FT Daily: Chiefs rebuilding doesn't guarantee Cassel a job

Posted by Mike Florio on March 11, 2010 1:37 PM ET
Last month, Rosenthal pointed out some stuff about the contract given last year to Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel.

Bottom line? He might only have one more year to turn things around.

And there are some interesting alternatives available, if Cassel can't improve in 2010. For more, we give you PFT Daily.

MGRS13 03-11-2010 01:03 PM

Someone more computer savvy please go to PFT and put the video on this thread. Thank you in advance.

Bane 03-11-2010 01:19 PM

The way his contract is structured,we can let him go after this year if he sucks ass AGAIN,without it being a massive cap hit.IMO he never should have been the QB brought into a organization that was rebuilding.Usually when you "rebuild" it's because you suck, and you need new players all over the field. It'll take $150 million to put the players around Cassel to make him a good QB so they should cut their losses ASAP.Basically he was a $28(60) million version of Tyler Thigpen.IMO.

Earth shattering. If the Chiefs take Clausen, it would be a signal that they might not be happy with Cassel. WOW. Next he will tell me that if KC drafts Berry then McGraw might not start all 16 games next year.

nychief 03-11-2010 01:32 PM

this is just going to raise hopes and disappoint the cassel haters.

I refuse to believe KC would pull the the trigger on Clausen.Mainly cause that would be a huge sign that Pisoli is in fact not GOD.I figure they'll sit on Cassel for another year, let Weis tudor him and see if he can make him play better.I've give up on KC drafting and developing our own QB.

Mr. Laz 03-11-2010 01:34 PM

it's been discussed ad nauseam although some people still don't believe it.

http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=224642

Cassel's contract is structure in such a way that drafting Clausen is a possibility.
The presence of Charlie Weis makes it even more possibly
The less-than-stellar performance by Cassel last year gives even more reason to consider it

I'd love to hear whether Weis thinks Clausen will be a better pro than Quinn, and what went wrong with Quinn in the NFL.

The Poz 03-11-2010 02:01 PM

Christ, just trade Cassel to that Josh McDaniels team for Marshall (Josh has such a boner for Cassel that he just may bite), trade Brodie for Quinn and draft Clausen and let those two duke it out to see who starts.

I think Quinn can be a good QB in the NFL. He got put into a bad situation in Cleveland. They drafted him and then basically ****ed around with him.

I am not actually sold on Clausen as a potential franchise QB, and drafting him, in and of itself, would very liklely be another move I'd consider a mistake by Pioli.

However, drafting Clausen would also serve to show that Pioli is a stubborn ass who clings to his mistakes.

At the end of the day, however, I'd rather have him make that kind of move next year, when there should be an actual franchise QB available in the draft.

Wouldn't drafting Clausen be an admission by Pioli that (after a full season of evaluation) Cassel was a mistake?

And wouldn't that make Pioli someone that is NOT stubborn and does NOT cling to his mistakes?

Cassel's eyebrows alone have enough power to strike fear into Brodie's groin muscle.

I think that Croyle is the darkhorse in this situation. He is clearly the most talented QB on the roster. If and that is a big IF Weis sees Brodie up close and watches him throw whose to say that he wouldn't want Brodie starting instead of Cassel? I know that this is highly unlikely given Brodie ability to shatter at the sight of a blitz, but still.....Camp is going to be very interesting if it is the Croyle vs. Cassel showdown again this year.

The truth is that none of know what we're dealing with in the new regime just yet whether it be Haley, Pioli, Crennel or Weis. People may like to think they do but their still a lump of clay being molded into a collective group that will be making decisions together. No one will have a single say and there's not enough of a sample pool to predict their future decisions especially with Haley and Pioli because they're in new positions.

No, I don't know, you don't know, none of do. Deal with reality even here on the intraweb every now and then.

RustShack 03-12-2010 12:07 PM

will people quit saying pioli would be admiting mistake with cassel. Look at his ****ing contract its set up for him to be here 2 years max. hes a stop gap player, if pioli thought he was the future his contract wouldnt be set up like this

Yep. He's gonna make Cassel look like dog shit, and very well could be starting half way through the season if Cassel looks like he did last year. I seriously don't think Weis will stand behind Cassel, and Brodie's talent is just too hard to ignore.
I'm pissed at Brodie that he has not rocked up for this. I really think he could be a player if he could stay on the field. 20lbs of muscle would go along way toward preventing another inj.
I wonder what weis could pull out of Brodie.

Croyle also has a full season under his belt in 2009 where he didn't get hurt. And he took a few bruising hits. Especially in the Ravens game.

I think Croyle is the right quarterback to push Cassel. That is why they tendered him.

I can't believe Croyle is still in the league. I'd say he may be a good holder, but i peg him as someone who lets the ball go before it's kicked because he's afraid succop will kick his finger.

He's injury prone, but he's a talented MoFo, and I wouldn't say he's scared. I'm glad he's on the roster to push Cassel.

Gulfstream the jet, not the flight service dumbass. nice try though. you may be the dumbest person i've encountered here yet. And, yes a Gulfstream g2 can fly to Europe from the States no problem. Enjoy Commercial flying!!!
If you start saving tips now you may be able to charter one for an hour when you retire. As for owning, go ahead and file that under shit thats never gonna happen and move on. good luck in Italy ass pirate.

Why don't you show me some proof of your awesome private jet that you can take directly to Genoa, Italy.
The only thing you have shown is......nothing except a propensity to sling baseless insults like any southpark watching teenager would have the ability to do.

The less-than-stellar performance by Cassel last year gives even more reason to consider it

Cassel was victim of numerous dropped balls and a porous offensive line early on last season. That being said, nothing wrong with bringing on some serious competition to push him along.
