Poll: Playing surface at Arrowhead

Listening to the KU/MU game on the sirius the other night, I only could listen to the MU broadcast. Actually not a bad broadcast even if it was MU...

I like the annoucer when his player was scoring... "Hes at the 30, 20, 10, House!!!!" Different but pretty cool.

Okay, back to topic. I couldnt help agreeing with them, but the grass surface at Arrowhead is shit. They blasted the field all broadcast calling it prue crap and one the of the worst surfaces MU has played on all year, even dogged the shit out of the surface last year...

So with all the upgrades to Arrowhead, when will they switch to NextTurf and get rid of the painted grass and dirt?

chiefs1111 11-30-2009 11:38 PM

Hopefully sooner rather than later. They should have changed it a long time ago.

Titty Meat 11-30-2009 11:39 PM

The field looked like shit. The middle was a different color then the outside part and it just looks gross overall. Why dont they hire a new grounds crew? I don't remember Denvers field looking like shit or Green Bays.

ChiefsCountry 11-30-2009 11:41 PM

Need to go to a FieldTurf field. I would rather have grass but our weather and so Arrowhead can hold more events at the stadium, a FieldTurf field is the only way to go.

I am not sure? Shit if MU and KU can have really nice NextTurf fields, why does Arrowhead have to look like a worn out playground...

Not sure but Mayor Funkhauser will be at Arrowhead tommorow there trying to get the World Cup here in Kc.

A lot of MU fans (on the web, at least) don't care for Mike Kelly (MU radio guy). Personally, I like his professionalism and overall tone.

FloridaMan88 12-01-2009 12:32 AM

I was actually thinking about this while watching highlights of the MU/KU game... the field looks cheap and like shit. They need to install some sort of Fieldturf and they also need to dress up the dated green walls (that are varying shades of green) that surround the field.

EXCELLENT point. I ****ing HATE that green wall. It makes the field level background look like shit, and makes the stadium look like shit.

It's not like the only alternative is the carpeted concrete that was Astroturf.

He kept a gorgeous field over at the K, a real work of art.

Reerun_KC 12-01-2009 10:53 PM

Regardless. Arrowhead needs next turf, its time, past time to get updated....

Off topic, but I've been told by several old school, original fans that the wheels fell off the wagon when the team moved to Arrowhead.

Maybe the Sacred Cow is just a Sacred Cow Patty, and "addition by addition" is the way to right the Mojo.

I just assumed they wanted contrast for the camera with all the red going on, but the standard NFL angle pretty much renders that pointless.

Get rid of that ****ing eyesore.

I just assumed it was thing at that time, ie look at all the baseball stadiums with green walls. I'm suprised NFL teams haven't put ribbon boards in the endzone walls yet.

If that is the case then there probably won't be turf installed. Pro soccer players hate hate hate that stuff.

For what it's worth, I play soccer games weekly on FieldTurf and I don't see what the problem is. The surface actually feels softer/squishier than most grass fields. In fact, I think it is too squish. I feel like I'm running on sand. Also, it still gives you rugburn, unlike grass. There is no substitute for nice grass, but keeping that up in the winter (especially when it's wet and with multiple events) has to be a bitch.

OnTheWarpath15 12-02-2009 08:38 AM

Something needs to be done.

The current field can't even take the beating from 10 Chiefs games, much less the 2-3 college games it hosts every year, and the occasional soccer game.

"INTERCEPTED! And dropped."

"Tackled at the 30, forward progress to the 39."

"Tigers 3rd and 2 at the 40. Washington with the handoff, goes left, CUTS UP THE SIDELINE, moves forward and is tackled. ... It will be 4th and 2 at the 40."

I do like his "TO THE HOUSE!" calls.

Yeah at times he was very hard to follow... Hell at the end of the 3rd Qtr he was telling the listening folks that there was only 2:00 min left in the game, I was scratching my head trying to figure out WTF?

I don't think that happens as often as some would have you believe. I have heard the intercepted and dropped probably 3-4 times in my lifetime. I do get tired of "bellies back" though.

Soccer can go **** itself and stay the hell way from Arrowhead... Who gives a shit about that Euro sport anyway?

Gonzo 12-02-2009 09:54 AM

The turf was in decent shape at the start of the MU/KU game.

Unfortunately, the sod got torn up and muddy when all the KU players were laying on it and crying whilst yelling for their ****ing mommies...

(Ok, I'm done rubbing it in now, beakers. As you were.)

Silock 12-02-2009 09:55 AM

Real grass is so much better than any kind of turf.

That being said, if we aren't going to take care of the ****ing grass, then buy some damn turf.

FAX 12-02-2009 10:15 AM

I don't recall where I read this, but earlier in the year (or late last year?), a survey of NFL players gave very poor marks for Arrowhead's turf. Really poor marks. Last in the league, if memory serves. Basically, they equated playing at Arrowhead to playing on gravel and broken Boone's Farm bottles. The best surfaces (according to the players) were in Phoenix and Tampa - both of which are Bermuda grass, I think.

As a fan, I like natural turf. It's safer for our players and a good mud game is fun to watch from time to time.

You know, George Toma has repeatedly and publicly stated that he could take care of the Arrowhead field all by himself and would happily do so. I don't know if George is still alive, but if he is, Clark should buy him some seeds and a garden hose and let him at it.

GloryDayz 12-02-2009 10:26 AM

This can't be true. How is a 300 lb lineman digging his feet in to brace himself going to cause more turf damage than a 170lb man running across the surface?

Grass is better for knees. Even though they new turf is light years ahead of the old stuff, it's still lacking the same kind of "give" that natural grass offers.

I've been on some of that new turf and it seems pretty cushy to me.

Mizzou Dude 12-03-2009 12:44 PM

Always liked natural turf. It's like the last thing that's still old school about the NFL.

HypnotizedMonkey 12-03-2009 12:58 PM

The field does look like crap.

This sounds kinda outlandish, but it would be sweet to make a red turf similar to Boise St.'s blue turf. True sea of red. .. and change it back to green for soccer or whatever... i dunno if that's plausible. lol

Dayze 12-03-2009 01:10 PM

I like grass.
we might as well have one piece of old school left, since no one is allowed to tackle anymore.

DJ's left nut 12-03-2009 01:12 PM

C'mon, this isn't NASCAR. Or baseball. We play in the filth in this game.

Some of our best memories are of guys getting plowed into the grass and coming up with shit stuck all over them. Imagine how stupid the ol' Derrick Thomas in a puddle clip would look if he was sitting on some manicured green carpet. There's nothing better than driving a QB into the sod and seeing him have to pick that crap off him; to see a LB caked in slop because he's throwing himself around (and spot the pussy WR that won't get his jersey dirty).

Football is a dirty, nasty sport. Gimme my sod. I want a game or two every season played in miserable conditions. I like those 'mud' games when the team with the most grit pulls it out.

Might as well build a !@#$ing dome. Football is made for the elements and you children want to eliminate their impact in the name of having a pretty playing surface. It would be sacrilige to start playing it on a carpet because you like the pretty green color.

Brock 12-03-2009 01:14 PM

Let me be clear -- it's certainly worlds better than most grass around here, but the field turf is NOTHING compared to a well-manicured and maintained grass field. So, yeah, it's better than running on hard ground and hard grass, but if you've ever run and played on a really well-taken care of field... you'll see the difference.

I prefer the grass, but really don't care one way or the other too much as long as they start painting the entire endzone again like they used to. It looked so much better with the red endzone and yellow chiefs in it.
