I have made my decision..

I have made the decision to go ahead and have my surgery. It will be having it in February. I have already been cleared for it. I am going to use my tax check to pay up my bills. I am nervous.

Has anyone on here had decompression surgery on the L5 and S1? I would like to know what its like when you go home and how well it releived your pain. Or if you had problems after surgery that ended up making you regret having it to start with.

Input will be helpful as I am very scared.

Thanks,
Gloria

Sounds like it would be a better idea to ask a full range of questions to a doctor instead of getting advice from Redrum on ChiefsPlanet.

Just me though.

I'll buy your pain-pills.

Chopping your penis off is kind of extreme, but if it makes you feel better..

TigerPig 01-14-2010 10:54 PM

You should get a boob job while getting the spinal decompression.

I had back surgery in March 2008- it got rid of my sciatica, but I still have back pain. I need to know more about the decompression and wonder if I'm a candidate for it.

Depends on what's causing your back pain. I had it done, and it helped. Didn't cure it, but made it much better. Pain eventually went away. It's expensive as hell, or at least it was when they first started doing it a few years ago.

EDIT: I'm talking about the decompression table. Sorry, I think of decompression, and that's what comes to mind.

My disc has already ruptured, actually my leg and foot hurt more than my back. It is compressing a nerve root on the right side. He said he would be removing part of the bone and replacing it with either a bone out of my hip or a cadaver bone,I chose the cadaver bone. I think there are other forms of decompression without the surgery.

Sounds precisely like what I had, and that is sciatica. The nerve running down the spine was compressed so that only the right side of my leg was experiencing a sharp pain- a constant freakin' pain that kept me awake and cursing at old ladies and unsuspecting strangers.

So glad I don't have sciatica...I still have back pain, but I'll take that any day over sciatica.

Yea I would rather deal with back pain than this burning at times, then my toes feel like they are numb and red ants eating on the bottom of my feet. There are times when I get out of the jeep after working in the mornings that I can barely walk. Back pain, yea I can deal with it, this leg and foot pain is whats causing me to be almost disabled.

I know your pain. When I had sciatica, I was working 8-5 at my job during that time. During rush hour traffic I was literally screaming and crying because the sciatica was making it so unbearable. There were a lot of mornings I had to put my right leg up on the dashboard of the car to close off the nerve, even if just for a few minutes- which seemed like a moment in heaven when I did.

Gloria, I hope this works for you...you are most certainly in my prayers. I know how it feels and I pray, pray, pray and wish you the best and most successful of surgeries.

Of all the stuff they gave me, I like percocet and norflex the most. I loved oxycontin at first, but it turned itself against me.

As a recreational drug user, I can say that Oxycontin is by far the most beautiful thing on the face of the earth. I did it a lot as a younger pup. I stopped because it was too good.

After being higher than a motherfucker for 8 hours straight, everything else kind of loses its wow factor. I can TOTALLY see how people get addicted because even now to this day there is nothing in the world that compares to that feeling.

Percocet is the same feeling except not as intense or long lasting. When I take Oxy, though, I start crying because I'm so happy, and writing poetry about how beautiful the world is. This is not an exaggeration. Its about the only time in my life where I didn't give a flying fuck about getting laid (cause it felt like I just did, lol).

Mr. Kotter 01-14-2010 11:58 PM

I had C5 and C6 fused with a metal plate, screws and rods, about 7-8 yrs ago. I was reluctant too...

It's been one of the best things I've done. I lost about 10% of range of motion rotating my neck...but other than that, it "fixed" the pain and was otherwise uneventful. Recovery for me was....relax, lay low for a week or so; after that, it was a piece of cake. Drugs were fine, good; percocet too. Just back off of it when you can; the sooner, the better.

Best wishes. I'll add you to our thoughts and prayers.

Oh, I've had Oxy too. It didn't do anything like that to me, but it did make me have really vivid dreams.

TigerPig 01-15-2010 12:05 AM

To actually post something on topic, MAKE SURE to do your physical therapy. I've seen people who's legs and arms completely freeze up and never truly move again because they thought they were done once they got the surgery. The surgery is the first step, and the easy part. After that BLOWS. You'll be forced to do a lot of exercises, none of them should cause you pain, but you will be sorer than a motherfucker the next day. You will not want to go to PT, you will think where you're at is sufficient enough. You are wrong. Keep going, be a super trooper, and KEEP GOING TO THERAPY!

Well, I can attest to that as I mentioned earlier. Oxy does rock. But, like all intoxicants, it does come with its fallbacks. I have a friend of mine who's a pharmacist and he said, quote, "that sh*t ****s up your brain's mechanisms..."

I had already decided if the dr.wanted to take me to OC's I will refuse. They are 2 addictive and there seems to be a lot of deaths related to OC's more than other pain meds that I have heard of.

The way i get relief sometimes is to lay on my stomach and pull my right leg up far as I can, it helps for a while then starts back. If I am having a really bad night, my leg starts to spasm kinda jerks and I can't control it.

That works too. I never had the spasms though- just an unforgivable piercing pain that wouldn't go away.

I still recall the morning, long before I had surgery, when I stormed into my doctor's office and told him he had my permission to sever my right leg right then and there. I couldn't take it anymore and I was that desperate. Obviously he suggested pain killers and surgery and I took the pain killers route first, and then the surgery.

Keep in mind its not just oxycontin. They will probably not give them to you but there are a few others that are worse. Just PLEASE don't put anything into your body you don't know about first (this goes for more than just drugs).

I have said that exact thing!! I really have, before they checked my back they was saying it was neuropathy. I went to the dr once and told him just to amputate my leg I would rather have it gone than to live with this much pain. I understand where you're coming from with that statement. The pain is terrible, but the burn is sickening.

It is terrible, but it will go away with the surgery and you will be dancing on sunshine again.

They ****ed up during my surgery and I had to go back to have the spinal fluid drained. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you. Having them stick a giant needle in your back is no picnic, but it's still better than that sciatica.

Let me know how it goes. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

He mentioned something, he said "where this has been sitting on here so long, when I lift if up it may leak and I may have to put a couple of stiches in and you will have a excruitating headache for about 2 days.

I can't respond to that because your back issue is likely different than what I had and of course, I haven't seen the scans or xrays or anything. Those scans used to freak me out...ugghhh. I swear I didn't think I had any fears until they put me in one of those things for a half hour.

It sounds like you are experiencing the same sciatic nerve issue I had, but that can be caused by the compression on the nerve in any level of your spine such as the 5th lumbar as you stated. And it's the precise location that matters the most in your healing.

Give me a call when you get a chance.

One of the best things you can do to make your recovery faster and help insure you get the desired result from the surgery is the physical therapy. You should ask your Doc if there is anything you can do before the surgery that would help.
Whatever it is they tell you to do MAKE SURE YOU DO IT.

I know you Gloria and I know how you can be. Boy do I know how you can be. If YOU don't think whatever it is they tell you to do makes sense then you won't do it. This is one time you'll need to do what you're told.

LOL....why the heck would you not be able to use your hands??...they aren't severing your spine..

I had microdiscectomy Oct 13th 2009 for a herniated disc L5-S1. Prior to surgery I could not move. i was trapped laying on my stomach on a bed for 9 weeks in sheer agony. I still am on lift restrictions and taking some percocet and flexeril for back pain and stiffness but the horrible pain down my leg is 99% gone. My next step is a few physical therapy sessions and should be back to near normal. Just remember you will never have a 100% healthy back. Learn correct lifting techniques and be careful.

I'll need verification with pics and a graphic description of both her and your genitals. Also I will need this in MLA format.

Yea we never made it to dry off we usually started playing around and slinging pillows and they usually bust open and the feather stick to our wet skin. We just rub them off each other and laugh.

That's what I thought, that shit always gets the ladies. Sadly enough, I occasionally talk to women like this in real life...they love it! :shake: *hangs head in shame*

No orgy, just a formal request to see some random woman on the internet (and her roommate)'s genitals. And my formal request was denied.

I swear to god I don't get how there can be tens of thousands of women who will post themselves naked on the internet, and sometimes doing hot, obscene stuff, yet its NEVER someone you know. Where the hell are these bitches?

I don't get women.

I'll be alright whenever I find some of the women from the, "Is She Filthy" thread. Except for #1000.

I think it has something to do with living in Arkansas. As soon as I graduate, I swear to Jesus Christ I'm moving to Phoenix or LA, or someplace out west.

My Mecca is Scandinavia. But I don't know Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, or Icelandic...

So do YOU know any women who have pictures on the internet? I'm not being a perv or asking for them or some dumb shit like that. I'm just trying to find ONE fuckING person who knows these women. I mean, they have to be from somewhere!

Has anyone on here had decompression surgery on the L5 and S1? I would like to know what its like when you go home and how well it releived your pain. Or if you had problems after surgery that ended up making you regret having it to start with.

Input will be helpful as I am very scared.

Thanks,
Gloria

OK! gl

By the way badgirl, or Gloria, you're going to be fine. I know you're scared as hell, its freakier than shit to have someone move around the nerves in your spine. But these guys have been in college 4 years, med school 4 years, and have seven years of neurosurgery before they even get to be on their own. And that would be if you had a doctor who was brand new. He probably has 20 years of experience under his belt, easy! They're superhuman in their skill.

The surgery will be the easy part, the recovery will hurt like hell. When you first get out you're going to be in a world of hurt, but they'll give you good meds to balance out. Then you're going to have to do exercises to strengthen back those stabilizers in your torso. Your Pelvic Floor muscles (believe it or not, the muscles people use to "flex" their genitals are very important to core stability, lol) and transverse abdominus (the muscle that pulls in your belly) will need lots of strengthening to get back to pre-surgery form. And you will be sore. You will be pissed you have to do it some days, but you will have no choice but to just go with it. And within a few months of getting this surgery you will be kicking yourself in the ass repeatedly for having not done it as soon as the pain started. Cause after a few months you'll feel great! You'll be able to sleep through the night without waking up sorer than a motherfucker. You'll be able to sit and/or stand in one position for a long period of time, and all sorts of great stuff! You'll literally be happier cause the pain won't be there, and you'll feel better physically just from the pain relief, not to mention the better rest you'll get from it.

When I was having my back problems, my doctor told me that the pain in my leg and foot would go away, but I would probably always have some kind of back pain. Someone who had it said the same thing in this thread earlier. Maybe she'll be the exception though. Who knows.

Soreness and pain are separate. The nerve pain should go away. She might have a sore back because of the surgery, but I have a feeling this will pale in comparison to what she is feeling, which is what I was trying to say. She said the most of the pain is in her leg and foot, so that's a good sign cause that's the stuff that can be fixed.

Besides, I'm trying to beeeee positive here!
