Looking for a cool bar/restaurant in the KC area

I'm heading to KC for the weekend to hang with a buddy of mine who's recently gone through a divorce.

I'd like to take him out for some drinks/dinner, and I haven't been to KC in forever. I could use some help from the locals.

I'd prefer somewhere that has a good import/craft beer selection and serves food as well. Not looking for a club, or a place that plays music at 200 decibels - but a place where there's a decent 30-something crowd.

Rep to all serious replies, at least until I run out for the day.

75th Street Brewery

I know it's a chain, but Old Chicago In OP has hundreds of beers. Food is decent.

Marcellus 05-06-2010 10:04 AM

If you like hot wings I would go by The Peanut on 5000 Main St. It is an old bar (opened after prohibition ended) and kind of a dive but the they have the best wings I have ever had in my life. They have good unique sandwiches as well. More of a lunch spot than dinner. They also have a good breakfast on the weekends.

They have Guinness on tap, I am not sure what else.

I make it a point to try to go there every trip to KC.

It's basically an old Irish Pub.

Bowser 05-06-2010 10:05 AM

I've brought this up before, but it's worth it........

Go to Flying Saucer at Power and Light. Their beer selection alone is worth the trip there.

Go to the Brewpub up north. They serve many good brews, have bigscreen TV's for a baseball game, and best of all, the roof is a huge patio with a bar and tvs. If the weather is good, you can hang out up on the roof and it is a real good crowd, not a bunch of 21 year olds and loud music. Good food too.

Where exactly "up north?"

He lives off of 152 between 35 and 29, so that may work if we don't go to PL.

Sounds exactly what I'm looking for. I'll definitely look into the Flying Saucer as well.

OnTheWarpath15 05-06-2010 10:24 AM

And this place has officially lost its burst.

10 posts in and not a single "Buddies on Main" reference.

Fish 05-06-2010 10:28 AM

Missy B's has a great lineup lately...............

Reaper16 05-06-2010 10:31 AM

Blanc Burgers + Bottles. Best burgers in KC, very nice beer selection (bottles only). It meets both needs. The food is insane-good.

It's an awesome place. My favorite bar, so I second it.

Has it gotten stupid since it was on Guy's show?

Are these all the same place, or just coincidence that they both have a rooftop bar?

If not, what's the actual name of the place you're talking about, tooge/Jilly?

Sounds like your bud doesn't live that far from the Brewpub. It's in a shopping area on the east side of I-29, just east of Zona Rosa, on the north side of the huge Wal-Mart.

The place they're talking about (I think) used to be called the Gran Falloon. It's by Houllihan's, where I described it earlier. Surely your friend has heard of it.....

I just checked their menu, and I have to say I'm intrigued by the XXL Tenderloin Challenge.

Can anyone enlighten me on exactly what this is? I'm assuming breaded pork tenderloin.

Can't help you with that question. Looks like we have a guinnea pig for the issue, though! Bring Immodium for the day after! :D

And just a suggestion - If you guys wake up Sunday and are starving, Tomfooleries in Zona Rosa has an AWESOME Sunday brunch (used to, anyways. Been awhile since I had it....) When I went, it was like 15 a person, but the food and the selection was outstanding, and it never ended.....

The Mrs. and I hit the Plaza location for Sunday brunch every time we're in town.

Grinders is a great choice. Very low key with a good beer selection. Also, tomorrow is First Friday down in the Crossroads district. There you can drink on the street and tour a few art galleries. It's also walking distance to/from Grinders. The Cashew is also right be there and worth a stop.

He lives very close to the Brewpub then. It is right off 152 and Ambassador drive, which is a mile or 2 east of I-29. It sits just south of 152 in the boardwalk shopping area. You would dig it. Very cool place.

I haven’t been in a couple months, but as far as I know it’s the same place its always been, and probably always will be. One of the hidden gems of KC, IMHO. Biggest beer selection I’ve ever seen, even though I usually stick with the $5 natty pitchers :D

Flying Saucer is a chain based in Ft Worth Texas... not exactly very Kansas City....

Oh and Fox and Hound is also a chain. (Wichita based I think)

Not up north... but my cousin's place just south of the plaza has a good beer selection and GREAT menu.. pretty chill place AND George Brett comes in quite abit... so does Scott Pioli and Todd Haley... as a matter of fact, they catered the draft after party at the Haley's house.

The owner is Blair Hurst (my cuz) feel free to tell him that I sent you and he'll definitely hook you up.
