Bill Self Press Conference 4:30pm in Lawrence

It may or may not be televised on Metro Sports... but that is all I know.

It will be on 610 and 810 though, I imagine.

Those should have been King Carl's words.
Don't think it's what we'll hear from Self though.

Sure-Oz 04-10-2008 02:44 PM

He's retiring

Bearcat 04-10-2008 02:46 PM

Great.. no need to drag this thing out.

My first reaction is that since it's only 4 hours after the meeting with Perkins, it means he signed with Kansas... I wouldn't think he'd be ready to bolt so soon if there wasn't an agreement, but what do I know, maybe he's already said yes to OSU.

Stewie 04-10-2008 02:46 PM

It's actually at 4:30.

He wouldn't hold a press conference in Lawrence to say he's leaving for OSU.

KU offers Self new contract
Jack Harry, NBCActionNews.com

LAWRENCE, Kan. – An offer is on the table for Kansas coach Bill Self, but it is going to take more than just cash to keep Bill Self at KU.

NBC Action Sports has learned the University of Kansas has offered Self an eight-to-10 year contract worth between $25 and $30 million with incentives.

The 45-year-old coach met with Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins Wednesday.

The only hang up is that Self is negotiating for an upgrade in facilities for his players. He wants to see more money committed to the basketball program, which has been spending a lot of money trying to upgrade the football facilities.

Out of respect for his alma mater, Self said he will visit with Oklahoma State officials, most likely over the phone.

Self reiterated Wednesday that he loves the University of Kansas and both he and his family want to remain in Lawrence.

A new deal may be wrapped up by Thursday.

KU press conference today at 4:30

<hr>KU sets 4:30 p.m. press conference after Self, AD meet about contract

By J. BRADY McCOLLOUGH

Kansas coach Bill Self talked Tuesday morning about winning the national championship.

LAWRENCE | Kansas announced that there will be a 4:30 p.m. press conference today.
Around noon, KU coach Bill Self stepped into KU athletic director Lew Perkins’ office at the Parrott Athletic Center. Self and Perkins met for 15 minutes on Wednesday. They planned to meet again today to have a more detailed discussion about Self’s future at KU.
Self, who currently has three years left on a deal that pays him $1.375 million per year, has been seeking a contract extension that could put an end to the speculation about him returning to Oklahoma State, his alma mater.

Alton deFlat 04-10-2008 02:52 PM

Bill Self is staying in Lawrence.

According to sources close to the situation, the Kansas head coach will sign an extension that will keep him with the Jayhawks.

An official announcement is expected at a news conference at 4:30 p.m. CT. Terms and length of the deal were not immediately known.

Self led Kansas to the national championship on Monday night and was the top target of his alma mater at Oklahoma State.

However, Self met with Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins on Wednesday and again earlier this afternoon. He will put an end to any speculation that will have him leaving Kansas for the huge payday that Oklahoma State billionaire T. Boone Pickens was reportedly offering.

Self previously had three years remaining on a deal that paid him $1.375 million per season.

Self, 45, replaced Roy Williams as Kansas coach in 2003 and did what Williams wasn't able to do in 15 seasons — bring a title to Lawrence. The 2008 championship was the Jayhawks' first since 1988, and it ensured Self a big payday whether he left for Oklahoma State or stayed at Kansas.

sedated 04-10-2008 02:53 PM

There's no way he is leaving.
1. He wouldn't have the presser in Lawrence.
2. He couldn't have a deal done with OKst this quickly, after meeting with the KU AD today.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3340309

Kansas coach Bill Self said Thursday he will stay at Kansas instead of going to his alma mater Oklahoma State.

Self told ESPN.com that he spoke with OSU AD Mike Holder Wednesday night. He said Holder never discussed money but just asked if he wanted to come home.

"I couldn't see leaving this place," Self said of KU after winning the national title Monday in San Antonio. "This is where we want to be."

Self said that Kansas and he would get together soon on his deal but there was no rush.

"I'm still in shock about how we won," Self said of being down nine points to Memphis with 2:12 left. "I'm most proud we made so many plays under pressure."

Self said he didn't want to leave KU like he had left Tulsa and Illinois -- on top without enjoying the fruits of the program's success.

KU called a 5:30 ET news conference to discuss Self's decision.

Senior writer Andy Katz covers men's college basketball for ESPN.com.

Oh, yeah. :doh!: PBJ

Maybe it's like Roy, and the "press conference" is actually a group of reporters in the parking lot following Self, who says "I can't say anything now, but once my plane lands in Stillwater, I plan on clearing everything up". :p

Hell, the Jayhawk Towers were pretty rough when I was at KU 20 years ago. It was better than living in a regular dorm, though.

Bill Self just said in a brief phone conversation with the Journal-World that he is staying at Kansas. Details will be revealed at a 4:30 p.m. press conference.

-----------------------

The Kansas University athletics department just announced that it will hold a 4:30 p.m. press conference regarding its men's basketball program.

The press conference is believed to be addressing the future of coach Bill Self. Three microphones have been set up at the table in the auditorium. The press conference will air live on Sunflower Broadband channel 6.

Self met with athletic director Lew Perkins earlier this afternoon, and is known to still be in the building.

OK so everyone is happy he's staying
2 first round exits
couple more early exits
1 lousy national championship.
How is that a 'good' record
1 for 5 thats crappy even in baseball.
/JK

Maybe he can hire that dag gummed Roy Williams as an assistant.

Way to go Rock Chalk Jayhawk.

No thanks, Roy is 1 for 20, plus you never know if he would be on the bench wearing a MU sticker under his jacket.

I saw his two pregame speeches during the FF, and there was absolutely no stuttering... and I doubt it was any more scripted than something like this. He must think too much when in front of a microphone.

Eh... he's been completely honest throughout, so I believed him when he said he would tell OSU to look elsewhere.

GoHuge 04-10-2008 03:56 PM

You know Lew Perkins really needs to get his damn nose fixed. How he can look in the mirror without saying "WOW!!" is beyond me. I'd have gotten that taken care of at some point :)

You know even as a Wildcat I really love Bill Self. It was nice hearing a college coach say that there is "no way he was leaving after giving the six guys he has coming in his word that he was going to be their coach." Pretty rare in todays age. I just had to deal with our former coach breaking his word to everybody so "he could go home." It's nice to see a guys word mean something even if they have a chance to "go home." I'm so sick of people using that as an excuse to break your word. Congrats to the Hawks for having a stand up guy.

KCFalcon59 04-10-2008 03:56 PM

He averages 28 wins per year, has been here 5 years and went to 3 Elite Eights and has won 1 National Championship. To put that into perspective, MU has been to 4 Elite Eights in their entire history.

I'm not saying he does this, but if he doesn't play team ball, we wouldn't want him. I don't know much about him, but generally guys that are interested in fast-tracking to the NBA don't play much team ball.

First off, I was talking about the media not the people in KC in general about being a bunch of hacks\hicks\whatever.

Second, I will elaborate, our reporters have no stones, none at all. Watch during football season, they will lob softball questions to Herm and Carl, Then take both of them balls deep waiting for answers. None of them will ever ask the tough question.. Maybe big bear Moss, she has more stones than any of the other reporters...

Whitlock? Your kidding right, he is the first guy that everyone on this board jumps on when he says something about these teams that offends us. How many threads has there been on whitlock claiming he is a hack, he sucks, hes racist, he eats to much, he...... You get the point.
He might be national, but still according to many message board posters here and everywhere else, he is a fat buffett eating tard.

The pwnage part of the interview was when Self directed his comments to the media saying, I have been telling you this for sometime now and you guys just refuse to listen... I watched the interview on espn news and it was pretty saracastic in his facial expressions...
