bad they hadn't resigned Rison before the suspension, it would have made me way to happy to see 2 of their players out due to being stupid heads.

DaWolf 08-07-2001 12:18 PM

And apparently they're preparing to sign another offender who is just getting off of his suspension (Dale).

What happened? I thought St. Gannon was supposed to be cleaning this team up? He suggests that the Raiders sign Rison and now they've got substance abuse offenders left and right. I guess that's what happens when you have a drunk driver as your head coach...

:D

Probably wrote a bad check to his dealer...:)

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 12:23 PM

Just when everyone thought Area96 had matured... Does not surprise me in the least.... This is definately his last year in Oakland.... Maybe we should have traded him for Kevin Carter when it was rumored.... I am personally done defending him to the anti Druss Raider contingent....

Not as doom and gloomy as you hope though.... Jr Ioane has looked like the guy everyone thought he was before he got hurt... he has outplayed the other DT's in camp.... There was alot of hope among fans that Jr would beat DRuss outright for the starting gig...

I'm more worried about Grady Jackson coming back from shoulder surgery than I am about Jr taking Druss's place.... If Grady is not ready, then we're in trouble..

morphius 08-07-2001 12:31 PM

JQ - We can't help that we like to see Raider players fall on their butts, they are rivals after all...

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 12:38 PM

WTF? ...According to AP, he missed a scheduled test and is appealing it.... Even if he didn't piss dirty, he should be suspended for being a irresponsible moron... What a dumbass.....How hard can the concept be of either 1) showing up for 5 mnutes to piss in a cup or 2) knowing by now you can't beat the test.....

If the Rams hadn't screwd us by one upping us on draft day... we would have had the player we really traded up to get-- Orlando Pace....

I really thought we were going to go one offseason with nobody brain farting... This really ruins my day...I'm going to go beat up my mailman or something...

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 12:40 PM

hehe morph... you know I'd be rubbng it in if the situation was reversed... so have your fun.....

punk!

Hawiain- is it true that most Raide rFans think of Russell as cancer like Chester Mcglockton was?

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 12:55 PM

Priority....

Not a cancer in the locker room/team killing sense... he's very personable and well liked... but in the underachiever, wasted talent sense.... He doesn't make enough plays to justify being a second overall pick in the draft that we traded up for... plus he never works out....

Many hold the fact that we cut Laroi Glover (since we had McFatty, had just drafted Druss to go along with Russ Maryland) against Druss since Glover exploded after a few years with the Saints....

BIG_DADDY 08-07-2001 12:57 PM

DRs a dumbass. He is getting what he deserves. If there ever was a team that could rot from the inside this is it.

BIG DADDY

Must be following their leader Mr. Al Rotten himself.

NaptownChief 08-07-2001 02:58 PM

I'm sure after our DT's get blown out of the water this year and Downing turns out to be one of the biggest draft day blunders in recent memory we will desperately mosey over to the AFC West castoff trough again and grossly over pay for this bum...

Herzig 08-07-2001 04:36 PM

Raider's Darrell Russell suspended for 1st four games of the 2001 season...

For substance abuse...

Darn...and we play the traitors the 1st game of the season too....

I can hear their excuses already...

tommykat 08-07-2001 04:42 PM

Of all the luck....:) :D ;) :p

Phobia 08-07-2001 04:57 PM

In case anyone is confused, I merged 2 threads about this topic.

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 05:21 PM

This is bizarre...

According to an interview with our GM, they randomly tested the guy 150 times over the past year.... the drug nazi's showed up at his door to give him a random test and he wasn't home (he was in San Diego)...which apparently gives him X amount of time to phone the league office to explain why and reschedule... He failed to do so and thus was suspended... His agent is claiming miscommunication... We'll see..

The fact that he was suspended means he has tested dirty once before (probably last offseason) and he is a tard for not following the correct procedures... but jeez, 150 times is a bit extreme if you ask me.... Who do they think he is? Robert Downey Jr?

The sad thing is alot of Raider fans are atually happy about this... to me thats more pathetic than what DRuss did.... A sad day in Raiderland...

NaptownChief 08-07-2001 05:24 PM

Flyin',

Bangers will turn on their own in a heartbeat so I am not too surprised that most of the faithful are ready to cut his throat...

DaWolf 08-07-2001 05:29 PM

I read on Otto's site that there is specualtion that this is part of a "payback" by the league RE the Raiders lawsuit. I wouldn't put anything past Tags.

But DRuss is a wuss nevertheless. That's what he gets for ripping KC and Arrowhead...

hawaiianboy 08-07-2001 05:40 PM

wolf....

I wouldn't put it past Tags but the burden was on #96.... he knew he had to cross every T and dot every I as Tony Soprano, er... Tags would have his claws out.... Noone to blame but himself...

If personal agendas or politics was involved.... it is sad...

everyone's mom 08-07-2001 05:41 PM

Whats the url for the raider board, I'm curious about what's being said

How did this happen with Gamnon around? I thought he healed the sick with sweat from his jock strap

It's probable that the league knows things about Russell that "otto" does not.
