Betemit expected to sign with Royals

Source: Betemit expected to sign with Royals — 6:34 p.m.
Veteran utility player Wilson Betemit is expected to sign a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals, one major league source told FOXSports.com.

Betemit spent part of the 2009 season with the White Sox, after the Yankees included him in the Nick Swisher trade. But he batted only .200 in 20 games and didn't play in the majors after June 2. Then he went to Class AAA and hit .241.

Betemit, a switch hitter, has primarily played third base in the major leagues but has experience at all four infield positions. The Royals could view him as a low-cost alternative to the versatile Mark Teahen, who was traded to the White Sox last week.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore is familiar with Betemit, 28, from their time together with the Atlanta Braves. Betemit had his best seasons with the Braves in 2005 and 2006.

Source: Royals committed to Gordon at third — 11:22 a.m.
Despite acquiring Josh Fields from the White Sox, the Royals are committed to Alex Gordon at third base, a source said today.

Fields, instead, is viewed as a possible left fielder if the Royals find a suitable trade for David DeJesus.

Fields had some experience in left with the White Sox.

DeJesus is a steady hitter who had an off year in 2009. He's set to earn $4.7 million next year, followed by a $6 million option (or $500,000 buyout) in 2011.

2010 World Series MVP right there.

CHENZ A! 11-11-2009 07:07 PM

YES!!! TRADE DEJESUS! FINALLY!

SEDATED- What will you do if they trade your boy?! oh no!! LMAO

CoMoChief 11-11-2009 07:07 PM

Oh man the Royals are gonna be sick nasty next season.

58kcfan89 11-11-2009 07:09 PM

He hit .241 in AAA? Yep, sign him up.

On the other hand, I'm glad GMDM seems willing to shake this thing up. As much as I like DeJesus, he's probably a lot more valuable on a contending team. The injuries were annoying, too. Only problem with trading away a productive player like that is that you have to hit on whatever you get back, something I don't entirely trust GMDM to do.

BillSelfsTrophycase 11-11-2009 07:10 PM

Horray, another utility player

Now if we could just get Ross Gload back.....

Mr. Laz 11-11-2009 07:33 PM

sick and tired of seeing the word Utility in front of every player we pick up.

cabletech94 11-11-2009 07:35 PM

Doomed as doomed can be.

DeezNutz 11-11-2009 07:37 PM

Yep, makes sense.

No reason to keep DeJesus, an actual ML talent, when you have to make sure to keep running Guillen's broke dick ass out to RF. It wouldn't make sense for Fields to replace Jose.

Mecca 11-11-2009 07:49 PM

Why can't Fields just play first and dump Jacobs?

Deberg_1990 11-11-2009 07:50 PM

Well this seals it..

The Royals wont compete until 2020 at the earliest...

I'll freak the **** out if Jacobs is on the team this coming year.

And KC needs not to **** with Butterball.

Exactly...plus isn't Dejesus one of those guys we should keep around???

I honestly gave up on the Royals late in the 90's so I'm out of the loop a bit....I still go to games, still root them on, but my investment will return with the franchise's....which will never happen.

Chiefless 11-11-2009 07:53 PM

I think DM really IS trying to build a team of 25 Ross Gloads.

Well I figured he'd DH but either way why can't Fields just take Jacobs spot, that makes the most sense.

Sure, sounds fine.

But I have a hard time thinking that Fields would not be a significant upgrade to Guillen in RF.

Debatable.

Bowser 11-11-2009 08:34 PM

It's scary how the talent level of KC's two pro teams mirror each other.

No way. And there isn't anyone on this board who has hurled more insults at DeJesus than me.

He's an absolute pussy, and one of the worst base runners in the league.

That said, he can hit in the leadoff spot and plays a pretty decent LF. Not great, but, like Teahen, a ML player.

Right, he's serviceable. But I'd hardly call him an MLB talent.

But we agree on the bold.

Think we're debating semantics.

He's a contributing player on most teams in the league, and a clear positive (overall and when used properly) for a dog shit team like the Royals.

Serviceable/playable/ML talent...these are all about the same to me.

Yeah, I got that impression too.

If only we could have seen this...
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1NRkPKNa_H4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1NRkPKNa_H4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

And not Howie Kendrick circling the bases on a routine fly ball. That play still pisses me off.

BigCatDaddy 11-12-2009 08:12 AM

Shouldn't all these moves and potential moves combined with losing either Olivo or Buck free up some salary to spend? Although I'm not real sure where we spend it at, since we seem to have players locked it at all postions except CF and DH. Maybe another starter or better arms in the pen?

Demonpenz 11-12-2009 09:13 AM

If olivo leaves it will be another Ibanez situation. He's going to hit 20 or so bombs if he stays in shape.

BWillie 11-12-2009 09:33 AM

fuck you Dayton Moore.

RockChalk 11-12-2009 09:48 AM

Well that ought to wrap up the AL Central.

Maybe we can sign Jose Molina and lock up BoomBoom to a 5 year 40 million contract while we're at it. I used to have faith in DM and was willing to trust him, but when's he going to realize that he can't turn chicken shit into chicken salad. You can't tell me that we don't have someone in the minors who can provide what Betemit will give us

Stewie 11-12-2009 09:54 AM

Could we please sign someone I've heard of and is a good player? This team is not moving forward IMO.

I agree. Much rather see Olivo and Pena as our catchers and let Buck and his 3 mil a year go.

Not a bad backup player if we need it...doesnt hurt things

DJ's left nut 11-12-2009 10:34 AM

DeJesus would get a job on every single team in MLB. Not necessarily a starting gig, but even the Yankees have a use for David DeJesus.

By definition, he is a MLB talent.

That said, he's an awful fit in KC. He's an okay leadoff option but a very poor run producer playing at a corner OF position. Now if KC had a CFer, C, 2b or SS that could produce runs, using a corner OF position on a mediocre bat wouldn't be a big deal.

However, DeJesus at LF while playing Betancourt, Crisp, Callaspo at SS,CF and 2b means you cannot burn LF on another mediocre bat.

Here, I'll just re-post what I said last year when the Royals were rumored to have traded Teahen.

DeJesus has been devalued a lot by this regime.

Though the Teahen trade was a good one, IMO. You upgraded your speed/Defense with Getz and Fields has light-tower power. He's Jacobs with an actual ceiling and chance to improve.

Sure-Oz 11-12-2009 10:43 AM

DDJ is the wade boggs of LF...trade him for the best value...i think he could help a contender get somewhere more so than the royals
