Never could get into these guys. Never understood their hippie followers, either.

it's a mix of rock, folk, alternative, great music, and each of the players are in the top 5 of their position in the world

I'm convinced you're a closeted Beaker.

I saw them open for Phish in 1994 in Alabama. Did not enjoy.

I like em Penz :thumb:

Hammock Parties 03-29-2009 07:31 PM

Not only do they suck, Dave's voice is a blight on humanity.

Heh. I couldn't stand them because their followers were a bunch of frat drunks, not hippies. I was hard core Phish/Dead hippie back then, and I thought their crowd were a bunch of drunken idiots (in contrast to tripping idiots).

KevB 03-29-2009 07:39 PM

I'm a big fan, despite the fact it's apparently not cool here on CP. Good choice Sam, #41 one of my favorites. I appreciate the fact that they really seem to enjoy playing, and Dave comes across as an everyman that gets how lucky he is. Beyond that, they use an interesting mix of instruments (at least to me), and it flows pretty well.

Well, sounds like you know what you're talking about in realation to their fans. Just to clarify - YOU'RE the stoner hippie and Penz is the frat boy drunk? :D

Former stoner hippie, but correct. ;)

I actually like their music okay now, I just never got over that initial bad experience enough to really embrace them.

Demonpenz 03-29-2009 09:50 PM

Honestly, I like dave, their drummer is one of my favs, I hate their sandel wearing fans. I love metal and love kicking the shit out of people, but I like dave when I am just a sucker for O.A.R and Dave for the simple fact. It feels good grilling and listening to them :)

Thank you for the compliment.

Gravedigger 03-30-2009 07:26 AM

I love some of Dave's earlier work, IE Before these crowded streets, crash, things before everyday. I owe Dave alot of hookups in the past, I would learn a decent amount of the songs on acoustic guitar and play them for women I was dating and it would just almost be a guarantee.

41 is still one of my favorite songs of all time.

beach tribe 03-30-2009 07:50 AM

I'm a Rock/Metal head, but I love Dave, and his band. A model of diversity, and one of the best, and most talented bands to EVER grace the world with music.

Garcia Bronco 03-30-2009 10:42 AM

I like thier sound and think they have a good product, but their music is lacking to my ear.

KCChiefsMan 03-30-2009 02:56 PM

they are good musicians. Just not my style of music. I like to ROCK!

PunkinDrublic 03-30-2009 04:02 PM

Every conversation I've had about Dave Matthews since the nineties:

DMB Fan: I love Dave Matthews you ever listen to his music?

Me: Not really. I don't listen to that type of music.

DMB Fan: You gotta see em live. DMB is awesome live.

Me: Not really a jam band guy. Long unending instrumentals aren't really my thing.

DMB Fan: Dude I'm telling you, if you went to one show it would change your life.

Me: That's cool if you like em, just not what I'm into.

DMB Fan: You would feel different if you saw DMB live.

Thig Lyfe 03-30-2009 09:39 PM

Brilliant thread.

hearing you describe DMB as a jamband just made me throw up in my mouth a little.

Don't sweat it I really don't know anything about the genre. I tend to lump anything with overextended insturmentals as being a jam band.

MTG#10 03-31-2009 05:17 PM

Yeah but you like Nickelback.

Demonpenz 03-31-2009 07:36 PM

dave matthews lyrics aren't reeruned enough to be considered for a jam band

Well obviously Black Flag is not a jam band. Really not into any of their stuff past Damaged.

little bybay! What about asher roth? the next white hype in the hip hop world

ChiefsLV 04-02-2009 10:30 PM

Crash is one of my favorite albums of all time. They're one of my favorite bands. American Baby was the only album I didn't pick up. It just didn't do it for me. I liked Dave's 2003 solo effort a lot too.

I usually listen to rock radio so the first time I heard DMB was about 1995 when I was driving to Florida listening to other stations. At first I thought it was a new Peter Gabriel song I didn't know, I've seen Gabriel in '88 and '93 and he's been a favorite of mine since the 70's. Anyway, over the years I've heard DMB occasionally on the radio and on TV they have shown him on the HD Music channels in concert and I just can't get into his music. I just find it irritating, kind of like a cutting edge Hootie and the Blowfish, which is not good. Sorry.

Nixhex 04-03-2009 02:29 PM

Great musicians. The songs........not so much.

The drummer is real good, but he was real good long before he ever met He Who Shall Not Be Named.

Buehler445 04-03-2009 10:25 PM

Man, They are hellacious instrumentalists, but I really REALLY don't like their songs.

BigChiefFan 04-03-2009 10:32 PM

Great musicians, but a little goes a long ways.

Mecca 04-03-2009 10:34 PM

No offense to people who like them but I can not stand the Dave Matthews band at all.

Sfeihc 04-03-2009 10:48 PM

I've been to a show and something is just missing to me. I think it's the lack of a lead guitar that makes not a big fan of theirs.

stevieray 04-03-2009 11:14 PM

good musicians... but top five?

that's pretty funny.

Archie F. Swin 04-04-2009 12:17 AM

Dave had me at "He wakes up in the morning...."

Carter Beauford is freaking amazing....thats right, I'm a drummer
