Chiefs get Mr. irrelavant

NFL awards Lions one compensatory draft pick

by Tom Kowalski Monday March 23, 2009, 7:40 PM

The NFL released its list of teams awarded with compensatory picks in the 2009 NFL draft, and the Detroit Lions will get the second to last pick in the seventh round, No. 255 overall.

The Kansas City Chiefs got the final pick of the draft at No. 256.
Teams who the NFL determines have a net loss of players in the previous season – in terms of quantity and quality – are eligible to receive extra picks in the draft.
However, the Lions were not awarded any compensatory picks based on the compensatory pick formula. Detroit and Kansas City were each given a compensatory pick based on the 2009 draft selection order.
By rule, two additional picks are awarded at the end of the seventh round to bring the total number of compensatory selections to 32, equaling the number of NFL clubs.

Rain Man 03-23-2009 06:31 PM

That's a very odd rule. Why do the number of picks have to equal the number of teams? Every team doesn't get a pick. And why wouldn't the Rams have gotten the final pick?

Hog's Gone Fishin 03-23-2009 06:32 PM

If Curry is available I'd take him in a heartbeat!

Hootie 03-23-2009 06:32 PM

This is going to be HUGE. Our very own Tom Brady. THE DEAL IS DONE!

Buehler445 03-23-2009 06:33 PM

I'll take it. I'll take everydraft pick we can get.

I'll be pissed if we don't get an immediate starter.

The Rams and Chiefs had the same record. Since the Rams won the tiebreaker to pick #2, the Chiefs get the consolation prize (#256).

Glenn Dorsey is entering this year's draft?

Hog's Gone Fishin 03-23-2009 06:55 PM

We should trade the pick to the raiders for their 2nd and 3rd !

There's our sleeper late round QB. It's been Pioli's plan all along.

The next Tom Brady. Book it.

Frazod 03-23-2009 06:56 PM

It'll be nice to have Mr. Irrelevant on the field instead of on the coaching staff.

Rain Man 03-23-2009 07:01 PM

Carl would've never gotten us this pick. This is all Pioli's work.

Perfect place to get a pure long snapper cheap. Is there one in this draft?

tonyetony 03-23-2009 08:37 PM

Looks like Sean Griffin, Michigan and Jake Ingram, Hawai are the only long snappers getting any press. Both project in the 6th or 7th.

RustShack 03-23-2009 09:49 PM

Has the last pick ever ended up being any good?

BryanBusby 03-23-2009 09:50 PM

The Chiefs are totally getting the QBotF with this pick.

Reerun_KC 03-23-2009 09:54 PM

When I read the title, first thing I thought to myself was....

"Not another Matt Cassel thread"

Haha! Yessssss! The Governor's cup AND the 7th rounder. Suck my ass, Rams! Hahahahaha!

Wilson8 03-23-2009 10:43 PM

Types of players KC might draft with this pick.

QBs - Curtis Painter - Purdue, Chris Pizzotti – Harvard, Jason Boltus – Hartwick, Brian Hoyer - Michigan State, and Chase Holbrook - New Mexico State.

OTs – Scott Burley – Maryland, Dace Richardson – Iowa, Ryan Delrosal – Dixie State, Ryan McKee – Southern Miss, Ramon Foster – Tennessee, Jose Valdez – Arkansas, and Dan Gay – Baylor.

Kickers – Conor Lee – Pittsburgh, Jeff Wolfert – Missouri, and Pat McAfee – West Virginia

LS – Jake Ingram – Hawaii, Sean Griffin – Michigan, and Mark Estermyer - Pittsburgh

I like it. One last chance to pick up a low cost player.

Sure-Oz 03-23-2009 10:44 PM

Grab Wolfert, wtf not

Probably not? But considering its the Chiefs pick, we will have to listen to plenty of "let him prove in on the field" Or crap about him not given a fair chance, just because he was the last pick, doesnt mean he doesnt have it, bullcrap....

I am sure some True Fan will latch on to his nutsack and make the board almost impossible to read with their lip service...

Ultra Peanut 03-24-2009 12:31 AM

This is the most exciting news I've heard all month.

ClevelandBronco 03-24-2009 12:36 AM

I may be remembering incorrectly, but wasn't Shannon Sharpe a 7th rounder?

You'll surely find one of his like.

bdeg 03-24-2009 12:48 AM

I like the # 256... could be good luck

James Smith has been the long snapper and played on coverage units for the Gators over the last few years. He wont be drafted, though.

Mike Green started a few years for the Bears.

But the most relevant Mr. Irrelevant the Chargers snagged ended up being one of their greatest players in franchise history. The Oakland Raiders picked a kicker from California-Davis with the 335th and final selection of the 1977 draft. But the Raiders didn't really need a kicker with the ageless Errol Mann entrenched there, so they let Mr. Irrelevant go during training camp.

The Chargers, meanwhile, had lost their kicking tandem from the previous year to other teams. Toni Fritsch went to Houston and Ray Wersching headed up the coast to San Francisco. Enter Rolf Benirschke.

Benirschke took over sole possession of the kicking duties in San Diego and the rest, as they say, is history. Benirschke ended up being one of the best kickers in the NFL during his 10-year career. He's second on the all-time Chargers' list with 766 career points and 208 field goals made, but he's mostly remembered for his game-winning field goal against Miami in the 1981 divisional playoffs, an overtime thriller deemed as one of the best playoff games ever played.

Benirschke is the only Mr. Irrelevant to play in the Pro Bowl, selected following the 1983 season. That year, he was 43-of-45 on extra point attempts and 15-of-24 on field goals. Oddly enough, he was better in 1984, nailing all 41 PATs and 17-of-26 field goals, yet wasn't chosen for the Pro Bowl. By the time his career ended in 1986, he had set 16 Charger team records and was inducted into the Chargers' Hall of Fame in 1997.

Benirschke may be more famous for his short stint as host of Wheel of Fortune and his bout with Crohns Disease that nearly ended his career, but his distinction as a "successful" Mr. Irrelevant no doubt gives hope to the last guy taken in the draft each year.

So, as you're keeping track of the picks, keep an eye on the final selection. Mr. Irrelevant just might end up becoming a star.

Kerberos 03-24-2009 08:33 AM

We may not have drafted him but I'm sure we had Mr. Irrelavant a couple of years ago and he went under the name Ty Law.

gblowfish 03-24-2009 08:56 AM

We should just draft Bill Kenney again with that pick.

Except that Benirschke WASN'T Mr. Irrelevant. The author of that article got his wires crossed. 1977 Mr. Irrelevant was Jim Kelleher, RB, Colorado, pick #335 (Benirschke was #334).

http://www.irrelevantweek.com/past-irr.htm

1977
Jim Kelleher, FB University of Colorado

Pick #335 by Minnesota Vikings

There is no truth to the tale that the NFL draft was reduced to 12 rounds in order to give Mr. Irrelevant a better chance of making an NFL roster. It didn't help Jim Kelleher, a fullback from Colorado, who got to play an exhibition game in the L.A. Coliseum before his newly-made Orange County friends, but was cut the following week by the Minnesota Vikings. Kelleher's presence at many Irrelevant Weeks throughout the years has made him a leader among IW alumni. He currently lives in Boulder, Colo., and owns Advertising Specialty Co.

Jim Kelleher - ignored by reporters since at least 2004. Now THAT'S Irrelevance.

With the shrewd evaluators of talent we have now this could be the pick for the QBOTF after Cassell leaves.

Yeah, I'm inclined to believe that the 2009 Draft, QBOTF will be parking his ass on another team's bench.

But I'm sure we'll get to enjoy watching him kick our ass for MANY years to come!
