Kansas City Islanders?

Let the rumors begin:

DREGER: ISLANDERS GOING TO KANSAS CITY FOR A GAME

The New York Islanders are going to Kansas City.

The Islanders have agreed in principle with the Los Angeles Kings to play an exhibition game in Kansas City in September.

This may not seem like that big of a deal in light of the fact other NHL teams have used Kansas City in recent years as a neutral cite for preseason games.

However, according to league sources this game could be perceived as a veiled threat of potential relocation if plans for a new arena on Long Island aren't soon finalized.

Since purchasing the team in 2000, Charles Wang (a Long Island resident who has built most of his businesses there) has refused to threaten to move the franchise if he didn't get an arena deal. However, it's believed Wang is growing frustrated by the fact there has been little progress by local politicians on the Lighthouse Project and Wang's plan to transform Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and surrounding 100-plus acres.

The New York Islanders are nowhere close to moving. But, according to some this mere exhibition game in Kansas City will be considered a major wakeup call to Long Islanders (and their community leaders) who allegedly think the team will stay without a new arena deal.

The Sprint Center in Kansas City is operated by AEG, whose CEO Tim Leiweke is a governor of the Los Angeles Kings.

In 2007, Leiweke made a strong play for the Pittsburgh Penguins, offering Pens ownership free rent at the Sprint Center if the team, mired at the time in a similar arena debate, moved to Kansas City.

Scare tactics worked in this case because in March of 2007 the Penguins and government officials agreed on a $290 million arena deal to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

Shortly after the decision to stay in Pittsburgh was made Leiweke expressed his desire to the Kansas City Star to bring an NHL franchise to the city:

"I hoped things would move more quickly. But no teams have moved since we started on the building. It's very competitive out there. Municipalities don't want to lose their teams."

The New York Islanders don't want to leave Long Island, however as this negotiation with local politicians drags on the potential for speculation to become reality will grow as well.

Buck 01-15-2009 01:46 PM

Wouldn't the Kansas City Penguins have to move out first?

kepp 01-15-2009 01:47 PM

Next week's headline: "Islanders to get new arena on Long Island"

OnTheWarpath15 01-15-2009 01:47 PM

WANG.

Gonzo 01-15-2009 01:48 PM

Ok Gang....

Ultra Peanut 01-15-2009 01:48 PM

I only support this move if they retain their name.

GO WHATEVERS!

sedated 01-15-2009 01:50 PM

KC being used for leverage once again.

morphius 01-15-2009 01:51 PM

Well, if we don't get a team we can at least continue to be used and abused like a two dollar whore.

KC Islanders is almost as dumb as LA Lakers.

Crybaby Power 01-15-2009 01:53 PM

This town won't support a NHL team. They practically have to give away tickets the last time NHL came to the Sprint Center and there were maybe 8 thousand people there.

While on the subject of hockey I'm really pissed they decided to tear down Crackerneck Golf course in Independence only to replace it with a ****in Hockey rink arena for a semi pro team.........in Independence, MO............yup..........just what the community wants/needs. Whoever made that great decision needs to place his nuts under the guillotine.

Ultra Peanut 01-15-2009 01:54 PM

Yeah, because the community really needs a place for a bunch of old white dudes to hang out and make excuses for why they suck more than a hockey arena.

Molitoth 01-15-2009 01:55 PM

Hope we could change the team name/logo.

I guess only old white dudes play golf?

Heres what i do know........about 99.999999999999% of the people in KC that don't go to private schools don't ****ing play ice hockey.

Um....that Golf Course hasnt existed for years.

It basically got torn down for Costco, McDonalds and a few other franchise eateries.

A) I disagree about the NHL in Kansas City. But that's an opinion thing, so i won't spend much time on it.

B) Crackerneck being torn down for an arena?
You obviously don't have any clue what you are talking about. There happens to be an arena going in, but there's is a hell of a lot more...and has been for years.

Crybaby Power 01-15-2009 02:13 PM

If by "right," you actually mean, "I've got no idea what these words I'm typing atually mean."
Then...yes...you win.

blaise 01-15-2009 02:20 PM

Right, because it would be smart to move from a media market of about 15 million people to KC.
If I was Long Island I'd say, "Go ahead. Let me see you go."

Well the economy is so good I can see why a sports team owner would think he could jam the public up for millions of tax dollars.

Thig Lyfe 01-15-2009 02:25 PM

God, I hope they keep their name if they do move here.

Los Angeles Lakers... Utah Jazz... KANSAS CITY ISLANDERS. BOOYAH.

Crybaby Power 01-15-2009 02:34 PM

HEY LETS GET A WNBA TEAM AS WELL!!!!!!!! THAT WILL BE SURE TO SUCCEED!!!!!!!

KC has historically had the highest NHL tv ratings of any non-NHL city.

I've seen empty seats at the last two CBE Classics when local teams weren't involved, so that must mean we don't like college basketball.

The Islanders have been rumored to be moving for the last few years... eh.

Your schtick is already old... I think you need trolling lessons from MV.

The exhibition NBA game at the Sprint Center only drew about 1,000 more people than the exhibition NHL game did.

I really wouldnt read too much into exhibition games.

Nobody cares about exhibition games from out of town teams. Why should they care??

I know the Red Wings would like to play more of their old Eastern rivals so a switch could be done real easy if the Isles move. Hockey is a sport that I think KC would get hooked on if they see it live. Its pretty darn cool live, I would rather have the NBA but I could live with the NHL.

Demonpenz 01-15-2009 05:09 PM

I would rather have an nba team, I would only go to hockey games , if the might pittsburgh pengions happened to grace this area with their awesomeness

I hate NBA; boring as sin. I think they need to move the rim up to around 18'.

seeing a 7' dude dunk isn't really that impressive.

NBA is a thousand times better in person.

Hockey is the #1 live sporting even in my opinion. I like to watch NBA games and all but the only times that really matter are at the ends of the halves. I hate watching millionaires walk up and down the court.

I agree but those who say NBA sucks, need to see it person. It really is alot better than on tv.

I'm not saying they should care, just that the results were similar.

The NBA is by far the biggest waste of talent of any sports league at any level. If the NBA was about talent and not flopping and free throw shooting, I'd probably watch it more than other sports.

I watched a few playoff games last year... up to the point where Paul Pierce was sort of driving on LeBron James, and they BOTH flopped backwards (note to floppers: if two of you are running in the same direction, flop in the same direction :doh!: ). Even LeBron James' most unbelievable shot came when he was trying to draw a foul.

It's a disgrace.

I was disagreeing with his opinion of NHL in I'd. I think it would be great here. And sure they'd be leaving a huge market, but they are also splitting that market with 3 other teams.
