First he drills the pitcher with a line drive to the face, breaking his nose.

Then he comes around to score 2 batters later and snaps the catchers ankle like a twig.

(After the pitcher's beak is broken, FF to around the 2:45 mark to see the catcher get blown up.)

Amnorix 05-22-2008 01:21 PM

Ouch and double ouch. Can't really blame Pujols in either case though. The first was freak bad luck. The second -- the catcher blocked the plate with a foot -- what was he supposed to do really? I guess he could've tried to go around it, but I'm nto thinking too many 3rd/4th batters in MLB would be tap-dancing around the catcher to get to home...

Frazod 05-22-2008 01:22 PM

Seeing this once was enough. The pitcher got jacked up. I'm surprised that shot didn't just kill the guy as hard as it hit him. And then wiping out the catcher on top of it? Jesus. I really felt bad for those guys and the Padres in general; you want to win, but not like that.

It was clear, though, that none of the damage inflicted was intentional. Even the slide was clean. Just a whole bunch of bad luck packed into a few minutes of baseball.

Right. I also feel bad for Pujols. He's gotta feel guilty as hell about it all, even though it's not his fault. But, obviously, I don't feel as bad for him as for those two Padres, or the rest of the Padres team, or their fans. Dayum...

Normally when something like that happens the other player just keeps his distance. Albert actually went up to the guy right after it happened and was obviously upset.

teedubya 05-22-2008 01:26 PM

Man, that dude is a beast. I like Albert Pooholes tho. Wish the damn Royals would have drafted his KC ass.

Yeah, you could see the look on Albert's face after realizing the catcher was hurt - he was still obviously bothered by what happened to Young, then this?

teedubya 05-22-2008 01:31 PM

holy shit... that catcher got owned... so did the pitcher. Pujols taking out the battery, damn.

Sure-Oz 05-22-2008 01:32 PM

Dirty player that p00holes

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 05-22-2008 01:33 PM

foreigners are bad for the game

Direckshun 05-22-2008 01:34 PM

Who slides home with their nails up like that?

That's not a safe play, EVER. You risk an injury like that every time you do it.

Frazod 05-22-2008 01:42 PM

That wasn't a dirty slide. He was going straight for the plate.

They boo'd the hell out of him when he came to the plate the next time. It's too bad too because he is one of the genuinely nice guys in pro baseball.

ChiTown 05-22-2008 03:03 PM

Holy fook. How the **** did that pitcher even stay sober enough to sit up after taking one to the face. That's amazing.

By the way, Albert is a class act for immediately coming over to see how he was doing and even say a prayer.

The only reason Chris Young is even still alive is because that ball was off of the end of Albert's bat - just kinda reached out for it.

Had that ball come off the sweet spot and hit him there...

And to think that the NCAA STILL uses aluminum bats.

My thoughts exactly, I don't think Legion teams should use aluminum bats any more much less NCAA.

Wow. I saw this on ESPN last night, but I didn't see the catcher's ankle twisting like that. Just wow.

I wasn't at the game, and I wouldn't have bood him if I was. Nothing about either of those plays were intentional.

Tough break for you guys. I hope both players make it back soon. The catcher in particular is fortunate (if you can really call it that) that he just suffered a sprain. That replay reminded me of Robin Ventura's horrible ankle injury from years ago.

Eh, I can't blame them for booing. Any time a player gets injured - intentional or not - the natural reaction of the crowd is to be pissed at the player who caused the injury.

Buck 05-23-2008 06:27 PM

Well, our season was over well before that happened.

We could win 15 straight games and still be under .500

BigRedChief 05-23-2008 08:23 PM

Pujols is a bad ass and a class act.

No chit if he would have got all of the ball like say ......he did against Lidge in the playoff game the dude would have been seriously hurt, life threatning hurt.
