Cowher doesn't want to coach so get Shanny!

No other titles, just HC. He would be fantastic to have and no I don't care if half the city hates him.

You're clamoring for the coach who's averaged 8 wins a year since his last division title?

His best years were shared with a guy named John Elway.

I'm kind of viewing him as like Bradford. If the other options are gone, he'll be fine I guess.

Mile High Mania 12-30-2008 05:43 PM

I said this on another thread... but, I think he's worn out. Shanahan hasn't had time off really since the 80s.

He went from being on Reeve's staff, to OAK and then the 49ers where he helped them win a title... then, since 1995 he has been the man in Denver. That's a long damn time and I think he has burnout.

I haven't seen that fire or creativity in a few years. The last couple of drafts were great and that inspired him a bit, but he needs to step away and recharge. Take a year off and he'll still be on the top of any team's list looking for a HC.

But this is the Broncos we're talking about here. It's apt.

Elway has been retired for 10 years. Shanahan has 4 below .500 seasons in his 14 years with Denver. 3 of those were 8-8 seasons. The other was 7-9. I wouldn't give him a GM's job, but I'd definitely be interested in talking with him.

I'm not saying you're an idiot if you ultimately don't want him, but I think it's dumb to not want to sit down and talk to a guy who went 146-98 in Denver over 14 years. 10 of them without Elway.

If we're talking NFL resumes... No one.
But the reality of the matter is that this guy has won 24 games his last three NFL seasons.

He just pissed away a three game lead to a team everyone thought was dead in the water. With one last opportunity to send his team to the post-season the Broncos got trounced by a bad San Diego team.

He had an absolutely terrible D coordinator. That is his one weakness and probably cost him his job. He didn't want to fire Slowik.

Since Elway retired he's managed to lead the Broncos to just 1 division title.
The last three years he's coached his team to 9 wins, 7 wins, and 8 wins (respectively).

He's overrated.

I just went over to NFL.com and looked at the last decade. It was shocking. It seems like Denver is always in the thick of things, but they have been downright mediocre since 1999. I retract my previous statements, and apologize for making anyone dumber for having listened to it. He is overrated.

I wouldn't say that. They've had 4 playoff appearances since '99.
Three of them resulted in losses in the opening round though.

He had a three year run that was pretty impressive. '03-'05. I thought that was his best chance at winning another Superbowl. He fell just short in the one chance he had (losing to Pittsburgh).

The last 3 years? Definitely mediocre.

Mr. Flopnuts 12-30-2008 06:00 PM

Herm's gotta go first. And, damn it if he isn't still there... I really don't care who the Chiefs HC is for 2009 as long as they don't introduce Herm on opening day. I don't want shanarat but anything is better than Herm

Basileus777 12-30-2008 06:10 PM

Shanahan is a good coach, bad GM. Despite the past, he wouldn't be a bad coach for us.

The only way I would want Shanarat as a coach is if he was an O Coord. But on that same note I don't think Gailey will get or even deserves to get fired and I don't see Shanarat taking anything less then a Coord. position.

R&GHomer 12-30-2008 06:32 PM

Could not agree more. He could use a year off more than any of them. You can see it in him. He is set...time to re-charge.

Great idea.

Nothing says "Develop a young QB" quite like throwing 50 times a game, out of 5 wide sets with no protection, and abandoning your running game.

Recipe for success, I tell you...

Seattle has a head coach. Mora Jr. would be pretty pissed if he got the axe before ever suiting up for a game. Especially since he turned down the coaching gig of his old alma mater a couple of months ago.

Somewhere Arthur Blank would smile though.

Trent Green and Marc Bulger in their primes were Pro Bowl caliber QBs. The Chiefs would will be served if they could develop a young QB into the likes of a Trent Green or Marc Bulger.

And their primes lasted all of 3-4 years. Not nearly long enough.

In Bulger's case, it was a direct result of the beatings he's taken because of Martz' philosophy.

Shanahan will not be coming to KC. He had years left on his contract and will probably be an analyst for a year while he continues to collect his money. Gailey is an excellent OC; if he had more than kids to work with KC would have been a contender. Gailey will stay. Yes, we need a change on defense - either a coaching change or abandon the awful cover-two. As for Edwards, give him another year. His first year was clearly on Peterson's watch, year two was an attempt at putting a band-aid on a corpse. This third year required blowing the whole thing up and stating over. Give him another year with a new GM.
