NFT: M$ - No more Seinfeld ads

Quote:

Remember those awful Microsoft ads with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates? Well, now you can forget them. Microsoft flacks are desperately dialing reporters to spin them about "phase two" of the ad campaign — a phase, due to be announced tomorrow, which will drop the aging comic altogether. Microsoft's version of the story: Redmond had always planned to drop Seinfeld. The awkward reality: The ads only reminded us how out of touch with consumers Microsoft is — and that Bill Gates's company has millions of dollars to waste on hiring a has-been funnyman to keep him company. Update: In a phone call, Waggener Edstrom flack Frank Shaw confirms that Microsoft is not going on with Seinfeld, and echoes his underlings' spin that the move was planned. There is the "potential to do other things" with Seinfeld, which Shaw says is still "possible." He adds: "People would have been happier if everyone loved the ads, but this was not unexpected." Update: CPB confirms that Seinfeld spots already in the can will not be aired.

It was definitely better than the pretentious, misleading Apple ads.

QuikSsurfer 09-18-2008 05:04 PM

I thought the ads were ridiculously pointless and reeruned... To spend that kind of money on a ad that doesn't sell anything... wat?

They have to run these ads past test audiences. I'm sure tinyevel would agree with me. Then they would have never been aired. Or re-shot a different way.

That ad was confusing and disappointing. Microsoft dropped the egg on that one.

QuikSsurfer 09-18-2008 05:11 PM

I'm interested, care to explain?

Yes. The apple ads say untrue things and attempt to pass them off as true.

Microsoft Vistas "Hidden Camera" Ad:

Guy in suit: You've been testing this new software for a half-hour now. Did you know that you're actually using Microsoft Vistas?

Test guy: Actually, I haven't started yet. The software is still loading.

I thought the MS ads were an attempt to deflect some of the 'evil empire' reputation and cast themselves as 'not the PC guy from the Mac ads'. Clumsy execution.

Pablo 09-18-2008 05:44 PM

When are the f***ing dudes from the Mac and PC ads going to die?

Thos things have been running like Eleventyfive years now. And they aren't humorous at all.

That's the next round.... "Hi, I'm a PC, and I've been made into a stereotype".

Stanley Nickels 09-18-2008 06:04 PM

Word is, they're going to attempt to parody the Mac ads now.

Do they truly forget the adage, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? If you're not worried about Mac, do your own thing. That's why I liked their Seinfeld ads. But, alas, it seems they are worried.

Rausch 09-18-2008 06:06 PM

It seems like every 6 months Apple ups the "how much a commercial can suck" ante and never fails to overachieve.

Now we can argue the nuances of the Windows/APPLE "how much your adds blow" debate for years...

As insufferable as the Mac adds are you think Gates need to mimic every single move Apple does would finally hit a dead end...

Depends.

Their PC vs Mac ads leave much to be desired since they started. However, their product ads are among the best.

I heard somewhere (maybe here?) that those Sonic commercials are filmed in Lee's Summit. I wonder if that's true.

Speaking of Sonic, one finally opened up here in August. There had never been a Sonic within 150 miles of Chicago before, yet they've advertised enough that everybody's heard of them. My wife always drives me nuts wanting Sonic whenever we go to Missouri - of course, to me, it's just friggin Sonic - I've eaten at them all my life - who cares? But when they opened the new one up here, they had cars lined up for hours before it even opened, and the wait was HOURS LONG, all day, for weeks. They actually had to snake two lines of cars (one for parking, one for drive-thru) through a nearby parking lot. All that over a friggin Sonic. :spock: The wife was pestering the hell out of me to take her there, but there was no way I was going to wait two hours for a damn cheeseburger. We finally went one night when it was pouring rain and were able to get in.

Never underestimate the power of (apparently very) effective marketing.

They actually have pretty good burgers, IMO. Not quite as good as Wendy's but better than Burger King.

Oh, and those Seinfeld/Gates commercials were lame. Good riddance.

The whole Seinfeld MS ad campaign is a microcosm of the way MS handles their entire computing platform.

I always found those commercials easier to take when I changed the channel to the test pattern.

Baby Lee 09-18-2008 07:36 PM

Anyone know where to catch them? They're the ONLY commercials I've seen in forever.

Maybe I was the one guy in their target audience, but I skip EVERYTHING, but if I catch a glimpse of Jerry or Bill in passing through, I'd hop back and give it a glance.

Those Sonic ads are actually quite brilliant. TJ Jagadowski is a master improviser and his Chicago shows always sell out. The ads themselves are improvised and range from amusing to hilarious. It's easily one of the best ad campaigns on television and I don't understand how anybody could hate them.

The Mac-PC ads were clever at first but now are boring and overdone. That being said, John Hodgman (the guy who plays the PC) is absolutely brilliant. Anybody who has not read The Areas of My Expertise needs to run out and buy it right now. It's hilarious.

He's also great on The Daily Show.

Man, I just saw why they ditched the Seinfeld campaign.
Their new commercial where they introduce 'the PC' and point out how he's been made into a caricature, and then follow up people announcing their flaws, saying 'they're' a PC.

Trenchant.

beach tribe 09-18-2008 08:08 PM

morphius 09-18-2008 08:33 PM

There are few ad campaigns that deserved to be cut more than this one.

irishjayhawk 09-18-2008 09:44 PM

New MS Ads:

They at least have a point. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd want to use Windows after seeing the commercial.

I'm kind of disappointed to see Microsoft give up on these ads. They were so utterly pitiful and unfunny that it actually made or fascinating T.V.

And to all of you saying the Mac/PC ads are played out, I disagree. They are brilliant and effective. Why should Apple let up on them? The new one where PC "banishes" Mac is great. I will admit the pizza box one is kind of weak, though.

I also love the Sonic ads, they never get old.
