Nerd alert...CIV 5 coming out on Sept 21...
I will have to clear my calendar...I still play Civ 4 way too much. Catherine of Russia RULES.
Only comp game I truly love. |
Guess I better clear my calendar for the next month or ten

Howdy O&S,
I was intrigued by your post so I looked up the Civilization game. Very interesting. Question: Do you reccomend a newbie start out with Civ 1? The technology looked a little old but if it is a sequential thing I guess I'll start at the beginning. Thanks. |
Can't wait.

Just try out Civ 5. If you have a console, try out Civilization: Revolution. |

what do you mean by "console"? |

Civilization V will be PC only. Civ 1, 2, 3 and 4 are PC only. |

You can probably go to Wal-Mart and find a copy of Civilization:Revolution for PS3, if you are interested in this type of game. However, Civilization:Revolution isn't nearly as deep as Civ IV, it offers a similar style of gameplay that you are intrigued by. |

Definitely looking forward to this one.

Civilization IV, already a fantastic game, is taken to the next level by the dedicated modding community. The Rise of Mankind mod, in my opinion, should be considered as the third expansion pack.

Start out on Chiefton or so and work your way up. By the time you get to Noble, it'll take you a month to figure out how to beat it. |
Civ 4 has a huge following.... I've always wondered why it was so popular, but i never did anything about it...
It must be Age of Empires-like? |
Has Sid Meier decided to fix the ****ing combat yet? If I have tanks, I want to be able to demolish the country that is still galloping cavalry around.

I absolutely love civ I,II and III but they kind of lost me after that
civ IV is ok but i guess i don't like the change is the diplomacy part of the game. |

Every Civ iteration has been awesome and has outdone the previous version with added layers of depth and strategy. I don't even care about the graphics improvements, though they're nice. It's the strategy that I love, and in each new version, they have improved from the last.
For my part, I see it as the most awesome and elegant strategy game of all time. I'm looking forward to Civ V. |

Civ 3 is a much better game than Civ 2, though. The diplomacy and cultural options make it much better. Civ 4 streamlined and expanded on the concepts that they introduced in Civ 3. I'd be suprised if you could even find a version of Civ 1 that would work on a modern computer. Civ 4 is the best Civ to date, and without a doubt, Civ 5 will make Civ 4 obsolete. Sid Meier doesn't jerk with his franchise. |
BTW... Civ is not a sequential thing. They just keep improving the previous versions by adding new concepts and strategies to pursue (and of course, graphics).
If you're looking for an entry point Civ V is going to be just as good as any. Just play on the easy mode until you're ready to move up. The bottom line for Civ: The game is easy to learn but difficult to master. |

Still loved LOTR2 though. Might have to give Civ 4 a look.. Is there somewhere online that everyone plays? |

I wish Sid Meier would make another SimGolf.

I go retro quite often actually. I have Masters of Orion II on deck right now, but probably won't get to it until well after I'm done with Starcraft II and then Civ V. |

Pretty farmlands.

So far: Wow.
The interface is so, so much cleaner and less cluttered than previous games. I've used the mouse the entire time even though I was so used to using the keyboard. I also like the notifications on the right side, and the way everything is presented. Graphics are beautiful. Gold plays a much more pivotal role. You have to buy tiles to expand your borders, rather than normal growth via culture. No more religion. Everything is done via "Social Policy" - which is kind of like the tech tree, you adopt certain policies which restrict you from adopting others, and you have prerequisites for others. Combat - love it. No more stacking units. If a unit requires a special resource, you can only build one of those units if you only have one of that resource. Once you discover optics your units can "embark" - move on water!? WTF? They are useless in water though, so you have to be careful. It seems they are doing this to get rid of transport units...which I like. Luxury resources - only 1 benefits you. Any others past that, you should just trade them. City states - kind of annoying so far, but somewhat beneficial. Haven't gotten in to diplomacy much yet, only have 1 bordering civilization, and he's behaved. Currently in the Medieval era (Ancient, Classical, Medieval), so i'll have more to report later. |

Ok - I was wrong, your borders DO expand when they gain enough culture, it is just slower than previous games.

I started out on Chieftain - it is extremely easy like previous games. From what I read, the AI doesn't necessarily get better on higher levels, but units have more hit points, research faster, etc...pretty much like the previous games. |
Okay, I'm playing as Japan and my city is demanding sugar and I have no idea how to get it for them.
|
Holy shit. I need a new video card for this game. My GTS 250 is beyond terrible. Everything has to be set at low!
|
I'm wondering about the "game length."
I always played CIV3 on conquest, and even playing 2 or 3 hours a night would have games that sometimes lasted for months before conquering the world. Is it like that or more like the 2-5 hour quick games that you saw out of IV on the PS3?... |

If not, you can trade for it with other civilizations, or have a city state give you some. |

Nevermind on the vid card. New drivers did it.
Game is dope as ****. |
I'm at work. Reading the game manual. Sigh.

Something I always wished for Civ was that the transitions to new ages would go slower. I have a lot of fun with the earlier parts of a game, but then it seems like in no time I am running around with tanks and battleships when I wish it was still muskets and guys with spears. Love the game, and I'm sure I'll love this one when I manage to get my hands on it, but I'm sure I'll see myself progressing through the ages and wish it would have been a little harder/more time consuming to do so.
|
I'm worried in my game right now because I have 1 unmet character, and he's already built like 4 or 5 wonders. I think you can win by building them all...not sure.
|
Is the only place to buy CIV2, 3, etc. the actual game site or are there alternative places with lower prices?

I started a new game because my last one turned into a cluster****....I had way too many units compared to everyone else...
Anyways, I chose random leader and got China, and that god damn Algonquin Indian kept asking me to side with him then he'd build cities right off my border. I finally had enough and wiped out all but 2 of his cities. I took over 3 of them and burned 2 of them. I already got his original Capitol. When I get back on tonight I'm going to eliminate him. I'm wanting to get to the Industrial Era or whatever, I really want railroads (and planes). I wonder how they are going to do the planes. In Civ Rev, you have 2 moves to do shit then get back to your base or else you run out of gas and crash. |
My favorite way to play Civ: maximum civilizations.
It's a hell of a ride when you've got 19 civilizations battling it out. |
