Is Allen worth it?
Jared Allen’s place in NFL (financial) history
April 23rd, 2008 – 7:57 AM by Kevin Seifert Based on some very preliminary research this morning, it appears that new Vikings DE Jared Allen is the NFL’s third-highest paid active player and the fourth-highest in league history. If you use guaranteed money as a benchmark, then there are only two players whose contracts guarantee more than the $31,000,0069 in Allen’s deal. Both of them are quarterbacks: Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, whose recent contract extension guarantees him $36 million, and Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning, who was guaranteed $34.5 million in 2004. The NFL record, we believe, is the $37 million the Atlanta Falcons guaranteed QB Michael Vick in 2005. http://ww3.startribune.com/vikingsblog/ He is now the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, according to them. |
No, he is not worth that IMO.
|
Grats to the Vikes for wasting thier money, imo.
|
There's no way he's worth that amount. He's a great player and I'm sad to see the Chiefs loose him, but I would be pissed if my team paid him that kind of money.
|
The guy had a great year but disappeared in the clutch.
And I've said this before...one knee injury and his effectiveness could be drastically reduced. He's not the most naturally talented guy. Considering the balls-out style of play he brings, and those long legs, it's a possibility. |
more than tom brady!

You should feel good about this trade. There is no way the Chiefs would have paid him that money, nor should they, and he would have eventually walked and we wouldn't have gotten anything for him. We got a first and 2 thirds for a guy who didn't want to be here. Not bad. |
Good for him. I'm glad he's getting that kind of cash from a different team though.
We're not ready to contend yet and he wanted out. That's probably Carl's fault but you can't fix stupid. That being said the Chiefs are taking a completely different tact and I'm more excited about this weekend's draft than I can ever remember. We've never had the opportunity to draft this many kickers in one weekend ever. |
Only if he's the last piece of a SB puzzle, but MInny doesn't even have a QB.
|
when you really think about that contract, you have to admit that we had no business doing that for a team rebuilding from scratch....
that is insane |

I'd love to know their definition of "guarantee", that phrase gets thrown out incorrectly all the time when talking about NFL contracts. Unless they gave him the $31 million up front, there is nothing "guaranteed" about it.
|
Does it really matter if it is 30 million or 25 million?
Over the 5 years it's only a difference of 1 million a year for cap purposes; or about half of Bober's salary last year. As a GM do you lowball a player like Allen, or do you insist you have enough money left over to sign a Chris Bober or Kendrall Bell or Boomer Grigsby? People act like the bonus money will affect them. Ticket prices are going to go up even if KC is 30 mil under the cap or 10 mil under the cap. |
We won't know for a few years. He could get another DUI, he could decide he's got his cash and not play as hard, or he could go on to have a HOF career. He'll have more talent around him now than he's ever had before.

No....
$31,000,069....and was that $69 really necessary???? sheesh.... |
Who the hell is he going to sack now
there are no QBs up there that Ryan Sims couldn't sack |

His bar had better have solid gold barstools....

It's like trading for Champ Bailey
to cover Samie Parker |
Time will tell whether it was worth it for Minnesota. With the defensive line he'll have around him up there, he should be a monster.
From the Chiefs' perspective, I don't think that would have been a good contract at all. If it's Jared and that contract versus the picks, then I think we did the right thing. |

I am happy with the trade, he wanted to go, and we got a great value out of him. I'm not happy he left but we do have a lot of needs elsewhere that we can *attempt* to fill
only bummer is now we have to spend one of those picks on a DE. |
Tony Gonzalez must be kicking his dog this morning.

Well...
This Jared trade for draft picks...will either be the cherry on the top of the legacy of Peterson.... or just another turd stuck in the toilet of damn near 20 years of flushing, without a wipe |

If Gonzo was stupid enough to think he was resigning with a championship contender then I can't feel sorry for him.

no defensive end is worth the contract that they gave jared allen, that is all i know.
|
I wonder how much we can thank the Giants for this deal. The NFL is a copycat league and the Giants just won a Superbowl by loading up on pass rushers. The Vikings are just a quarterback away from being contenders now.
|
I don't know if he's worth it or not, but I know I'd rather be on the Chiefs side of this trade than the Vikings side unless I had a team that I thought was one piece away from the Superbowl and DE was that piece. Surely, with the offense they have in place, the Vikings don't think JA is the last piece to their superbowl puzzle, do they?
|
Clark Hunt must have been involved in the decision to unload Jared, because there's no way Carl would have been smart enough to make the trade. Thank you Minnesota, you've got balls!

Good for him. And good that its to an NFC team, too.

I have to admit it's funny seeing everyone now claiming this was a great trade.
On the day the rumor was announced, there were about 3 of us saying it was a good decision, and the rest of the board was going batshit crazy. |

TG was NFL radio. He said he has to trust the front office but he was talking about only going two more years and he wants to win now. I do think he will look at the end of the season to see where the team stands. In the meantime he is going to shepherd the newcomers and thinks it is the line that needs to be address. He is ok with Ryan being selected, but doesn't think that helps him to win now.

wonder what they'd give us for huard |
I knew the boy deserved to get paid, but QB money? that's bat-shit crazy.

This team isn't a DE away from being a contender. The Chiefs, before this trade, should have been going into this draft with the idea of selecting the BPA with positional value and need as a consideration when choosing between players that they have rated similiarly. That shoudn't change now. |

Jared Allen's six-year contract is worth $73.26 million and includes $38.4 million in the first three years. The originally reported $31 million guaranteed is correct. Allen is a truly dominant player and should be even moreso next to the Williamses in Minnesota, but this is still a massive risk because of his off-field history. The deal will likely only be a success if he stays out of trouble. |
With that kind of money he can install his own tap at his house. That way he can get liquored up and not need to drive home...!

crazy |
He's not worth that paycheck, and not worth what the Chiefs got for him, IMO.
The Chiefs screwed the Vikes. Qualification: Anything or anyone is worth exactly what a buyer is willing to pay, so by that measure alone Mr. Allen is "worth" exactly what was traded and what is paid. |

Jared Allen is due an $8 million roster bonus in 2010 per the six-year, $72.36 million contract he signed with the Vikings. The bonus is guaranteed for injury only. It protects Minnesota in case Allen gets in trouble with the law again. Allen's signing bonus is $15.5 million. His base salaries are: $750,000 (2008), $7.75 million (2009), $6.38 million (2010), $8,979,438 (2011), $11,619,850 (2012), and $14,280,612 (2013). |
guaranteed money WHEN .........
in the first 3 years or over the length of the contract. huge difference |

but when the Chiefs requested the same consideration, he cries like a baby and demands to be traded? awesome...lets all blame Carl! |

i believe 2010 is scheduled to be uncapped right now as well 15 million + 750,000 in yr 1 7.5 million in yr 2 6.38 million + 8 million in yr 3 8 million in yr 4 4yr - 45 million dollar contract yrs 5 and 6 will never happen alot of cash that's for sure |

Allen's agent said the Chiefs never made a serious long term offer. but you keep pounding that drum |
I was against the trade, this chaned my mind. That's WAY too much for anybody who isn't a guaranteed 3 time Defensive POY.

Quote:
oh the humanity....its Carl's fault that Allen got in trouble... and I'm doubly angry that had the audacity to get 3 first day picks for said alcoholic....really....i'm angry... |

some people wanted to keep Allen ... get over yourself. |

well we got picks out of it, i think that it is worth it, money wise and maybe rebuilding wise.

Allen made a fair deal with the team. It just goes to prove what an absolute ****tard Peterson is and how reasonable Allen was. Carl was unable to think of a deal that was fair and protected the team in a worst case scenario. It isn't until 2010 that Allen will go over the 31 million mark. This year it will cost Minnesota 16.25M which is about 5 million less than what KC is going to pay its unproven #5 pick. |
No one is worth that money, but good for him.
