Sounds like there's a real good chance Herm will indeed wind up in Indy...

Edwards told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer that he was fired at 3 p.m. CT, with new general manager Scott Pioli telling him the team wanted to go in another direction.

"That's OK," Edwards told FOXSports.com. "I told (Pioli) I didn't need an explanation. I understand the business. I'm OK with it.

"I'm going to take until after the weekend to decide what I want to do next. I need to talk to my wife and see which direction I want to go."

Edwards said he will decide between taking time off, doing TV, and being a defensive backs coach, a job he truly enjoyed before becoming head coach of the New York Jets. Edwards said he does not want to be a defensive coordinator.

The Franchise 01-23-2009 05:28 PM

Yeah....he doesn't want to be a DC because he's ****ING HORRIBLE AT IT.

Not surprising. Herm has never been a coordinator.

He would probably be a very good defensive back coach.

Kraus 01-23-2009 05:30 PM

...or he finally realized he isn't fit for the job of head coach.

North Dakota Chief 01-23-2009 05:30 PM

Herm can be the quality control assistant on my Pop Warner staff.

talastan 01-23-2009 05:30 PM

Herm can't head coach for sh**! But he defintely has an eye for DB's. I'd say this would be the best place for him IMO. That said, pack your bags Herm and get GTFO of town!! :thumb:

Archie Bunker 01-23-2009 05:32 PM

I wish him well.

Yeah no shit. I truly believe hes too dumb, or he just plain doesn't pay attention sometimes. He probably would have trouble knowing what ****in down it was.

bishop_74 01-23-2009 05:34 PM

OK... to be clear... isn't this the second head coach we have had that could not only not get another HC gig, but can't even get a coordinator position either? Whats the common factor?

Fixed Fox's Post.

stevieray 01-23-2009 07:50 PM

it's not that far fetched to think dungy would endorse him for the job in Indy.

Yea Jon Hoke

doomy3 01-23-2009 08:14 PM

I really do wish him well. Think he's a good guy.

Mr. Laz 01-23-2009 08:27 PM

being a defensive backs positional coach is probably just where he belongs.

that's one of the biggest things Pioli can do is for us to stop putting coaches and players higher than they belong.

if a player should be a backup then lets make sure he's a backup
if a coach should be a coordinator, then dammit, make sure he's a coordinator or lower

Bwana 01-23-2009 08:28 PM

Hey, as long as he's gone, I don't give a rats ass where he ends up. The only other thing I can say is....................The poor bastards.

Yep. I remember Skip always talked about the "Peter Principle" when it came to Herm. I actually had to look it up... it fits.

Just think... 2 years ago the Chiefs had essentially a defensive backs coach as a head coach (Herm), an offensive line coach as an offensive coordinator (Slowlari) and a linebackers coach who is somehow still getting a job as a defensive coordinator (Goonther).

That is Exhibit A of the Peter Principle

rtmike 01-23-2009 09:23 PM

Well, we got the two Brandons' & Maurice Leggett from his DB expertise so it wasn't all for naught.

I'll give Herm props for not needing an explanation and taking it like a man.

More than likely he didn't want to hear his utter failure recapped, though.

I'm completely convinced that Herm's a stand up guy. An all-around genuinely good man.

As a person, it's hard not to like him. As a coach? Ehhhh...

He was just over his head.

Well, he's not that stand-up. He never took the blame for anything.

That's why I give him props for this. He didn't throw anyone under the bus...unlike Gunther.

At least he didn't baracade himself in his home for days like Goonther did after he was fired.
