Smellympics: Round 1, Heat 2
The second qualifying heat in the Smellympics is above.
We have 140 candidates for the best smell in the world.* Note that many of the smells may be variants of other smells on the list, but I figured that if something is slightly different due to a different combination, I'll keep them both. We'll run 14 Round 1 heats on a semi-daily schedule, and the smells that finish in the top half of each heat will move to Round 2 (70 smells). Same thing there to cut it to 35, again to get to 16, then to 8, 4, 2, and we'll crown a champion from there. In each round I'll randomly shuffle the candidates. Each heat will stay up for a minimum of two days, including one weekday. (A lot will depend on my schedule, too.) So put on your smelling hats and get to work. Poll forthcoming if you're downwind. *Perfumes and colognes have been eliminated from the competition since they serve no other purpose. Edited from 141 to 140 since I had one smell double-listed. |
By the way, it's a weird coincidence that the two grandparent smells ended up at the top of this poll. All the initial seedings are completely random.

I thought I smelled mothballs.

I picked 5, but was torn on my last choice of alfalfa and garlic. I picked cut alfalfa but understand most of you are city slickers that don't have a life, thus probably have never experienced it.

Yeah that one had me puzzled at first if this was a good or bad smell poll. |
There was more than one smell nominated where I was uncertain if it was serious or not, mildew in the grandparents' basement and one's wife's feet after work being among them. I gave the benefit of the doubt in all cases where there was uncertainty.

What about the new car smell?
Hey Rain man, when are we gonna have another trial? I think Buc eyed Pea should be put through a Chiefsplanet trial for heresy and high treason for her ignoring Patteeu. |

The court is not hearing new cases at the moment, though you can certainly bring suit. |
Oranges smell amazing... a lot better than other picks in this pathetic heat.
|
Grandma's House
Apple Pie Hamburger and Onions Barbecue Cooking Garlic Combining two of those is amazing, three is orgasmic. My grandmother bakes all the time. I almost voted for the mildew smell, but I consider it to be the same as the first one more or less, even though the upper part of my grandparents' house smells different. It's a combination of smells, though. The carpet in the living room, the couch, the way the porch smells after a rainstorm, the beds upstairs, the oily goodness of my grandpa's workshop.....all of it is wonderful. |

 Wait, that might've been too much information. Never mind. |

Dude! GILF |
This heat is probably over, I don't see Oranges catching up with that many people already voting.

Yeah, this one is splitting out pretty clearly. Should I put up the next one?

Now, when talking about Oranges, do you mean the fruit itself or the flowers on the tree? There IS a difference.

As the suggester of oranges in the original thread, I'm let down it's not getting out of the first round. I can't believe people think pot roast smells better. Imagine peeling off the skin of an orange and smelling the goodness emanating from it. Oh well. |

FYI, orange blossoms (or maybe trees) is also in another heat, and I think there's a third variant that is something like "orange blossoms mixed with the chlorine of a swimming pool".
