</td> </tr> </tbody></table> The San Francisco 49ers fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz on Tuesday after one season with the team.

Martz was let go Tuesday by Mike Singletary, who was made the permanent coach of the team Sunday night after going 5-4 as the interim coach. Upon taking over, Singletary benched J.T. O'Sullivan, Martz's chosen quarterback, and installed Shaun Hill at the position.

"After an evaluation period I felt it was best to go in a different direction," Singletary said in a statement. "This was not an easy decision because I appreciate Mike Martz, and I enjoyed working with him. He is a true professional, and I wish him the best in the future. I do recognize the need for a long term solution on the offensive side of the ball."

The 57-year-old Martz coached the Rams from 2000-05, taking a medical leave of absence after five games in his final season because of heart problems. He coached the Rams to the 2002 Super Bowl and was the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis team that won the 2000 title with "The Greatest Show On Turf."

Before joining the 49ers, Martz was offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions in 2006-07.

Craziness all over the league.

When do we get our "Herm is fired" thread? :(

RealSNR 12-30-2008 05:19 PM

Sweet Jesus...

And here we are waiting on a GM to make a decision about our dumbass head coach that should have never been hired in the first place in NY.

We get a GM in a month and all the great coaches are gone. That's just lovely :cuss:

It is mind boggling that he's not gone yet.

Other than the fact that Clark has REPEATEDLY said that the new GM will have input into Herm's future, and said GM hasn't been hired yet - yeah, it's mind boggling.

Come on man. no GM in his right mind will keep him. and if you somehow find one that will keep him...well.. then that GM is pretty ****ing stupid. 9-7/4-12/2-14. definite improvement there. and he continues to use rebuilding as an excuse and counts the close losses. when losing becomes acceptable it's time for the loser to go.

Clark Hunt should be fired.

He'll go.

Honestly, It makes no ****ing difference whether Clark fires him now, or the new GM fires him later.

We're not hiring a new HC until we hire a new GM.

Period.

Than that's Peterson's fault for waiting till the last minute to resign. you have to act quickly with this shit or you'll lose out on good HC candidates when they're available.

How are we going to lose out on good HC candidates when the majority of them CAN'T TAKE A JOB UNTIL THEIR SEASON ENDS WITH THEIR CURRENT TEAM?

WTF makes this so goddamn hard for people to ****ing comprehend?

FloridaMan88 12-30-2008 06:38 PM

Mike Martz and Al Saunders need to be on the Chiefs offensive coaching staff next season in some capacity.

Exactly my thought.

He's a moron when he's got a headset on, but he's an outstanding positions coach. He's largely credited with the development of Trent Green and Marc Bulger. Not a bad two QBs to have on your resume, especially considering that these guys were complete nobodies.

Saunders has a pretty insane amount of experience coaching WRs. Not a bad option as well, but I'm not as excited about this possibility. I actually like having a young guy like Price instead. I think putting too many strong-minded guys on the same staff would only create a power struggle.

You must hate that Arena Football got shutdown this year.

'Hamas' Jenkins 12-31-2008 01:14 AM

Martz should be hired as a QB coach and nothing above that whatsoever.

Yeah, but I'd pay him the same I paid my OC. If you're going to draft a QB for a $50M commitment, it is insane not to throw a few $M to a really talented QB coach to give him the best chance to develop.

pr_capone 12-31-2008 02:14 AM

There are three things that need to happen if I were to be ok with giving herm one more year.

This is one of them.
Sign Martz as a QB coach to replace Curl.

The other 2 would be:

1. Hire a new DC and replace Cunningham.
2. Hire a new ST coach and replace Mike Priefer.
