The Zune software is confusing at first but after a couple hours it is one of the simplest tools you can use. Way easier than iTunes.

Holy shit, seriously? That isn't obvious at all. I had to go through a half dozen menus and select some folders and update my music collection and hit sync to get it to start transferring.

Basically I'm going to configure what I want on the Zune OUTSIDE the shitty software, put it all in one folder, show Zune where the **** it is and Sync that up. Then I'll be done with it.

Oh, and I failed to mention that now Zune decided it should be the default player for all the music on my computer.

All you have to do is set up the folders for it to monitor. Assuming you don't have your music spread out everywhere on your CPU, it's pretty simple.

I've been running the Zune software since it came out. You think it's a pain in the ass now? It used to be horrible.

The issue is A) I don't want ALL of the music on my computer on the Zune and B) I don't plan on the Zune "monitoring" shit.

The music on the software doesn't automatically go on the Zune. You choose which songs/albums/whatever you want to sync with the Zune. I have 60 gigs of music but only a 32gb player. I'm constantly swapping music.

Monitoring only refers to which folders the Zune pulls music from. Nothing else.

On a side note, you may consider the Zune Pass. It's $15 a month and it's all you can download. You get to keep 10 songs a month, so basically it's unlimited streaming for $5 a month, and you keep everything else as long as you pay for it. It helps me sleep at night now that I don't have to "illegally" download an album just to see if it's complete shit or not.

What a waste of time the Zune software is, then. I don't want the Zune software to manage my PC's music collection. It's only use to me is it's function as a file transfer application.

But they had to add layers of bullshit on top of that. Whee!

During the install you are asked if you want the Zune software to be your default player. Before you say it didn't... I know for a fact it does because I just installed it on my computer and I selected that it not be the default player.

Uninstall and re-install. This time, RTFM.

BTW, I found a registry hack that makes the Zune appear as a removable hard drive...so it appears I have found the solution. Hahahahaha!

dang OP you need to read what you allow and don't allow. Can't complain that Zune is the default, when the pop-up notification ask simply do you want to make zune the default yes or no. IDK, but if you have kids I'd tell them do it or no xbox or playstation lolz.

Actually, it appears the Zune software does NOT ask to be the default player upon installation. I just reinstalled it and was not presented with any option.

if it makes him feel any better, I get the option on the initial install only, even if I uninstall and reinstall after a reboot. Must write something into the registry.

Regardless, simply go into settings>file types> deselect all (by hand) and hit ok and zune is no longer your default.

For someone who spends a lot of time on the computer you sure do have a ton of difficulty with them.

There is nothing DURING THE INSTALL PROCESS that indicates it is going to change something unless you tell it not to.

didnt give you a hint that you might want to change something if you didn't want your defaults changed????

If you are a moron and click start playing, of course it will change your defaults... IT SAYS IT WILL.

BTW, the setup IS part of the install process. As of those screen shots, the system still asks me a few more questions and only THEN will the program start. The screenshots are from the launch screen.

Sorry if it didn't install correctly for you. I know whenever I wipe out my computer and start over, Zune asks me if I want it to be default and I say no every time. IT has never been a problem.

Jesus Christ. The Zune software completely ****ing sucks. I created a new folder and copied about 27 gigs of music into it. I made that my "music collection" and pointed the Zune toward it. I "sync'd" it all up and thought it would be good to go. Now it just STOPS after 12.3 GB? WHAT THE **** IS THAT SHIT?

I'm gonna get a Zune. I ****ING HATE IPOD'S and that mess of software Itunes bullshit that makes PC's run like ****ing garbage, and troubleshooting the sum bitches is a pain in the ass.

I think part of the reason the MS makes you use the Zune software rather than drag and drop using Explorer is that it needs to convert some files such as videos. I know when I have been putting videos on my Zune lately, it always goes through a conversion process so that my Zune can play the videos. My wife's Zen player is the same way.

Every time I have tried to have Zune convert my videos it has done a crappy job. I always have to use a 3rd party software to do it with.

I had a terrible time trying to do that. I finally gave up on it last December after trying for several days. It would always APPEAR to work. The movie would show up on my Zune software normally. It would go through the conversion transfer process, but I never could get it to actually show up on my Zune.

BTW, I think the Zune 30GB doesn't seem to do videos properly. I'm sure you could download them from the Zune marketplace and they would work fine. I don't have that problem with my Zune 80GB that I just got a couple weeks ago.

Anyway, I finally figured out the best way to do it for me. Once I used DVD Shrink and DVD decrypter, I created a movie project in Nero and exported it as Nero AV (or something like that - it lists it as a file for portable devices like a PSP).

iTunes might be the simplest program to use this side of WordPad... I think you might be doing something wrong.

Mine still works great. And it was a lot cheaper than the iPod. Got a 30GB for $65.

Get an Apple product. Evidently, they'll cure the world's ails. :)

Only problems I have with itunes is that you have to manually add your music to it and the fact that it doesn't detect duplicates automatically.

Other than that, nothing really wrong with it. I wish I could use it to add music to android phones.

Personally I find the Zune software much more intuitive and more visually pleasing. Along with the subscription service, it really makes me hate being tethered to itunes because of my phone.
