Elijah Johnson signs with KU

Didn't see it posted

LAWRENCE -- Elijah Johnson, a guard from Cheyenne High School in Las Vegas, on Monday signed his letter of intent to play at Kansas.
He is the second signee for KU in the class of 2009, one that, with forward Thomas Robinson, is shaping up as an unusually athletic class.

"If (Johnson) was on our team right now, he would, hands down, be the best athlete on our team," Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Johnson (6-foot-2, 183) is the No. 27 player in his class according to Rivals.com. He chose KU over Oklahoma and Texas.

"We've been recruiting Elijah for a long time, tried to get him to commit last year and couldn't get it done," Self said. "He's a phenomenal athlete, one of the best athletes in the class. He's not a true point guard, but we think he can become that. He's just a running, jumping, scoring, fast, active guard right now that can play point, but is more of a combo than a point."

Self said Johnson still needs to "learn how to play" but doesn't expect that to be a problem.

"We think his potential is very, very high," Self said. "He has a chance to be a terrific player. Athletically, he'll have very few equals."

Kansas is still looking for at least one more commitment from the class of 2009.

This is a great confidence boost to his players. What a stupid thing to say.

Meh no big deal. If he's that great of an athelete they should be fine with it and welcome him with open arms.

After watching the first few games I would say the statement doesn't necessarily say much about how great of an athlete he is.

teedubya 11-17-2008 05:38 PM

2010 is shaping up to be another run at the 'ship. Love this signing... yes, now Xavier Henry or John Wall please.

Not if Henry signs with Memphis first.

Never heard of him.

If we sign either Wall, Henry, or Cheeks then this will be a better class than that Chalmers, Rush, and Wright class of 2005. Either way, KU dominance in the future is still imminent. Except for probably this year.

Yeah, this year could be a little rough...I'm very excited about the future though.

Hey that's how big time college athletic programs do it, might as well run with it and just so you know we are reserving that coaching spot for Xavier Henry or John Wall's dad.

ArrowheadHawk 11-17-2008 07:42 PM

This guy orally committed on 10/19/2008. So this isn't really a big news story. He just made it official.

Thanks, thats what I was thinking too.

KCChiefsMan 11-17-2008 08:36 PM

nice. in 2009/20010 we will be back on top and contending again. I'll take a year or 2 of mediocrity for a championship

KevB 11-17-2008 10:47 PM

FYI, lots of noise on several sites about Xavier Henry committing to Memphis tomorrow morning. We'll see....

KevB 11-17-2008 11:39 PM

Just announced during Memphis' game on ESPN right now that Henry will pick a school on ESPN tomorrow morning at 7:45.

Reerun_KC 11-17-2008 11:41 PM

I saw that...

Kind of exciting...

I hope he picks KU, that would be killer!

Of course it would be to Memphis if you are reading a Memphis Board. I have not heard that he was announcing until the spring, but maybe his grill has healed up enough from the car wreck. Onto kusports.com I go

BWillie 11-18-2008 01:02 AM

On second thought after further research, apparently ESPN announced during the Memphis & UMass game that X is making his decision tomorrow morning at 745 am. From all other sources, it appears X is going to Memphis because CJ Henry already signed to Memphis and he wants to be with his brother.

Evans looked good tonight. Made a few bad shots and a couple travels but that happens in the first few games. Definitely has the right speed to fit into that offense perfectly.

Ultra Peanut 11-18-2008 01:21 AM

Yeah, Rose looked a lot like Evans at this point last year. The talent was obvious, but he hadn't completely adjusted to college speed yet.

Spoon still needs to bulk up, but he's going to be ridiculous when he puts it all together.

BWillie 11-18-2008 01:33 AM

I can't tell you how bad I hate Memphis and that punk Dorsey. And their whiny head coach. I just can't help it. Now with X going to Memfizz, I can't even fathom how much I will despise them.

How can any KU fan hate Memphis? They practically handed the National Championship to you on a silver platter last year.

teedubya 11-18-2008 02:37 AM

Call me crazy, but I'd rather have teh 2008 National Championship than one high school basketball player who will be one and done at KU. I prefer 3 year ballers.

False dichotomy, Ari. One and dones PLUS great multi-year players = success.

Silock 11-18-2008 03:18 AM

XH won't be coming to KU. Sorry, guys. I just never got that feeling.

However, this will open up the door for some other guys that may have been waiting on X's decision, like Wall.
