Hurricanes $uck

Not just the storm surge, floods, wind, rain & tornadoes that accompany them, but the FREAKING PEOPLE FREAKING OUT! :shake:
Living on the upper Texas coast I'm pretty used to them. But some folks here in Houston are acting like it's the end of the world. Gas lines, water lines, battery lines, people evacuating when they don't need to & getting in the way of those that do, etc...I've had everything I need for the better part of a week now, mainly because we just went through it last week with Gustov. Ike was out there, everyone knew it could come our way, so why not prepare early??? Oh well, it's gonna get interesting...

kcwild 09-11-2008 09:05 AM

You really can't blame them when the local media use words like "catastrophic" to describe the damage potential of Ike. H-town has been extremely lucky in that we haven't had a hurricane hit directly since Alicia. I am encouraged that people are stocking up instead of taking to the roads and creating another parking lot like Rita.

Stay safe!

Good luck, Houston and Galveston.

CoMoChief 09-11-2008 11:01 AM

**** Gustav......work has been a bitch lately.

jidar 09-11-2008 11:05 AM

Well I think you're being a little hard on them. I mean sure they lost to Florida, but it was closer than the score showed, and if Marve can get his vertical game going then they will probably be pretty tough.

morphius 09-11-2008 11:28 AM

Olathe doesn't have to worry about such things.

(some idiot had to say it)

Again, good luck Houston and Galveston.

Coastal storm surge flooding of up to 20 ft above normal tide
levels...along with large and dangerous battering waves...can be
expected near and to the east of where the center of Ike makes
landfall...except at the heads of bays...where surge flooding of up
to 25 ft could occur. Coastal storm surge flooding of 6 to 8 feet
above normal tide levels...along with large and dangerous
waves...can be expected within the Tropical Storm Warning area
along the northern Gulf Coast. Above normal tides in the eastern
Gulf of Mexico should gradually subside over the next day or so.

kstater 09-11-2008 04:57 PM

Am I reading that right? Is it supposed to curl back up to Arkansas Sunday/Monday?
After the last one with it's 12 inches of rain, I don't need another one.

teedubya 09-11-2008 05:01 PM

My sister and her husband live in Houston and my first cousin lives in Baytown. Baytown is a mandatory evacuation.

They are in my prayers.

BigMeatballDave 09-11-2008 05:05 PM

I thought they blow...

If your sister and her husband live north or west houston, it shouldn't be too bad. Baytown is a different story. Traffic for those evacuating is going really smooth, so hopefully all will be well.

Hammock Parties 09-11-2008 08:18 PM

I'll probably just get some rain and wind.

NewChief 09-11-2008 08:23 PM

The weather service is saying that it's "certain death" for people who stay. That's a shocking pronouncement.

Check out this site...You can click on your zip and it tells you the wind velocity you can expect. Pretty cool stuff!

I went down to the Sea Wall today to check it out. I saw Jim Cantori from the Weather Channel right by the Flagship Hotel (For those who don't know it's built on piers and extends out into the Gulf ) - We talked off camera about all the local media hyped hysteria...

Hell, I'm hysterical over the fact that you saw Jim Cantore and lived to tell the tale.

I just saw on the news where the governor said if you do not evacuate it will be kill you. 22 foot surges which was the same as Katrina surges. Sorry but the thought of a 22 foot wall of water coming at me would be enough for me to get the hell out of dodge. Galveston is really in danger.

I have also heard gas will be about 5 bucks a gallon tomorrow.:cuss:

Hell the stores did not pay the higher price for what they have in the ground tonight. This pisses me off.:cuss::cuss:

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-11-2008 11:46 PM

Does GoChiefs live in Houston or a discreet suburb?

You may damn well be kilt, GC.

Galveston - yes! Especially the west side of the island because there is no sea wall there. Houston - not so much - especially areas like Sugarland, Katy, Bellaire etc which will be west of landfall. Certainly not " certain death" danger...
With regards to the price of gas tomorrow - I filled up all my vehicles before the storm. We'll see what happens...

No. I was in a silver Ford Esacpe and was parked about 100 yards up the beach on the wall in front of the San Loius Resort. I saw him right after he got back from Surfside. I saw a film crew by the Flagship and walked over there. We talked for a good 15 minutes. Then he did another "live shot" and headed back to Surfside. We tried to keep a group of idiots from acting like reeruns behind him. For the most part, we were successful.

Good luck to you Tex. Maybe when it's coming ashore you can take some pics and post them for us and give us some insight in to what a hurricane is like.

Thanks - will try. The worst part is gonna be afterwards when there is no electricity for awhile. I was without power for 3 days in '83 after Hurricane Alecia. Some of the area was without power for several weeks. THAT really sucked because there was a heat wave right afterwards. The "good" thing about this is it's supposed to be cooler afterwards. Still - they said that it could be weeks until power is restored in some places...

Good Luck to you Tex!

Its funny, there is even a little bit of hysteria going on here in San Antonio. HAHAHAH

We went to get some D siz batteries the other night for one of my kids toys, and they were all sold out due to people stocking up for flashlights. Good grief......we will get some rain here, but hardly anything to be hysterical about.

kcvet 09-12-2008 08:04 AM

gas prices will go up now.

Now, this we can agree on. People down here just dont know how to deal with bad weather. Its just not something they are used to or have any tolerance for.

We had an ice storm down here in Jan 07 that shut the city down for 2 days. While dangerous, it was overblow quite a bit.

They will shut down schools for ANYTHING.

80+ mph winds downtown? That's going to be fun.

a known issue on gulf coast...Mexico around to Panama City FLA...... don't like it move.

Deberg_1990 09-12-2008 01:23 PM

Good Lord........Some people...

http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/wea...ide_sweep.html

Police Chief Randy Smith said an unknown number of people had ignored mandatory evacuation orders.

"We are not sure how many people we have," Smith said. "We will check them one-by-one."

Smith said he did his best to convince residents to climb aboard his high-riding Mack truck, but authorities believe about six people are riding out the storm.

``We asked them to write their Social Security number on their arm for us,'' Smith said.

One of those who planned to stay behind was 47-year-old Bobby Taylor.

``It's dangerous, but it's mother nature. There are good parts about it. It's beautfiful. The water doesn't frighten me,'' Taylor said as waves rolled over his lawn. He said he could walk or kayak out if necessary. ``It's just water, man.''

David Fields, a carpenter who lives a few doors down, also said he was staying.

``This is my home,'' Fields said.

I heard all of the media in Galvaston is in some WW2 bunker.

Phobia 09-13-2008 01:31 AM

You guys hang in there. We're watching closely. Most my in-laws are in Houston and we have countless friends in the city. In fact, I lived in League City when I first moved there in 95. League City is just north of Galveston and I was always very nervous about a Hurricane coming through.

They're saying over 1 million customers without power in Houston. And the hardest part of the storm hasn't hit yet.

There are also several reports saying that there have been a number of emergency calls from Galveston from people asking for help to be rescued.... which is a scary thought.

TEX 09-13-2008 01:41 AM

It's HERE and things are pretty radical...
Sideways rain and very windy - things tearing up all around me and a bunch of stuff banging off the house. So far am holding up okay - no power which makes it worse. The eye is close so gonna go outside and check
things out in a bit...

THIS IS WAY COOL but VERY SCARY!

Frazod 09-13-2008 01:43 AM

Well, best of luck to everybody.

There was apparently some Godawful train wreck in L.A. that killed several people earlier today as well.

What a lovely day. :spock:
