The Official Malware/Antivirus Thread - Need help or general advice? Read this first!
This thread provides information on malware removal, links to malware removal tools, and recommendations & links to anti-virus software. The intention of this thread is to provide quick and accurate support for malware-related issues and questions.
Many people here are willing to provide assistance if you're having computer problems, and this thread is not meant to discourage people from asking for help.... but, please read the information provided first, or else there's a good chance you'll be sent here, here, or here . We aren't Geek Squad, so while we won't grossly overcharge you for information and advice, we also aren't responsible for anything you do to your computer. Also, feel free to make suggestions on the content of this post, and I'll try to keep it up to date. Research A lot of information can be found at this EliteKiller link, including...
Malware Removal If you think your computer is infected, the EliteKiller link provides a thorough solution. Simply put... Quote:
The Rogue Removal Kit is is a zipped file that includes malwarebytes, CCleaner (a registry cleaner that will also delete temporary files), Combofix, Hitman Pro, and HiJackThis (HiJackThis is optional, see below). The instructions guide you through running these tools in Safe Mode With Networking; then running malwarebytes and an online scanner in Normal Mode. Some people don't recommend running Combofix unless you're fairly certain you need to use it, but I've never heard of people having major problems with it. Here's a list of symptoms to Vundo infections, which may help determine if you need to run Combofix. You can also look here to see instructions with screenshots on how to use Combofix. Taken from the readme in the Rogue Removal Kit: Quality Online Virus Scanners: (all scanners offer detection and removal) F-Secure NOD32 Bitdefender Quality Free Anti-Virus Software: Panda Cloud Microsoft Security Essentials Antivir Avast! AVG My two cents on downloading anti-malware software...
Other Helpful Tips & Tools Rkill will kill processes that may be preventing scanners from completely removing malware. To get into Safe Mode With Networking, press F8 every couple of seconds while the computer is starting (before the Windows splash screen). If you see the Windows splash screen, you will need to try again. The safe thing to do is log into Windows, restart, and try pressing F8 several times before seeing the Windows splash screen. Alternatively, my advice that falls into the category of “what I'd do if it was my own computer, but wouldn't tell someone to do it if I worked in tech support” would be, if you didn't get into Safe Mode the first time and you're at the Windows splash screen, hold down the power button until the computer turns off. When you start the computer again, it should automatically ask you if you want to go into Safe Mode With Networking. If you get a Blue Screen of Death after selecting Safe Mode With Networking, read the following posts on how to fix it: http://blog.didierstevens.com/2006/06/22/save-safeboot/ http://blog.didierstevens.com/2006/0...ring-safeboot/ http://blog.didierstevens.com/2007/0...th-a-reg-file/ Still infected, or just want to make sure everything is okay? HiJackThis is a tool that will create a log file that can be analyzed by geeks to see what is running on your computer. Install and run HiJackThis (preferably in Safe Mode With Networking), and select 'Do a system scan and save a log file'. You can then copy/paste the output to this thread, and with any luck, someone will stop by and let you know what you can delete. You can then checkmark the items in HiJackThis and click 'Fixed checked'. If you don't get a quick response here or would rather do it yourself, you can also go to http://hijackthis.de/, which is an online analyzer for your HiJackThis log. Simply copy and paste the log into the text box and click the Analyze button. During my testing of the site, I found it wasn't perfect, especially when a proxy was setup (the visitor rating would be 'extremely nasty', but the site itself would say it was safe)... but, it's at least a good tool that can significantly shorten the time it takes to analyze the log, and it gives you an idea of which entries you can delete or at least Google/post here for further research. You can also look at the responses to HiJackThis posts in this thread to get an idea of what is safe and what should be removed. Windows Performance A good starting point to knowing what processes and services are running on your computer is a HiJackThis log. There's also a lot of information that's only a Google search away. To manage the process that start when Windows starts, use msconfig (Start button -> Run... -> msconfig -> Startup tab). This is a good resource on startup processes, and it includes a large database of startup processes with information on whether they're required to run Windows or if it's okay to uncheck them. You basically want processes that are in c:\Windows checked, and you can generally uncheck processes in c:\program files (but there are exceptions, like your antivirus), but do some research (Google, the provided links, this thread) if you're not sure. Adobe, Apple (including qttask, Boujour, AppleUpdater, etc), and any messenger program (unless you have it sign you in at startup) are always the first ones to get unchecked on my computer. Services can be a little tougher to manage, because it's usually a much longer list, and it's not as simple as flipping them on or off. This is a great resource for managing Windows services (Start button -> Run... -> services.msc). Simply choose your version of Windows and then click on the Service Configuration link. It presents the default setup, a safe setup (what most people can use without any consequences), a tweaked setup for faster startup, and a bare bones setup for the super geek. There's also a Tweaks page for stuff like Adding/Removing programs and System Restore. |
So, worked on it a little while tonight & I think this is the info most people need.... maybe a little lengthy, and I can shorten it if people think it'll take away from people reading it.
|
Thanks, man. Hopefully this will help some people out.

This was a great idea.

For preventative measures, I believe these should be mentioned:
Lavasoft's AdAware Spybot Search and Destroy Spywareblaster It's been a while since I've actively used those, but they were gold back in the day. Ran the first two at 3am once a week. Updated the third one once a month (You can purchase autoupdates for $10). |
Quote:
I'll probably expand on the preventive stuff... the EliteKiller link provides links to reviews of scanners, and the readme of the rogue kit provides links to online scanners, so it's a challenge to not repeat stuff and keep the post fairly concise. |
Quote:
I will see what I can come up with as well. I have a few ideas of stuff that we can add and future items coming out that will help with malware crap. Quote:
I still believe hijack this is still one of the better tools to use to find malware and crap. Removing it, is another thing. |

According to my sonicwall the link to the downloads of the elite and hitman are viruses
Gateway Anti-Virus Alert: Suspicious#kkrunchy (Worm) blocked not sure if this is true or not but sonicwall seems to think so right now. |

http://forum.bitdefender.com/lofiver...php/t5966.html ...however, one thing I thought about adding to the original post was something about making sure you're downloading from a legit site, and I could see why someone might think the Hitman Pro site is iffy since it's .nl. So, I might link to cnet or something to avoid any confusion or the false positive. |
What about rkill? I have had to use it a couple of times on my kids computer whenever he forgets and gets that fake Antivirus crap....

If you have a legit copy of Windows installed, I strongly recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials. Not only is it pretty damn good, easy on system resources, it's FREE. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ |

I've waited for this: *Takes deep breath in* |
This thread's already helped me. I knew something was going on, because MBAM wouldn't run. I ignored that for a while, because there were no other symptoms. Eventually, I started getting redirected on Google searches... so I came here. Hitman Pro nabbed a couple things, and everything's working and back to normal. All the scanners work, and all come up clean.
Thanks fellas. I'm sick of letting it go until you have to wipe the HD. |
Thanks for the links. I have a few of these already. I'll add the rest.

Great thread...thanks for everybody's help

If you're still having the redirect problem, I'd run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and do a complete scan. My guess is that you've got a Browser Helper Object that is causing the issue, and it's only present within the browser. It doesn't look like it's installed any hooks in the rest of the system that would cause it to be reinstalled after removal. Make sure all your web browsers are closed, and run a complete scan. That should do it. |

Probably secondary to your problem, but I'd remove all those god awful redundant ass toolbars. Yahoo, Google, any other progam on your computer that wants to add shit to your browser. **** all that worthless shit. I've always found them to be more trouble than they are worth. JMO

I've had more than one person tell me, "I never installed that". 9 times out of 10, yes you did. |
Looks like UVC.exe is part of System Mechanic 6. But there's no reason it should be starting on each boot. I'd remove that. I've never seen any "System Mechanic" type program ever do anything positive on a computer. I'd really avoid those types of programs.
And yeah, you've got a whole shitload of stuff running that doesn't need to be. You could speed up your computer dramatically by getting rid of a lot of that junk. Much of it is repetitive too. Which seems to be the trend these days. Companies like HP and Yahoo will keep installing useless crap in multiple locations to ensure that their software remains on your computer no matter what. They're so insistent in their installs, that all the multiple copies end up bogging your computer down. And it's all unnecessary. And definitely get rid of that proxy override. |
my computer is just running slower than dogshit. I mean it's FUBAR'd. It's an old computer. I've had it about 5 or so yrs now. Dell Inspiron 6000. It's so slow that when I type it lags like a sum bitch and I have to wait for it to respond. I've done AVG and some other programs and they all tell me that all infected files etc are removed. Still runs like shit.
I want to just erase everything, reinstall my op system and reinstall drivers. Anyone know how to do that? I got the op system CD rom, however I don't have my drivers/utilities CD, I would just have to get a flash drive on the support Dell website and enter my computer product key so it can find my computer specs and I can download the drivers from that. I dont really have anything on here that I need to save. Used to have music (from Frostwire, I know - big no no) but don't need that anymore. Anyone help on this? I run Windows XP home ed. A step by step process would be nice. I just want to reinstall everything back to the way it was out of the box. (What i really need is a new god damn computer, but no funds to do that at this time.) |

Go here: http://support.dell.com/support/down...D=INS_PNT_6000 And download the drivers for your network cards, video card, sound card, input drivers(trackpad), etc. Put those on a flash drive. Give your computer a once over, and make sure you won't miss any documents or anything. If you need something, copy it to the flash drive as well. Don't forget your internet bookmarks and address book and such if you want those. When you're content with everything going away, just put in the op system CD, and reboot the computer. When it first starts up, tap the F12 key repeatedly until you see it load the Boot Selection screen. This will be a DOS menu that allows you to choose what device you want to boot to. It will list your HD, the CD/DVD drive, network boot, etc. Choose the CD/DVD drive. That will boot to the op system CD. Once that loads, just go through the setup process. Be sure to tell it to erase the HD before installing. That option will be available when you choose which drive to install Windows on. Otherwise it will install over the top of your current install, and that will be a mess. If you need any additional help, just start a new thread about it so we don't clutter this up with reinstall posts. |
Great Thread! Many tools listed in here I use frequently. :thumb:
I'm glad to see Hijackthis on here it's tops in my book. You might add this site to the OP. http://hijackthis.de/ I've used it quite frequently. Copy and paste your log (or upload the txt file) and the webpage gives you an online analysis. Some people are hesitant to post information from their computer on a forum and this would be an option for them. |
Ugh, just got a redirect virus that CCleaner and MBAM won't fix (at least as I'm currently running them). Will post a hijack log soon.

Any suggestions on programs to cut out and help improve performance? |
Piriform has just updated CCleaner and Defraggler to 3.0
http://www.piriform.com/ |
I ran into a strange virus/trojan last night called Windows Defender*. It installed on my computer (not sure how) and it looked like a virus-scan or spyware-removal dashboard. I tried to close it so that I could uninstall it, but it just went into the system tray. Right-clicking the system tray icon didn't show an 'Exit' or 'Shut Down' option, so I went to Task Manager to kill the process. Task Manager would open for a second, then close. I tried it over and over thinking "oh crap". I rebooted, and the 'Defender' app started up immediately and proceeded to end other processes. I tried Task Manager again, and it closed after a second. I opened up Firefox to try and look it up, and Firefox closed after a second. Everything I tried to open would close almost immediately (even running 'cmd' and 'msconfig.exe').
During one of the times Task Manager flashed open, I saw that one of the processes was 'defender.exe'. I opened Windows Explorer, which luckily stayed open, and searched for it. Sure enough, defender.exe was sitting in the Users directory (I'm running Vista). I tried to delete, but couldn't because the process was running. So I renamed it and rebooted. This time, it didn't run on startup, so I quickly went in and deleted defender.exe and went into msconfig.exe and removed it from startup. I also went into the registry and removed all entries that contained 'defender.exe'. It was 1:30am by the time I got rid of it, so I shut down my machine and went to bed. Tonight, I plan on doing a full system scan: AVG, Ad-Aware, and a few of the programs mentioned in this thread. From what I gathered, it was just a bogus app that tries to get people to buy "full version" to get rid of whatever virus it says you have. I think everything is ok now, but just want to make sure. Any thing else I should be doing or looking for? ========== * Not THE Windows Defender, just trying to disguise itself as legit. |
Bastard rogues.
Run CCleaner to check your registry. Rogues **** up file extensions. |

At least it was just the defender.exe... the really nasty ones will have a DLL that gives a random name to the .exe each time you start Windows. :# |

I'm definitely anal about cutting down my startup time and services running (especially since it's a 4 year old laptop). Use Soluto primarily, but I'll make sone suggested changes.
Thanks again! |
Soooo.....
My wife got one of those pop-ups that says you have a virus and you need to run the scan. In all her infinite wisdom, she clicked to run the scan. Now it's got her computer 13 different kinds of FUBAR. I downloaded the rouge removal to a jump drive and copied it to her hard drive. I tried to run the components and every time I start the components up and the "Security Tool" gives me an error and closes the program. The instructions say to run it in normal mode. Any suggestions? Should I try it in safe mode? Thermonuke the whole ****ing thing? What say you? |

Well, DaFace helped me out (He's the man). I managed to get into safe mode and do a system restore. I think it worked. I'm currently running MBAM in Normal Mode. Hopefully that will be the end of it. |

And is there a reason you have a Comodo VPN client running on your system? If you're not actively using that, I'd remove it. I'm also a little concerned about all the missing system files that HijackThis is listing. It looks like you upgraded from Vista to Win7, and it left a bunch of dead links in your registry. If you're familiar with editing the registry, I'd remove those. |

Also, I'm not familiar with editing the registry, I don't want to screw that up. |

Perhaps I'll whip up a thread detailing how to edit the registry sometime soon. It's not as difficult as it sounds. |
My registration for Avast ran up today... I tried registering for free and its not working for me. I also tried registering online at their site and it said they would send me a code... but I haven't received it yet.

Alright WTF!
I went back to the site and did the "resend code" so I put in my email and I got one saying my email wasn't in the database blah blah blah. So I went though and filled out the registration AGAIN. Still no email. Tried the resend again, and same message. |
And when I tried registering through the Avast thats on my computer, it says "cannot find file specified"

Yeah none of those worked... I did a system restore last night to a week ago and my Avast was working again. It said I registered for it 5/28/10 and is good through 5/28/11...
I have no idea what happened, but it works again. |
Is there an order of attack with all these .exe files. Let a rook know!

computer issues
I ran a log but everytime I try and post it FF gives me a server reset screen. Have tried to upload it in attachment with note pad and copy and paste get the same results both times. Funny thing is I can post just fine anywhere else.
Just got done cleaning in safe mode but still seeing pop ups. Used my symantec coporate edition. NO virus. Cleaned with Malware bytes and Geary Register cleaner but not convinced it's fixed yet. Suggestions??? Thanks. |

http://hijackthis.de/ I've used it quite frequently. Copy and paste your log (or upload the txt file) and the webpage gives you an online analysis. I've asked for this to be included in the OP but it seems no one's paying attention to my posts. |
Tried and it won't let me...gives me the same thing. Problem loading page...with fire fox and won't let me connect with IE. I can post everywhere else it seems but for some reason it won't let me load the log either in txt form or copy and paste?

If it's only happening here, you might try clearing your cookies. Sometimes cookies get cranky when you change servers like we just did.

need some help...
Hey yall! My name is Shante and I am stoked to be here. I was at a friend's house after watching a game a couple weeks ago and we were looking at this forum for different fans and their thoughts. After reading for a while, I decided it was time for me to get my own laptop and hook up to the net so that I could be a part of it. I really was motivated by this forum and my love of movies to boot up; but I do have worries. i have heard stories from my friends about internet security violations and what not, and after picking their brains for some time, I am still kinda trying to figure out a solution I feel comfortable with.
I was wondering if there was anyone here, maybe, who could point me in the right direction... I have been using Win XP, and it comes with a firewall, but I am worried it isn't strong enough. I am thinking about getting Zonealarm’s DataLock data encryption software. Basically I think that for laptops, it is a good way to make sure that if it gets stolen or I lose it (the reality is more like forget it) that nobody can access my data. It seems to run in the back ground so that you don’t know it is actually running. They say that it uses a pre-boot authentication in which users must provide the correct username and password before the operating system boot process will even begin. They also have a 24/7 password recovery service incase you forget your password. A couple of questions: 1) Is this pre-boot authentication something that will help keep the data secure? 2) What kind of encryption is used? 3) How hard will DataLock make getting the data from my hard drive? |
I just got over my MalWare problem with some help from a guy on bleeping computer. That guy talked me through every step and now everything is back to normal and better than ever with my computer. I would recommend you check it out. Cool people and don't mind helping others a bit it seems like. Saved me some $$ that's for sure. I was about to the point of throwing it out and buying a new tube.
My computer was so jacked it would take IE 3-4 minutes to load a page at the first. and FireFox kept crashing plus the stuff I had wouldn't even let me post my logs after checking with HIJack. There were many other problems it showed also. Download the TDDS killer that they recommend run it then dl the Norman Malware Cleaner also and run it....took it 3-4 hrs but between both of them the cleaned up my stuff. Anyway just check them out if you have time! http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ |

Combofix has it's purpose. But seeing it recommended by inexperienced people for all different types of infections just makes me cringe. This is a bad idea, unless a well trained tech who actually knows what he's doing instructs you to run it. There are much better and much safer utilities for the average user that will fix a helluva lot more than Combofix will. |
Datalock
Quote:
My understanding is that Datalock is 256k - which is the strongest. Datalock runs in the background, and I have not found anyone saying that it is slow. |
I just bought a new laptop. To connect with the wireless I need the network security key, which apparently we never wrote down. Is there somewhere on my old computer settings that I can find it?

There's freeware out there if you Google 'find wireless password', but I've never used any of them, so I don't know if it's reliable. If it's a Linksys router, you can go to 192.168.1.1 in your internet browser on your old computer or while wired with your new laptop to get into your router... the default user/password to get into the router is admin/admin, and you can find the key under Wireless -> Wireless Security. |

Thanks for the responses. I think this is the router- It says Ubee on it and Time Warner set it up. I'm really dumb with this stuff.

That should get you into the router. Then you'll navigate to the wireless section, and reset it there. |

Thanks a lot for your help. |
Well, i got a big problem...
Got something on the other comp, malwarebytes didn't pick it up, but symantec did. got one of the two it was messing with in quarantine, but it is giving me major RAM, memory, and hard drive not found errors. Files are missing from my documents, i tried sticking in a usb card, but apparanantly it was instantly corrupted, so no dice adding anymore anti viruses. keeps trying to get me to "defrag" using "Good Memory", whatever the hell that is... looks like a fake defrag/antivirus program. Any ideas? i can't get into safe mode either... says windows vista, and i have XP |
