RnR HOF: The one concert you must see is playing on HBO...
Wow. Watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th anniversary concert(s) last night. There's no way to overstate the magnificence of this concert. Filmed over two nights, this is the VERY BEST lineup I've ever seen. The playlist was astounding. It'll be running on HBO the next few weeks.
The players: Bruce Springsteen (& the E Street Band) U2 Patti Smith Crosby, Stills & Nash Mick Jagger Aretha Franklin Bruce Springsteen Bonnie Rait Jerry Lee Lewis Jackson Brown James Taylor Stevie Wonder Smokey Robinson John Legend B.B. King Sting Jeff Beck Paul Simon Art Garfunkel Dion Little Anthony & the Imperials Aretha Franklin Annie Lennox Metallica Lou Reed Ozzy Osbourne Ray Davies Black Eyed Peas Buddy Guy Billy Gibbons Sam Moore Tom Morello John Fogerty Darlene Love Billy Joel |
I saw some of this. Some of the oldsters were not so good. Jerry Lee Lewis, Aretha Franklin, Lou Reed, all struggled.
Simon & Garfunkle were pretty good. |
Out of that whole list there are only about 4 of them I would ever pay money to see.
Paul Simon James Taylor Stevie Wonder BB King |
Black Eyed Peas? Do they just come with any large event these days? Or is that a desperate attempt to get anyone under the age of 50 to watch it?
|
black eyed peas...:shake:
|
Sounds like a good mix of New and Old.

Did fergie pee her pants?

The way to watch this IMHO is to DVR it then skip through the many parts you find boring, redundant, or too filled with Sting's facial hair.
There are some damn fine moments you just have to sift through some chaff to get to the wheat. |
I'm waiting for the book to come out.
|
Everything else >>>>>>> Black Eyed Peas > Bruce Springsteen
|
Reorder the list by ego and by entertainment value... Ego #1 - Sting, Entertainment Value #1 - Hard to tell
|
Oh.
My. God. Tom Morello's solo during "Ghost of Tom Joad." ****ing. Amazing. |
Go to 1:55 for the solo.

I've watched it twice now. Loved the whole thing.

How was u2?
|
Quote:
U2 was the best part of the show. Possibly because they are currently on tour and were playing tighter than other acts. Played with Springstein, BEP and Jagger. |

Are you saying BB King simply runs blues scales all night long in I IV V style and that Morello could play the blues as well as King? Morello was nice as a one-song stand-in but IMO Jeff Beck he never will be. |

That Morelo solo didn't make musical sense until 3:40 (if you stopped watching, vailpass, the solo was from 1:55 where he starts making turntable noises until the end of the video. The solo is like 2 1/2 minutes long).

Personally, I liked The Boss up there. IIRC, he covered 6 other artists music, plus Patti Smiths version of 'Because The Night' (which he wrote). To me, he showed a lot of enthusiasm and energy for a 60 year old.
In the past, I've seen him cover everything from The Beatles to the Wallflowers. To me, it just shows his love of music. |
Black Eyed Peas just ruined the living hell out of this list.

Fergie was surprisingly good, did the other "band" members do anything?

To compare BB, Jimi, Morello, Kirk Hammett, and Clapton is just something you don't do. They each have their own sound. That doesn't make them necessarily worse than one another, just different. I wanted to point out this particular solo, because even for Morello it was awesome. |
