Chiefs tried to trade Charles
http://kan.scout.com/2/934713.html
With Texas headed for a National Championship showdown with Alabama, two former Longhorns now playing for the Chiefs performed as if they were back in college and dominating inferior competition Sunday afternoon. Jamaal Charles and Derrick Johnson ended the Broncos’ playoff hopes and opened positive floodgates for the 2010 Chiefs during a 44-24 win in Denver. If you had told me before this game that Matt Cassel would only throw for 207 yards, Dwayne Bowe and Charles would catch only one pass combined and Kyle "Pro Bowl" Orton would throw for 431 yards, I’d have sworn the Chiefs would have lost on Sunday to end their miserable 2009 season. Instead, they played their best football game of the season. With Charles setting a Chiefs’ single-game rushing record with 259 yards and Johnson scoring two touchdowns off interception returns, have we seen the birth of the new Chiefs? Did we just witness the genesis of the team we’ll see next season? It won’t hurt if both Texas standouts are on the roster come September. Charles is a lock, but Johnson is a free agent and has not been a happy camper in Kansas City since Haley arrived with his in-your-face coaching style. Charles’ big day almost didn’t happen. Before the trade deadline in October, Chiefs’ general manager Scott Pioli offered Charles to the Redskins for a paltry fifth-round pick. But Washington GM Vinny Cerrato felt that was too high a price to pay for a backup running back. That might be why Cerrato was fired last month. The Chiefs held onto Charles and he has paid huge dividends. A year ago, former Chiefs Vice President of Player Personnel Bill Kuharich told me Charles was going to be a special running back, and that’s why he pushed former GM Carl Peterson to draft him in the third round. Charles is clearly the go-to back in Kansas City based on his second-half performance this season. Kansas City now has the luxury of pursuing other needs on offense in free agency and the draft. Johnson, even though he was primarily used in passing situations, clearly has still been KC’s best inside linebacker all season long. The Chiefs now need to make a strong play to keep him, because he’s talented enough that he’ll go somewhere else and succeed. Charles and Johnson weren’t the only bright spots Sunday. Early, it became clear that the Chiefs were ready to play from the opening snap. The first play on offense was a 50-yard bomb to little-used wide receiver Terrance Copper, sending a message to the Broncos that the Chiefs weren’t going to lie down. The Chiefs kept punching the Broncos in the mouth until they delivered the knockout punch – Charles’ 52-yard touchdown gallop - that eliminated Denver from the playoff race. Just for that, this game has special meaning. Chiefs fans can live the entire offseason knowing their team ended the season of an AFC West Rival that started 6-0. While New York's win Sunday night also would have eliminated the Broncos, the Chiefs had the pleasure of taking away Denver's hope early. Who’s the better coach now? Todd Haley or Josh McDaniels? We’ll have plenty of time to debate that this offseason. Haley showed something Sunday and will get another season to turn the ship around in Kansas City. We should have no problem with that, especially if the reports are accurate that Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis will soon be taking over KC’s offense and defense. Crennel and Weis would give Haley two former head coaches to bounce ideas off, and that could be enough to make a huge difference next season. This season was full of bitter disappointment for the Chiefs and for the most part it was a negative year that warranted harsh criticism. But Monday morning, that doesn’t matter. The Chiefs are undefeated in 2010. Now we wait nine months for the next game. |
Ouch.

Holy.
****ing. Christ. |
Pioli must die
|
Game changer?
|
Funny that this was just now written, if this actually happened. This reeks of bullshit.
|
OMG!
|
Before I comment on this development, I'm gonna need some 1st and 2nd confirmation on the claim.
|
firescottpioli.com ?
It'll happen. |
Okay gang,
|
LOL DJ isn't going anywhere if the chiefs want to pay him what 1.5 million for the 1st and 3rd RFA tender?
|
Afterwards, Charles was offered to Detroit for a 6th rounder and a bag of potatoes, but Al Saunders turned it down.
|
Oh
Athan pfft |
Is this from the Erroneous One?
|
No ****ing way
|
Was this article written the same day Wipe said the Chiefs were hiring Shannahan?

Because you can't imagine Pioli doing something so stupid, or because Nick wrote it? There's no doubt in my mind it happened, and that someone in the Redskins organization is the source. God knows Pioli didn't admit to it. |
WPI reported it so it must be true....
|
Sure they did...

if i remember right before the trade deadline we really struggled, and pioli said everyone is on the block that isnt named matt cassel. we had no takers, DJ dorsey and bowe were all on the block as well and nobody gave a sh*t.

There's no doubt in your mind? I think it reeks of bullshit because it is a shock article written months after the supposed event, and right after JC breaks the Chiefs' rushing record. Why wouldn't this have come out sooner if it happened. Is this just some coincidence that this guy who has written so many bullshit shock pieces somehow got this information right on this one? |
This is separating the wheat from the chaf
|
So we could get more than a 5th for him now, right? Win!
|
Until I see it on Wikipedia I'm not believing it.
|
This is BS. It would have been news and NO ONE remembers it. I distinctly remember talk about Dorsey, DJ and Bowe.
This is another attempt to make Pioli look bad. Very transparent. |
WIPE is the Faux News of Chiefs journalism

I'm not willing to dismiss it just because Nick wrote it, unlike most here. Sounds perfectly believable given the circumstances, but people don't want to admit a potential Pioli ****-up. |

It wouldnt surprise me but i in no way will believe this till we get more sources.
|
Yikes! Could it be: Peterson > Pioli

It obviously would've been a stupid move in retrospect, but many moves are. We almost traded Larry Johnson away to Miami for Arturo Freeman before he ever did anything for this team. If any of the other GM's thought Charles was going to become what he was, they would've jumped on the chance to trade a 5th for him. Just like they would've signed Priest when he was out there floating around... or drafted LJ instead of letting him slip to the end of the 1st. |

If this really happened then surely WIPI premium subscribers should be screaming that they've known about it for months through their affiliation with the greatest Chiefs insider connection in the world.
|
I believe nothing Athan says, ever.

A year ago, you would have called this article the bullshit it is. Now, "there is no doubt in your mind this happened." |
ATHAN......
NO. |
I don't see how Pioli could even fathom the thought since LJ had a paltry 2.7 ypc avg at the time. October was when LJ twitted his BS as well. Seems unlikely but stupid if true. :spock:

And why after such a big win? Since when does WPI go out of there way to make the organization look bad? Usually, they are kissing their ass. |

Going into that period, Charles had been inactive a couple times and fumbled that kickoff...it was pretty obvious the Chiefs brass didn't think much of him, they refused to play him over LJ.
|
Need more proof if it did happen, but if so, holy mother ****ing shit pioli. Charles is dat dude that makes dudes on other teams fear dat dude. He is a dirty little mother****er.
|
Look at the time frame, it makes a lot of sense Jamaal Charles was in the total doghouse then, he wasn't even dressing for games.
|
They got the word out that everyone was offered in trades as motivation to get their asses in gear. They actually traded away the scrubs (Thigpen, Tyler) and kept the talented guys. No one in this organization was just going to trade away playmakers like Bowe, Charles, and DJ for nothing.
If this really did happen, you probably would have heard about it a lot sooner than today, and from a more credible source... |
Quote:
When people like Glazer, among others report that the entire roster sans Cassel is on the trade block leading up to the deadline, it makes it more than believable. |
50 posts in 18 minutes... wow.
|
So I guess the question is...who do you hate more, Pioli or Athan?
Decisions, decisions. |

I don't know if it's true or not. But even if it is true, that means the ENTIRE NFL thought Pioli was nuts for asking a 5th. That's how the NFL rolls. Stuff like this happens.

Ponder that. |

I also don't think any GM in this league is going to trade their #2 halfback for a 5th round pick. |

You guys should come over to WPI, we could use this traffic.

Rumor has it the Chiefs also tried to send Bowe and Dorsey to the Patriots for the rights to talk Teddy Bruschi out of retirement. To learn more, send me $89.99 in casino cash.

My first reaction is to ask why in the hell this info. didn't come out earlier, but, to play devil's advocate, it's not the focus of the article.
Naturally, it's the most salacious detail for us, but, still... That said, I'd like some confirmation of this. |

This has nothing to do with Nick. And FWIW, I don't have an anti-Pioli agenda - the few times he's done something I've agreed with, I've given him his due respect. I've said countless times that I hope to hell I have to eat a huge, steaming plate of crow because the guy brings a Championship here. |
I am worried that this front office is seriously gonna **** up this team. Where would we be if charles was traded to the Redskins for a 5th?
|
No offense, but all you crazy "draftaurians" or "draftites" or "draft queens"... whatever the group's name is... have gone off the deep end if you're going to start slinging Athan's crap around this place without a 2nd source to back it up.

Back in October the Chiefs didn't look like they thought much of Charles. |
