Rosters For East-West Shrine Game
January 16, 2010 - Bob Gretz New Chiefs defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is in Orlando for the next week, as he’ll handle the East Squad in the annual East-West Shrine Game. He can learn a great deal about his new home if he talks with the coach of the West Squad, former Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer. The game will go off next Saturday at 2 p.m. CST from the Citrus Bowl. Practices start on Monday in Florida. They’ve been playing the Shrine Game for a long time, but it has fallen behind the Senior Bowl in importance for NFL evaluators. That makes the two rosters not nearly as strong as what will be seen in the week after in Mobile. Right now, there are no players in this game that grade out to first-round status. The closest are Nebraska SS Larry Asante and Mississippi DE Greg Hardy, who are both considered second round talents. There are three players considered third round prospects in the game: TE Dennis Pitta of BYU, FS Kam Chancellor of Virginia Tech and OT Kyle Calloway of Iowa. There are three KU players in this game: QB Todd Reesing, WR Kerry Meier and SS Darrell Stuckey. See full rosters here: http://www.bobgretz.com/chiefs-footb...tml#more-12330 |
Larry Asante a 2nd round pick? Yea riiiiiight.
|
Well, at least Crennel will get a good look at some mod to late round prospects.
|
What round for Stuckey?

It is too bad that the Shrine game has diminished as it has. It used to be a big game played at Stanford and the money all goes to the Shriner's Hospital to benefit sick kids. Too bad it has lost its luster. They had to move it east as it was dying in the Bay Area.

I see him as a 3rd, hell maybe 4th. |

I personally think he'd be a solid selection in round 3, since we're going to pass on Berry at the top. |

I can see him falling into the fourth. |
I enjoy watching the East-West Shrine game to see some of the diamonds in the rough that might be drafted in the 5th, 6th, 7th, or signed as college free agents. Last year OT SeaBass Vollmer really looked good in the game and practice.
This year I want to watch WR Freddie Barnes (6), OT Kyle Calloway (3), RB Andre Dixon (FA), G Howard Cord (FA), G Sergio Render (4), FS Kam Chancellor (3), and NT Torell Troup (7) on the East team. The West team has OT Zane Beadles (4), SS Darrell Stuckey (4), and NT Ekom Udofia (7) to watch. |
ANDRE DIXON/RB/UCONN/6-1/205
Two years ago this young man was a Sophomore sensation with almost 900 yards rushing for the Huskies. In 2008 he all but disappeared after some issues with his coaches and the emergence of DONALD BROWN. After a slow start to the 2009 season he picked up the slack and gained over 1,000 yards, while scoring 14 TD. He continued to display his slashing, dashing running style in the somewhat surprising UCONN win over South Carolina. He gained well over 100-yards against the normally stingy Gamecocks D. He is a gliding runner who shows very good balance, and enough speed to outrun anyone in the defensive front seven. He looks like he could be a solid second RB in the NFL. He will be watched closely in the Shrine Game and at the COMBINE. He has a chance to be a solid mid-Round Draft Choice. http://www.pigskinpaul.com/Pigskin_P...ht_My_Eye.html |
CORD HOWARD/OG/GEORGIA TECH/6-4/305
It can be tough at times to judge pro potential along the OL in an option running Offense like PAUL JOHNSON employs at TECH. But after seeing HOWARD's name show up on the SHRINE roster I decided to give him the eyeball test in the Orange Bowl. I came away very impressed with his athleticism. He showed very good feet, exhibiting the ability to pull and also get to his second level blocks. He also appeared to be very aware of what was going on around him. On several occasions when plays either broke down, or were extended, CORD was able to locate IOWA defenders and make freelance blocks after his initial assignments were complete. He looked athletic enough to me to even be able to handle chores at RT in a pinch. He has nice size and body tone. He may need to pack another 10 lbs. of muscle on his body. He looks athletic enough to do well in a Zone Blocking scheme with a little extra coaching. Same site |
#7FREDDIE BARNES/WR/BOWLING GREEN/6-0/210
The MAC seems to making strides every season in elevating itself from the old label of Mid-Major when it comes to College Football. There could be a significant number of skill position players Drafted from its ranks next April. MR. BANKS would qualify as an explosive guy with nice soft hands the ability to get significant YAC once he collects the throw. I was very impressed with his play against Akron last week. He grabbed 12 balls for 197 yds and 2 TD. But he also caught my eye with some very aggressive downfield blocking on running plays and for his fellow receivers. He's not a burner, with perhaps just above-average speed, but is a solid route runner and is very dangerous after the catch because of his strength and quick-cut ability. He has 129 catches with one game left this season. From what I saw, this guy has to be a 3rd or 4th Round Pick in the 2010 DRAFT. http://www.pigskinpaul.com/Pigskin_P...ht_My_Eye.html |

Mays Thomas Allen Chancellor? |
Freddie Barnes looks like a good WR but he was playing aginst shitty talent. He isn't going to out run the Cromarties of the world like he did in the MAC confrence.

I'm just looking at most of these guys where they would be drafted with low round draft picks or signed as college free agents.
But Freddie Barnes really stood out in the Humanitarian Bowl this year, 17 catches, 219 yards, and 3 TDs. I wanted to see what he does in the Shrine Bowl. |
BTW Asante switched to the Senior Bowl.

Barnes would be a great pick in the 5th round or later. He profiles as an excellent possession receiver. He runs very crisp routes, and he has among the best hands in college football. He's Bobby Engram with another 15 pounds, IMO. |
Chad Jones is a lock to be picked ahead of Stuckey, Reshad Jones probably will because he'll test well in workouts.
Kam Chancellor is probably going to be the one that falls, he's very tall and very thinish. Chancellor is another guy that if he's really 6'4 he's going to get hit with that "no safety this tall has ever succeeded". |

(12:01 AM): Withdrawal deadline on tap … Underclassmen who filed paperwork with the NFL for entry to the 2010 draft have until 4 PM ET to withdraw their applications if they have not yet signed with an agent. Shrine week kicks off … The first of the three ‘big’ post-season college games gets underway later today in Orlando with the player weigh-ins for the East-West Shrine game. And while the Shine game tends to play second fiddle to next week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, this year’s Shrine rosters include some excellent prospects for the 2010 draft. Heading the Shrine list is Mississippi DE Greg Hardy who was arguably the best pure pass rusher in college football over the past several years when he was healthy. Other intriguing players to watch in Orlando include Des Willie Young of North Carolina State and Wisconsin’s O’Brien Schofield, BYU TE Dennis Pitta, Baylor MLB Joe Pawelek, OGs Sergio Render of Virginia Tech, Shelley Smith of Colorado State, and Texas Tech’s Brandon Carter, Utah OT Zane Beadles, Arizona DT Earl Mitchell, safeties Darrell Stuckey of Kansas, Justin Woodall of Alabama, and Kam Cancellor of Virginia Tech, CB Devin Ross of Arizona and Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes. Meanwhile, Western Illinois CB Patrick Stoudamire heads a solid small-school contingent which also includes QBs John Skelton of Fordham and Matt Nichols of Eastern Washington. Each team in the Shrine game has also traditionally included a player from Canada and this year‘s northern reps are C Matt Morencie from Windsor and Regina WR Jordan Sisco. Here are the full rosters for the East and West squads at this year’s Shrine game. The actual game will be played Saturday at 3 PM ET with TV coverage by ESPN2. |

That's a bummer. I was looking forward to watching Asante play. During Husker watch parties, I would parly joke (and parly not) in saying I'd take Nebraska's safties in Asante & O'hanlon straight up over both the Chiefs safties. Asante would send the message that he'll knock guys out. And O'hanlon has great ball skills. |
Thought I would bring this thread back up to remind people that the Shrine game is going to be on today, Saturday, 2 PM on ESPN2.

I had no doubt he would be the defensive coordinator for Kansas City. I really thought that they would wait to announce Crennel as the Chief's DC until after the game. Shows you what I know.

Looks like Clay Harbor from Missouri State has been added to the roster. I thought he was already playing in it. http://www.news-leader.com/article/2...355/1002/RSS02
