Prayer Request

Please keep my father-in-law in your thoughts and prayers if you can.

He was admitted to the hospital Monday because of breathing problems and they found he had atrial fibrillation (Afib) which means his heart was beating very fast. They got that stablized, but now his kidneys and liver are failing so they transferred him to another hospital (our small hospital does not have a specialist for this).

I know that KC Dan and Stevieray personally know and love Jose, so I wanted to get this out for them too.

UPDATES:

1/17/2010
My Father-in-law passed away yesterday afternoon.

My wife an I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers over the last few weeks. Please continue to pray for the comfort of my wife and her family during this difficult time.

The Afib is not an issue now. The kidney and liver failure are a HUGE concern.

HemiEd 12-16-2009 09:23 AM

Done Bob, hope things turn out better soon.

Sorry to hear it man. Thoughts and prayers out to him.

Dartgod 12-16-2009 10:16 PM

Thanks for all the thoughts.

They think he has a blood infection which is why the organs are failing. Right now they're bombarding him with antibiotics. He's stable, but in pretty bad shape. The next couple of days will be dicey.

Bob-Soph,
Please know that you both, Jose and your entire family have my prayers and support. If you need anything, please let me know. I am tremendously saddened to hear this horrid news. Now, China surely feels far away......
Tell Jose I said he HAS to get better as he is my post-Chiefs game breakfast partner.

As long as he doesn't get an additional hospital acquired infection he should weather the storm. PM me if you want some inside hospital info , what to look for etc.

Radar Chief 12-17-2009 10:03 AM

Wow, sorry to read that. Done deal on the prayers.

Dartgod 12-17-2009 03:45 PM

He's doing better today. Still in ICU, but he is producing urine now so the kidneys are functioning somewhat. As of last night we thought they were going to have to start dialysis soon. So that's an inprovement.

He looks better too. Face isn't as swollen and he isn't talking as much nonsense. He was asking me about what I thought about some football game last night. I asked him what game and all I could get from him was "mumble mumble mumble 1909 mumble mumble".

His blood work has not been good though. Lots of issues they have to work through there.

But he has improved somewhat since yesterday, so I appreciate all the prayers. Please keep them coming!

BIG_DADDY 12-17-2009 03:47 PM

Wow, this has been a really hard year for you guys. We will keep you in our prayers for sure.

Big step forward. Your kidneys quit on you, thats a big deal to overcome when you are already in a comprimised state. Lots of complications can and do ensue.

KC Dan 12-20-2009 08:28 AM

unfortunatey, I cannot call and ask you how Jose is from Toyama. Can you let me know how he is doing? I saw this fall without an update today and am wondering....

Dartgod 12-20-2009 09:20 AM

He's still in ICU. Yesterday was an improvement. His bloodwork improved some. He's still lucid when awake. Someone was talking about birthdays and he knew who several peoples birthdays were. I asked him if he knew when my birthday was and he looked at me and said, "The day of the great depression". We all cracked up.

Soph is there now and called me and said they think he has pneumonia now. So not good. It's still a day to day thing.

We appreciate all the good thoughts and prayers.

Dartgod 12-20-2009 09:22 AM

Could a mod resticky this? Not sure why it was dropped. A lack of updates I suppose.

Sorry to hear about that. thoughts and prayers.

Dartgod 12-21-2009 09:50 PM

Good news today. He's out of ICU and into a "step up" room. They monitor him a little more closely, but its basically a regular hospital room.

He's still weak and has a long way to go, but this is definitely good news.

Gracie Dean 12-21-2009 10:12 PM

That is good news, prayers his recovery continues.

KC Dan 12-22-2009 11:15 PM

Back in the States now and the first news I read is this - OUTSTANDING!!!

Dartgod 12-23-2009 06:39 AM

Glad you made it back safely Dan.

One thing I haven't mentioned is his left leg. He has poor circulation in his legs anyway due to smoking. Since he has been in the hospital, he has had no circulation below the knee in the left leg. They've known for a few days now that they need to amputate his leg because it is dying, but he is not strong enough for surgery. But his leg has gotten bad enough now that it will affect his overall health. Kind of a catch-22. So they have tentatively scheduled to amputate on Tuesday.

So yeah, he's out of ICU, but he still has some MAJOR health concerns.

King_Chief_Fan 12-23-2009 09:23 AM

We will continue to pray for him and your family.

Dartgod 12-23-2009 09:26 AM

Yikes! My wife just called and they are planning to take his leg today. If he is strong enough to survive the surgery, it will help him in his long term recovery.

Dartgod 12-23-2009 05:28 PM

The surgery went well. They had to take the leg above the knee, but it had to be done. Now a few more days in ICU and then on the road to recovery!

Thanks for all the prayers everyone. It means a lot to us. It really does.

RJ 12-23-2009 05:38 PM

Damn Dartgod, your family is having a hard time of late. Prayers for Mr. Jose, I hope he recovers from all this.

Glad it went well Bob. You, Sophie and Jose will continue to be in our prayers.

Dartgod 12-28-2009 07:53 AM

I haven't updated this in a while, so here's the latest.

He's recovering well from his surgery but still has some health issues to deal with. Latley he has been very withdrawn, doesn't talk much or eat well. We're concerned for his mental well-being. They are planning some physical therapy this week so maybe that will perk him up a bit.

He is not in any serious danger now though, so the mods can unsticky this if you like. I will bump it from time to time with updates.

Thanks again for all the thoughts and prayers.

yeah, after th shock wears off about surviving, the realization of how hard a recovery it will be sets in and depression takes over. Its a normal thing. Physical therapy and the family being positive are great tools to use to battle this. Also get him something he likes to do if possible. something to look forward to. Like myself, it would be something chiefs related. But on the other hand....maybe thats not a good idea this year.

Dartgod 12-30-2009 02:14 PM

Just got back from the hospital and he is doing much better. Sitting up, talking, eating and pretty coherent. He maybe moving to a rehab center within a week to start getting his strength back and learning to live with one leg.

Bugeater 12-30-2009 04:22 PM

Glad to hear things are going somewhat well. Bummer about the leg though, that has to be pretty rough to deal with.

Could I get this stickied again?

My FIL had been in rehab and was doing ok, but still pretty weak. We thought he might eventually get to come home, however.

This morning we got the dreaded call from the hospital. He is back in ICU, having breathing issues. His BP is very low and they probaby would need to put him on a ventilator to keep him alive...something that is against his wishes.

So right now the outlook is not good. I ask that you pray for his recovery and if he does not recover that he not suffer. Also prayers for my wife to help her through this would be appreciated.

I know that people don't want to be put on a vent to stay alive but if you have a hope that the underlying cause can be corrected and coming off the vent in the future that would not be against his wishes. If they can't get it corrected you can always take him off the machine and follow his wishes.

Positive thoughts heading your way.

big nasty kcnut 01-17-2010 10:21 AM

Done but if you can don't put him on the machine cause it can led to false hope when my grandma smith died she was on the machine and we were told that she doing better but then notice that she wasn't able to breath on her own anymore after two weeks.

That's what the doctors are saying now. If they put him on the ventilator, he may never be able to come off of it.
