If you were an EMMY voter, what would be your nominations?
You - Planet member, person with keen taste in the Television medium, what shows and actors would you nominate if you were an Emmy voter this year?
My personal ballot would be as follows, winners in boldface: Best Drama: Breaking Bad Mad Men Treme Lost Sons of Anarchy Friday Night Lights Best Comedy: Community Modern Family Parks & Recreation Glee Curb Your Enthusiasm Party Down Lead Actor, Drama: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) John Hamm (Mad Men) Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) Hugh Laurie (House) Terry O'Quinn (Lost) (He was Lost's lead for its sixth season, and I give leeway for ensemble shows to nominate whoever) Lead Actress, Drama: January Jones (Mad Men) Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy) Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) Melissa Leo (Treme) Supporting Actor, Drama: Michael Emerson (Lost) Josh Holloway (Lost) Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) Chelcie Ross (Mad Men) (or if he only counts as "guest actor," then Andre Braugher from "Men of a Certain Age") Supporting Actress, Drama: Yunjin Kim (Lost) Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men) Khandi Alexander (Treme) Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) Beth Reisgraf (Leverage) Lead Actor, Comedy: Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) Joel McHale (Community) Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) Adam Scott (Party Down) Ty Burrell (Modern Family) Lead Actress, Comedy: Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) Lea Michelle (Glee) Toni Collette (The United States of Tara) Portia de Rossi (Better Off Ted) Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) Supporting Actor, Comedy: Aziz Ansari (Parks & Recreation) Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation) Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) Dany Pudi (Community) Donald Glover (Community) Supporting Actress, Comedy: Alison Brie (Community) Jane Lynch (Glee) Julie Bowen (Modern Family) Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation) Jenna Fischer (The Office) |
Dont they get nominated for a single episode?

I don't watch enough TV to be able to really do this. I do, however, think O'Quinn deserves the award for Lead Actor - Drama. That guy just kills in S6.
|
Think i would give Breaking bad mostly everything, for comedy it would have to be Modern Family easy (great show)
|
And the guy who plays the fat gay character on Modern Family is a KSU Theatre Alum.
So... I'll root for any success that show can grab. |
Bruce Campbell for best supporting actor: drama.

Good, except for the unwarranted P & R bias.

(I'm still watching The Office, and it still shows flashes, but it is in distant 4th place on Thursday nights for sure) |

But I actually had assumed initially you just took who was nominated, which I believe are out. |
P&R = awesome
But, Duke Silver > Ron Swanson, sorry. I'd probably nominate the actor that plays Abed from Community in the supporting comedy role, though. |

Is Season 2 the one that just finished airing in May? Or was that S3?
Which Season had the episode with the gay penguin wedding? Because that was absurdly hilarious. |

(I will grant that the character was written as sort of dumb in season 1. Season 1 was a show that didn't know where its voice was or what its character really were. Your description sort of fits season 1; another reason why I thought - still do think, despite your protestations - that you hadn't watched season 2.) |
She's basically playing a female Michael Scott, so yeah, she's a ditzy blonde.

I'd take any of the Modern Family writers and actors over anyone in their respective categories. I don't think that Alec Baldwin would lose to anyone. He's universally loved. And IMO, you've way overrated Parks & Rec. It's a good show, certainly better in season two than season one, but I don't think it's a "great" show just yet. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
If so, there's no way that Parks & Rec should even be listed because the show started in October and didn't really pick up until 2010. Well, at least IMO. |

Quote:
I just have a hard time believing that Parks & Rec and especially Party Down get many nominations, let alone wins. And I can't believe you left off The Big Bang Theory from your list. The actors are excellent and the writing is very good and consistent. I'll be surprised if Jim Parsons isn't nominated. Oh, and people in Hollywood LOVE Ty Burrell, so he could be a dark horse winner. |
Quote:
Big Bang Theory is surely going to get some nominations. But I don't care for the show or the performances on it, so it wouldn't get any nominations from me. |
Quote:
I think the show and actors are top notch. My wife (who was a math major at UCLA - 3.98) LOVES the show because she's been around geeks like that her entire life. It's Must See TV for her. I'm just getting into Party Down and while I like it (and the "inside" nonsense), I'm not at all shocked the ratings were dismal. I just can't see it connecting with folks outside of the 'Wood. |

Quote:
The show had absolutely brutally awful ratings, which is why it was canceled. No offense intended. |
Oh and Reaper, everytime I see Ron Swanson, I think of Phobia.

While I was surprised and pleased to see Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton get nominations for FNL, the list as a whole is atrocious. As usual, the Emmy nominations make an embarrassment of the entire medium.
|
Quote:
There are some surprising ones but I think, aside from the populism nods (majority of Glee noms) they're pretty decent. Hell, Best Actor in a Drama is effing stacked. Now that I've watched FNL it's shocking both Coach and Mrs. Coach haven't been nominated before because they're spectacular. Might be the best on screen marriage I've seen. More on my FNL thoughts later. Mike O'Malley for guest star, for sure. He wins easily, for me, anyway. The one glee nomination I completely agree with (non-guest star, obviously) is Chris Colfer. I'm glad they recognized him as easily the best character and performance on that show. The Pacific should win credit sequence but FNL should have been nominated. I also have to agree with this tweet: Quote:

I'll be lending all my good vibes in support of Foxy, O'Quinn, Mitchell and LOST for victory in their respective catagories.
And this past season of The Office was, hands down, it's most uneven thus far. I was actually surprised to read it landed a nod. |
Quote:
Jon Hamm was ****ing EPIC. His performance was head and shoulders above Matthew Fox, who basically played the same character for six seasons, outside a few lines (that weren't even convincing, IMO). As for Supporting Actor, I don't really have a dog in this hunt but I'd take John Slattery. His performance was sublime. Emerson and O'Quinn reiterated the same performances over the past 3 season and didn't bring ANYTHING new. I saw the Ann-Margaret episode and of course, the Eli Mitchell "Lost". No comparison. Eli Mitchell is predictable and lame, hence her "V" performances. Ann-Margaret is a legend. The same of which can't be said for Eli Mitchell. |

I think Brian Cranston should win for the third straight year; his performance is an all-time great one. That said, if Jon Hamm submits the episode "The Gypsy and the Hobo" than he has a shot of upsetting Cranston. I'd like to see Hamm win it one year; he's been very good this whole time. |

But saying they weren't convincing (those nominated) is rubbish. Their performances, by the way, should be independent of a writing failure - ie. religious bs. |
Uhh...Lebron James!
|
Quote:
And I'm sorry, but Matthew Fox has been earning Emmy nods for 6 years. Consistently. It's a shame it took him this long to be recognized. But independent of how I feel about Foxy's work on LOST as a whole, he really did some nice work in S6. Does he deserve to beat out the other noms? I don't know. I haven't watched any of those other shows. But Matthew Fox at least deserves to be a part of the conversation. |

Glad to see Friday Night Lights getting some respect...

You're asking a bunch of people that work full-time in television (and many of those same people work in film as well), to get home from a 10 hour day, then watch a shitload of television, some of it obscure and difficult to find? I've never seen FNL or Breaking Bad or Glee or Sons of Anarchy or Damages or Dexter or Monk or the Good Wife or Nurse Jackie or Treme or True Blood (and the actress who played Maryanne lives 20 feet across the street from me) or The Cleaner and on and on and on. There just isn't enough time in the week (or year) to watch all of these shows. Emmy voters vote for friends and actors that everyone recognizes. I'd bet money that the average Emmy voter hasn't even seen 25% of the shows and performances nominated - it's just too damn time consuming. |

Zach Gilford should have been nominated. Robbed.
Also, if Connie Britton doesn't win, Anna Gunn should. |
Quote:
Katey Sagal was better than Anna Gunn, imo. |
Quote:
I will say that I had trouble even recommending Gunn mostly because I don't think she's got the range. But compared to some of the nominees, I think she'd be a good fit as a nomination and a potential win. |

Can you actually give Britton a win without giving Chandler one?

Not that Kyle Chandler hasn't been incredible, but Brian Cranston, Jon Hamm and Hugh Laurie have been incredibler.

Quote:
And, yes, that talk is really, really good. I do have to say that Aimee Teegarden doesn't get the respect she deserves for FNL. Girl can pull off the emotion scenes with ease and precision. |
Bryan Cranston took a 3peat in a stacked category.
Also, Aaron Paul, FTMFW Eric Stone street as Fizbo wins. Mad Men wins dramatic writing award. Jim Parsons for Big Bang - FINALLY! Jane Lynch with an unsurprising and obvious win. |
Damnit! I missed out on the beginning!
Looks like Cranston won for best actor in a Drama series and Paul for supporting actor in a Drama series. Hell yeah! |
The Director of the dramatic Hank shootout scene lost. That's a damn shame but Aaron Paul overcoming voter reerunation makes up for it.
