Our Democratic National Convention Experiences

This isn't politics, so no need to move it to DC. It's more sociology. I just thought that maybe the Denver residents could discuss stuff we observe as part of the DNC events.

I'll start. It's Sunday night, and I haven't noticed anything.

Others can feel free to add to this thread as the week progresses.

Bugeater 08-24-2008 07:29 PM

I was in Denver a couple years ago, and I didn't notice anything then.

I'm not surprised. My cats appear to be sitting this election out as well.

DaFace 08-24-2008 08:16 PM

The news was 20 minutes of DNC coverage and 10 minutes of everything else tonight. Other than that, I'm 10 miles from downtown, so I haven't noticed anything yet.

Oh, except that every business in downtown suddenly decided to paint last week. There were "wet paint" signs everywhere.

alanm 08-24-2008 09:18 PM

I suggest both you guys leave town while you still can.

Rain Man 08-25-2008 10:23 AM

Convention Day One: Not a lot of impact yet. A few helicopters flying overhead, a lot more policemen and security than normal, and no answer yet about the dead Muslim with the big container of cyanide in the hotel about 15 blocks from my house.

Donger 08-25-2008 10:26 AM

DIA parking is even worse than normal.

That's a great idea! I think I'll go on vacation to New York City starting tomorrow. (Really.)

Rain Man 08-25-2008 10:38 AM

Oh, and apparently Hilary Clinton is staying at a hotel about three blocks from my office. I found out because we saw a big army of orcs and goblins pass through.

Obama is staying down the street, about a dozen blocks from my office.

DaFace 08-25-2008 02:05 PM

I never knew we had so many street performers around here.

Oh, and there's a line of police in full riot gear keeping the "HOMO SEX IS SIN" people in check. I feel like we're in a war zone with tourists.

Ebolapox 08-25-2008 02:13 PM

I wish I could go to the rage against the machine concert they're playing in protest of the DNC (much more likely to see them in Minnesota for the RNC protest)

:(

Is that the Fred Phelps crew? You can tell it's them by their "Deliverance banjo player" look.

Did Hillary fly in on her broom?

Hmm...I didn't get a good look at them. I did see some guy getting arrested who looked like he hadn't bathed in a few months.

007 08-25-2008 04:24 PM

Let it BURN!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHHA

smittysbar 08-25-2008 04:25 PM

For what it's worth, it was indeed the Phelps clan. I found the protest listed on their web site. No wonder they were drawing so much attention.

When Ted Kennedy came on, my cats all broke into the liquor cabinet and drove my car off a bridge. Weird....

Did they pick up any cute kittens on the way?

Priceless!!

I caught that douche bag Ward Churchill on the tube....Man, I'd love to deck that fake indian!!

007 08-25-2008 08:43 PM

These conventions crack me up. They are still the "presumptive nominee" technically. I don't think anyone related to the nominee should be speaking until AFTER they have been officially nominated.

Swazey 08-25-2008 09:09 PM

Barack was on via satellite tonight... under his name was "live in Kansas City, MO"... and he has to say.... "I'm in St. Louis".

We get no respect, I tell ya, no respect. :(

Since Hillary Clinton will be in town, Denver brought in a lot of guards to help protect the local residents. This is a street on my way home where some sort of protest was getting underway.

Check out the dude in the center left. He was all excitable, swinging his tear gas gun around and stuff. I predict that he's going to gas someone before the week is out.

In an effort to be friendly, the police are offering free pony rides.

There was some muslim singing going on, so I took a little detour to find it. It turns out that there's a really big temporary mosque set up across from the state Capitol. I suspect that the Republicans sponsored it to help build that Obama-Muslim link.

The Host Committee is very welcoming, and has these buses ready to help take protestors to free lodging.

He said Kansas City twice and St. Louis once. He got saved by Sasha asking him where he was.

The buses are probably making corrupt politicians in the Capitol very nervous.

I'm in Manhattan (NYC) now, and this has nothing to do with Denver, but I don't feel like starting a new thread for my vacation experiences.

Let me just say that, when you're on the observation deck of the Empire State Building, it's not a good feeling to hear a low rumble, followed 5 minutes later by a rush of security guards talking about feeling an explosion in the building. I'm guessing it was nothing, given that I'm still alive, but still odd. On the other hand, the view was great!

This is why I hate cats.

They just lay around all day until their estrogen shoots up and they take off running for not reason and attacking $#it at random.

They don't pay rent, they don't buy their own $#it, they don't even feed themselves. The least they could do is get up once every 4 years and vote...:shake:

Don't die. I need you on projects.

Rain Man 08-27-2008 09:50 AM

On the DNC front, we had some people on our street corner picketing to ban bird watching because it's like bird pornography. We think they were just joking, but they had flyers and stuff.

I also got to see a traffic jam that was all police cars. Three lanes on one street, and it was backed up, and every car was a police car.

Don't sweat it.

Just feed another guy a high fiber diet and some mescaline...

Frazod 08-27-2008 10:59 AM

I hope to God Chicago doesn't get the 2016 Olympics. It would be like all this convention bullshit X 1000.

Rain Man 08-27-2008 01:07 PM

Going to lunch today, I passed:

1. One guy holding a "Jesus Saves" sign, but he shows up once a week anyway.

2. A rastafarian guy begging for money who said, "I'm going to rub your head for luck" and then physically put his hands on my head when I walked by.

3. A not-unattractive woman holding up a "Free Hugs" sign, which I thought may have been a sign to free some criminal named James Hugs, but then some other woman came up and the first woman hugged her.

4. Some semi-large protest march, but they didn't have signs and I couldn't figure out what they were chanting. It might've been "Stop Warming", but then again it could've been "Stop Mornings".

5. About 50 policemen.

6. At least two street musicians/bands.

The shoe shine guy on the corner actually brought in a new chair and a shoeshine girl as an employee.

Rain Man 08-27-2008 01:08 PM

Overheard on my way to lunch from some woman who was talking loudly on a cell phone: "I think they're protesting that 7-11 was an inside job".

Yeah, Denver got $50 million in federal money for security.

I just drove home from DIA. I've never seen it so hazy.

Don't worry, Chicago doesn't have too much of a chance.

You should have taken the opportunity to find out which one was correct. You could have met a really cool dude in James Hugs.

You know what's wrong with America today? No one's willing to fight for what they believe in to entertain the rest of us. The religious whackjobs were on the mall this afternoon with a bunch of signs stating who all was going to hell (gays, sex addicts, jesus mockers, people who believe in abortions, etc.), and nobody was fighting with them. What's wrong with America today?

And the anarchists. Don't even get me started on the anarchists. After all that talk about disrupting the convention and destroying American government, there was not a peep. Not a peep! That must've been the most disorganized group of anarchists to ever walk the planet. They must've had no leadership at all. The Austro-Hungarian anarchists could start a world war, and these guys couldn't even put together a decent protest. Pathetic!

Cripes. Four days and I didn't get to see one tear gassing.
