If he has a breakout year then he'll get paid next off season, much more than he'd get for a longer deal now.

Me too. Barring injury I'll bet he tears it up this year and cashes major bank next year.

Can we afford 6 more years of Vailpass? Vailpass, wrong on football, wrong on politics.

Sure-Oz 03-14-2008 11:00 AM

yeah he probably will have a career year and get paid

Bill Lundberg 03-14-2008 11:02 AM

He has to beat out Darrel Jackson and Isaac Bruce to even become a starter.

StcChief 03-14-2008 11:03 AM

in the NFCW now that he's out behind Fitzgerald /Bouldin on dept chart....
should have a good year

That shouldn't be too difficult. Plus, do you honestly believe both Darrell Jackson and Isaac Bruce will play 16 games each this season?

Bruce is 35 years old and Jackson finally played in 15 games last year and couldn't top 500yds receiving.

Sure-Oz 03-14-2008 11:09 AM

Jackson and Johnson probably would start and bruce a #3

Playing in Martz's pass happy system won't hurt, provided Alex Smith can become a 4,000 yard passer.

Monty 03-14-2008 11:14 AM

Glad he didn't sign with KC.......next.

Skyy God 03-14-2008 11:24 AM

On second thought, if Martz can turn Shaun McDonald and Mike Furrey from zeros into heros, he can do the same with Johnson.

Johnson a zero? Do you even know who Bryant Johnson is?

A lot of guys here think anyone that gets waived or retires could be a chief

Bruce is a Martz guy and Jackson didn't exactly have any support at the QB position last year.

Sure-Oz 03-14-2008 11:54 AM

They can't even get the ball to Vernon Davis

Yep, and he is definetely the best threat on that team catching the ball, when he is healthy. IMO

I know, it's kind of sad to see so much talent completely wasted.

Brock 03-14-2008 11:58 AM

Looks like the guy got very little interest.

Yeah, he's the guy who everyone expects to produce when Fitz or Boldin go down, only to disappoint. He got outplayed by Jerheme Urban last year.

.....which suprised me. I guess I was wrong in that I thought teams would be fighting to pay for him. Maybe he really does suck?

I figured he would at least get better than a 1 yr. deal.

A Marc Boerigter wannabe (aka Urban) had a better game last year than Bry Johnson's had his entire career. And he's inconsistant.

Yep. Like Jake Scott, it's VERY clear to me what NFL GMs think of this first-round bust. Everywhere he went he was shunned away.

Yep, it is an annual tradition, the Chiefs blow it by not signing these obvious super stars that would get the team over the hump. Or, since Herm has been manager, mountain.

Dammit Carl! :cuss:

Wow you're down on the guy. I'd like to have him, think he could be a solid WR with the right system. He is definetely not the strong stud that Fitz and Quan are but I love his wheels and his hands are solid.

Mecca 03-14-2008 01:28 PM

He wanted more money than Buffalo was willing to pay him so he ends up in SF....

Also Johnson caught 46 balls and Urban caught 22 balls so um come again on how he was outplayed?

People watch a game for 10 minutes of teams they never watch and immediately assume reeruned things.

FloridaMan88 03-14-2008 01:43 PM

The Chiefs are relying on a WR that couldn't even break into the starting line-up of Baltimore's miserable offense.

But considering the Chiefs will probably pass the ball 5 times TOTAL next season under Herm's "new" offense it really won't matter.

I don't think they'll rely on him.
I think they draft a WR in April as well.

And to Darling's credit he did have two fairly talented guys ahead of him.
And a passing game that left a lot to be desired.

Darling wouldn't have been my first choice, but there's not a lot of risk involved in that signing.

Mecca 03-14-2008 01:46 PM

This is one I will question the Chiefs on, Johnson is big, fast and still has upside to the level of player he is. He didn't get paid that much money....

Your wrong. They may not draft one high, but they will draft one somewhere.

Probably a return guy.

Ive maintained a breakdown like this for awhile now:

10 picks

4 O-linemen

2 defensive linemen/ or one defensive lineman and 1 linebacker

2 defensive backs

2 WR's/ or 1 wr and 1 rb

Three, in fact. Derrick Mason, a first-rounder and a real talented kid in Demetrius Williams.

No shame in being a backup in that situation.

Hoover 03-14-2008 02:06 PM

I think he must have some sort of injury. The bills brought him in early hand had him take a physical which leads me to think he must have some baggage.

I think we're in agreement then?

We both think they'll draft a WR in April...

Sounds to me like he picked up Johnson in a fantasy league the week that Urban blew up and he can't forget about it.

No, I'd been burned enough by him over the course of 3 seasons to care by then.

As to Mecca's "point", he did have more catches than Urban last year, sure. But he started 7 games to Urban's 2. He's started 19 games in his career and only averages 46 yds/game. Bry Johnson plays like Jane when he gets a starting opportunity. Not that I'm saying Urban is the 2nd coming of Ed McCafferty, but he's had 4 starts for AZ and averages 65 yds/game. He's had ample opportunity to show whether he's a #2 receiver in pass-friendly offenses and failed miserably.

Why didn't he sign in KC, other than the fact he's mediocre at best and we weren't interested? Which situation is he more likely to chose: KC , where he'd be the 3rd option (at best) in a terrible passing offense with an unsettled QB situation, or SF, with a Martz-led O, a highly drafted QB, and no slam dunk options ahead of him?

Mecca 03-14-2008 02:41 PM

Something tells me you've seen Bryant Johnson play for a grand total of 15 minutes.

doomy3 03-14-2008 05:58 PM

Was there anyone rumored to be interested in Johnson that wasn't a West Coast offense? Everything I saw on Johnson had him tied to a West Coast Offense because of his size. Same with Hackett. Maybe that's why the Chiefs weren't interested? Or maybe it's just because he isn't that good?

Somewhere around 30 NFL teams didn't give a shit. That should pretty much tell you everything you need to know.

blueballs 03-15-2008 09:13 AM

The Atlanta Falcons have a visit scheduled with Broncos kicker Jason Elam...the San Francisco 49'ers are reportedly ready to part ways with WR Darrell Jackson...the New York Giants have re-signed HB Derrick Ward.
