Ravens backup QB Troy Smith requests trade

According to his agent Ralph Cindrich's Twitter account, backup QB Troy Smith has notified the Ravens that he wants to be traded.
Smith "wants playing time" Cindrich writes, and plans to "seek (a) trade" after the Ravens' playoff run. The timing here is hardly impeccable with just six days left before Baltimore attempts to clinch a postseason berth against the Raiders. Smith has rushed eight times for 38 yards and a touchdown this year, and completed 5-of-9 passes for 24 yards and an interception. Dec. 28 - 2:28 pm et

KCChiefsMan 12-28-2009 01:45 PM

ToxSocks 12-28-2009 01:47 PM

What an idiot. Kiss your NFL career goodbye, kid.

Why do these players think they are entitled to something?

Sure-Oz 12-28-2009 01:50 PM

Not that this is related but similiar....

Ronde Barber-DB-Buccaneers Dec. 28 - 2:38 pm et

In an interview with Pewter Report, CB Ronde Barber threatened to retire if the Bucs do not retain head coach Raheem Morris.
"Absolutely it will," Barber said when discussing the impact Morris' status has on his future. Morris has led his team to a 3-12 record, and there is talk that Tampa Bay will target Bill Cowher as his replacement. Barber turns 35 in the offseason. He has 75 tackles, but zero interceptions on the year.

LMAO

He was really good in preseason last year and was supposed to go into the season as a starter but had a really bad illness that kept him off the field.

Terrible timing on his part though.

mylittlepony 12-28-2009 01:54 PM

I dont think he is all that bad. The guy's biggest flaw coming out in the draft was his height. I think from pre-season (where le looked good) and his few appearances that he has shown that his ability to read the defence makes up for that. I dont think he has had a pass batted down or had to flee the pocket because he couldnt see his receivers. However if he thinks he should be a starter in the NFL he needs to get his head checked. He could be very good for a canadian team perhaps. I'd have a look at him only if he was interested in moving from qb3 to qb2 because thats where he will end up AT BEST. I'm actually higher on him now then when he came out of ohio.

What they said about him (thank you cached google search :))

Positives:

Smith is a kid who's turning a lot of heads these past two years. He's gone from “who's that?” starter in mid 2004, to a breakout player in 2005, to the Heismann favorite leading the nation's No. 1 team (as of this writing). Troy has been gifted with a big arm, arguably the strongest in the draft, as well as very quick feet and great overall athleticism.
His field vision and ability to read coverages is also far superior to what you'd normally expect from an athletic-mold QB, especially in the college ranks. He also possesses a very quick feel for pressure, and can ably use his legs to get away from it and create plays.
Negatives:

As athletically gifted as Smith is, he is rather small for a QB, with some reports of his height being as low as 5' 11”, although his generally accepted height is the still rather short 6' 1”. His lean frame won't lend him well to the sheer pounding of the NFL. Another concern is his accuracy; one cannot help but notice his receivers adjust and even abandon routes to get to one of many balls that he throws off-target.
Also, in his year and a half of starting prior to the 2006 season, Smith had a tendency to take off and run a bit more often than you like to see for an NFL prospect. While he has cut down on that dramatically in 2006, it's still something to keep in the back of your mind, as there have been a number of occasions where Smith starts to make that break, then changes his mind and hauls off a pass.
Overview:

Troy Smith is a bit of an oddity as a draft prospect. On one hand, he seems very polished, picking apart defenses and making a name for himself. On the other, he seems very raw, with an occasionally wild arm, and periodic strange decisions. However, with his strong play and significant exposure, expect several teams to look at him high in the draft, as he looks like he could almost be in a John Elway type of mold. The fact that it's a very shallow-looking draft pool at QB should help his case considerably as well.

CoMoChief 12-28-2009 01:58 PM

He's actually played well when given the chance from what I've seen.

Better than Cassel FWIW.

wild1 12-28-2009 02:00 PM

I'm surprised he is still in the league actually

I don't fault him for wanting to play. He's not going to get past Flacco. Bad timing, though. Seems like his agent is the one that let it get out there.

Bane 12-28-2009 02:24 PM

Troy Smith = QB FAIL.

Thig Lyfe 12-28-2009 02:28 PM

Let's give him $60 mil.

suds79 12-28-2009 02:31 PM

Apparently Troy Smith is forgetting he's Troy Smith. a la - Career backup at best.

He's in for a rude awaking this offseason when he finds his options are either:

A - Still be a backup

B - Go play in the CFL or something like that.

Yep on all of this. He is actually a pretty gifted QB, he is very very accurate and really elusive in the pocket. He will be a starter somewhere, he has a lot of talent, is he was about 4 inches taller he would have been a high first round pick. I hope he get's a shot somewhere, but yeah his timing was terrible on this.
