It's a Girl

So as many of you know, the wife and I are expecting our first child.
Last week we had our first ultrasound, and for a while we were trying to decide if we were going to find out the sex of the baby or not. We decided several weeks ago that we were going to have the tech write it down on an envelope, and for Mother's Day, with the whole family around, open it in front of everyone so the whole family could share in the suprise.

We opened it yesterday and found out we will be having a baby girl.

Madison Jane (Maddie)

(James Madison, MIL's middle name)

So we are excited, but still in a little bit of shock. It's one more step toward this whole thing being very real. I was wanting a boy, but obviously am ecstatic either way, and am in love with the idea of having a little girl.

But, also, there are (to me) infinite more fears that go along with having a girl that I will have to work through. It's exciting, though, and I can't wait for the challenge of living up to some of the role models my wife and I have as far as raising children.

congrats and good luck.

Congrats, Sully! Strange time of life right now, isn't it? It's like time is dragging by ever so slowly, then you look up, and it's time for the baby to be here. How is Jilly handling pregnancy?

I'll let you borrow my twelve year old, just so you can get the full view of what's in store for you down the road. :doh!:

kepp 05-12-2008 08:51 AM

Congratulations!

I have two girls and, yes, there are a lot more worries I have with them than I'd have with boys. But I wouldn't have it any other way now. She'll hold a special place in your heart.

Jilly is doing great. After the first trimester was finished, she stopped feeling bad and has been doing a great job growing a person. Time does seem to be dragging so damn slow. I assume that once September rolls around I won't feel the same way, though.

We are just praying that Maddie doesn't have red hair like her mother!!!

Phobia 05-12-2008 08:53 AM

Girls are easier, dude. You'll get through it just fine.

Cool "reveal" idea though.

Extra Point 05-12-2008 08:56 AM

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy, birthing, raising, and footing of the bills, Sully!

It's weird; the time distortion thing keeps rolling. The hours, days, and months feel like forever, then you'll blink, and all of a sudden, you're dropping her off for her first day of kindergarten. Be sure to enjoy every second of it along the way.

StcChief 05-12-2008 08:59 AM

Congrats. Good luck

sedated 05-12-2008 09:03 AM

I wonder why so many people are having girls these days.

I'd say at least 80% of the people I know who have kids have had girls.

Mr. Plow 05-12-2008 09:04 AM

Congrats Sully!!.....and Jilly!!!!

We have 4 children, but our first baby girl just turned 8 months old.

Strangely, she is more relaxed than the boys were, even though I'm sure when she gets older she'll be crazy just like every other woman.

Congrats again!

Are you counting us too? I have 4 of the critters. You might say there's a penis shortage at my house.

Phobia 05-12-2008 09:09 AM

You're welcome to whomever runs with that one.

The Rick 05-12-2008 09:35 AM

Congrats! As others have said, she'll always be special to you.

My 4-year-old daughter is a handful already. Has been since she was born. I'm already worried about what it's going to be like when she's older.

On the other hand, my 3-month-old son is as laid back as can be. As long as he has food and a clean diaper, he's happy. Already sleeps 7-8 hours a night too.

The wife is at her first appointment with the doctor today regarding the next one. At this point, it's nice not caring what the next one will be.

Delano 05-12-2008 09:38 AM

It is good to hear that all is well with mother and child.

Exciting times.

Or maybe just a short penis?

teedubya 05-12-2008 09:55 AM

Sully, and Jilly... congrats!

Nothing is as rewarding and awe-inspiring as first seeing your first kiddo. What joy awaits!

Might I suggest some cool baby gifts?

Good luck to all 3 of you. Girls aren't that scary. Hopefully your wife will be able to help you figure it all out. That's how it's worked for me with my two daughters.

Don't do that to the man, thats not nice at all.

I have to say that the highlight to my day is when I come home and my 2 year old girl drops everything to hunt me down and give me a hug with a huge smile just yelling daddy over and over again.

same for me, except replace "2 year old" with "22 year old", and she's yelling Daddy in a slightly different way.

Mr. Kotter 05-12-2008 11:19 AM

Congrats, Sully.

Fatherhood is awesome, and awe inspiring.... :thumb:

LMAO - Mine just turned 25....

Jilly 05-12-2008 11:55 AM

Thanks everyone and to my awesome husband. I have no doubt that our little girl will have the best daddy in the world and am just ecstatic that so far she is healthy. I can't wait to meet her. You're right, Bowser. It is a weird time warp, luckily, I'm enjoying being pregnant.

alpha_omega 05-12-2008 11:56 AM

Glad to hear it. Remember the old saying - "Having a kid is a hundred times harder than you thought it would be, and a thousand times more rewarding than you ever thought it could be."

And don't forget my offer of borrowing my kid for a preview of what it's like to deal with a pre-teen girl. :)

Heh. Being one and dealing with one are two different deals entirely. I fear for Sully's sanity. And hairline.

BIG_DADDY 05-12-2008 12:10 PM

Congratulations. My kid was the greatest thing to ever happen to me. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

is where i found it from. They have Tigers stuff on ... didn't see a mobile though.

I have always found it a bit difficult to find cool sports things for my kids when they were infants and toddlers. Not a lot of choices. You would think there would be shitloads to choose from as passionate as fans are...

It took 2 years to find a KU bib for my little girl.

Perhaps it has something to do with homogametic sex?

Anyway, congratulations to you both.

EyePod 05-12-2008 06:02 PM

Congrats to you guys. I kinda want a daughter...just so I can be that "crazy" dad. I work with a woman who broke up with a guy, and he wouldn't stop trying to see her. I asked her if she had to get a restraining order, and she said "No. My dad just went out to talk to him, told him that if he ever came back to their house that he would be shot with a 12 gauge, and the I never saw him again." I want to have that kind of overwhelming power over the guys who are dating my daughter. It will be empowering.
