Sources: Seahawks hire USC's Carroll

Pete Carroll has reached agreement with the Seahawks on a deal to be their next head coach, multiple NFL sources confirmed early Saturday morning.

Carroll was fully expected to be introduced by the Seahawks as early as Monday, assuming they comply with the Rooney Rule this weekend.

The hangup could be locating a candidate to interview that would put the Seahawks in compliance with the rule, which requires teams to interview a minority candidate for head-coaching hires.

On Friday, Jim Mora became the first Seahawks coach to be let go after one season.

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier could agree to interview, but he is unwilling to do so if Carroll has been promised full control of the Seahawks -- and multiple sources say he has.

Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke told Frazier that Carroll definitely does not have Seattle's job.

Report: Carroll agrees to coach Seahawks

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 9, 2010 8:53 AM ET
Pete Carroll leaving USC to coach the Seattle Seahawks appears to be a done deal.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Carroll has agreed on a deal to take the job. According to Schefter, the only hangup is that the Seahawks can't make the hiring official until they comply with the Rooney Rule by interviewing a minority candidate.

Of course, at this point, if the Seahawks do interview a minority candidate solely to comply with the Rooney Rule, they would be making a complete mockery of the Rooney Rule.

Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has reportedly decided to sit for an interview after being assured that Carroll doesn't have the job yet. Perhaps after reading Schefter's report, Frazier will change his mind.

The NFL network had a show on the other day called Top 10 Coaches who were made for College" or something like that. Carroll was on the list. He's had 2 stints as a HC in the NFL I thought, Jets and then later NE. But he never really did shit as a HC in the NFL. Should be interesting...

Kyle DeLexus 01-09-2010 09:44 AM

The anti-Mecca crowd are going to have a field day today. First Carroll, and then Earl Thomas declared.

The Bad Guy 01-09-2010 09:45 AM

Pat Kirwin is apparently going to be the GM in Seattle. Him and Carroll have worked together in the past. Pat will handle the cap and business end, PC will handle the roster.

I think Carroll could do a great job in the NFL if he's given a young team to develop.

milkman 01-09-2010 09:54 AM

I also think that Leslie Frazier is getting screwed.

If and when he gets the chance to be a HC somewhere, I think he'll do hell of a job.

He and Ron Rivera were my favorite choices to take over the Chiefs last year.

USC recruits can't get assistant coaches on the phone

Posted by Mike Florio on January 9, 2010 11:28 AM ET
With all reports pointing toward USC coach Pete Carroll leaving the Trojans and joining the Seahawks, here's the most tangible piece of evidence suggesting that something is amiss.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, USC's recruits have been trying unsuccessfully to reach the school's assistant coaches.

Other schools already have begun contacting players like receiver Kyle Prater and running back Dillon Baxter, who made a verbal commitment (i.e., a non-commitment) to the Trojans as a freshman and has not considered alternative landing spots.

In this regard, keep in mind that even the players who have played the baseball cap version of the shell game are not bound until they sign a letter of intent in early February. Thus, any players who had planned to go to USC can go elsewhere.

Likewise, USC's new coach will be able to pursue players who have already given verbal commitments to other programs.

filling the USC job is going to be about as hard as filing the ND job. it wont take long, but glad to see carroll come to the NFL, i am kinda surprised he chose this year to do it

CoMoChief 01-09-2010 11:47 AM

1. USC isn't in a position to win a National Title soon. They're always going to be good. But they're not National Title good.
2. Ongoing investigations with possible NCAA recruiting violations also may come about thus making it harder to accomplish the above.
3. The Seattle front office guys from what I've been told are USC guys and would let Carroll control all football operations, just like what he does now at the college level. You don't see much of that in the NFL.

Finding a new coach will be hampered by the oncoming sanctions. Until they know how bad they'll be some coaches might be a bit reluctant.

Mr. Flopnuts 01-09-2010 11:59 AM

Looks like Tod Lieweike (sic) is in Minnesota and has gotten Leslie Frazier to agree to an interview so they can comply with the Rooney rule. The deal is done.

I think Herm would be an outstanding college coach, particularly in CA. I've said numerous times that UCLA would be an ideal fit for him.

If he went to USC with the understanding that he'll get elite athletes and he needs to let them actually play and use their abilities rather than curtail their gifts to some stupid ****ing scheme, he'll be VERY successful.

The problem for Herman ****ing Edwards, at any level, is that in close games against big time competition, his conservative approah will cost his team games, and thus shots at national titles, or even conference titles.

That approach must totally go out the window, and this is what I was getting at with respect to the elite type of players he will get.

When he was with the Chiefs, I remember an interview he gave in which he talked about franchise QBs. He said (paraphrasing), "When you have a Peyton Manning, you give him the ball and tell him to go win the game."

If this was more than empty rhetoric, he'll do fine at USC, since he'll have Manning-type talent at the college ranks.

He's going to come into a kid's living room, talking about the league, all of his connections, players he's coached, playoff victories, and tell that kid that he understands what it takes for him to get there and succeed. It could be a pretty powerful presentation.

Also, Herm is a good guy, and parents will respond well to him.

Herm would be an outstanding recruiter. There's little question about that, IMO.

As long as he hired high-quality coordinators and allowed them to do their jobs, especially the OC, who would need to employ an aggressive philosophy with the type of talent he'd have at his disposal, Herm would be an outstanding hire for USC.

What high-quality coordinators has Herm ever surrounded himself with? Herm isn't going to get his NFL coaches to go to college and make half of what they would in the NFL.

He's also never had a coordinator with an aggressive approach.

What you are essentially saying is that he needs to be a completely different coach than he's show in the pros. Despite his infomerical like salesman persona, he's not getting the same recruits Pete did.

He's expected in Seattle on Monday to be named Seahawks coach and sign a five-year, $32.5 million contract. Citing sources, the Daily News also reports that Jack Del Rio "is interested" in the USC job. Del Rio will meet with Jags owner Wayne Weaver this week, and is a strong candidate to be fired.
