get out into the woods thread

Ok, who's been out in the woods. What have you seen? What have you shot? Pics? I just trimmed lanes for my stands this weekend and plan on being in one friday with a bow. Seeing lots of deer wandering around my place.

seclark 10-26-2010 03:07 PM

one of my sons came down this weekend and put up his deer blind back in my timber. he was only down there for about 20 minutes. i walked down there sunday after the game, and saw that the little b@stard put his blind right under my favorite tree stand.:cuss:

i've seen lots of deer. tracks all over the place, and they've got 2 big holes wallered out where i put the mineral.

I think I'm set up better than I probably ever have been. If I don't get a big one this year, it's not going to be due to lack of forethought and effort.

I've sat 3 times for at least 4hrs, and have seen 1 deer...it was a 150ish 10pt but too far away.

Last saturday, I sat through a monsoon that took the diehards out of the trees. Wind was blowing hard enough, I just grabbed onto the tree to ride it out and then decided to wait the rain out thinking the deer would move.

Wind is blowing hard for 2 days, wednesday night has a pressure change and cold temps....It'll be on thursday and I'll be in a tree when the sun comes up. For the next 3 weeks during daylight, I'll be in a tree when I'm not at work.

Last night was harvest moon no? I think that means the pre rut starts in about now. Something about this time of year gets me so amped up/

seclark 10-26-2010 03:16 PM

this will be the first time my sons have come home to deer hunt since they left for college in 2000.
i've got their rifles ready. stocked up on ammo. the old buck knife is sharpened.
i'm pretty stoked.

I'm in a semi-wooded area and I don't remember seeing so many wild turkeys. Too bad you can't hunt here. The deer were culled last year and their numbers are down but still a common sight.

tooge 10-26-2010 03:19 PM

A buddy of mine invited me to north central kansas for pheasant/quail and I couldn't pass it up, being private land and all. Then I come to find out that it is the weekend of the rifle opener here in Missouri. I already commited. FML!

Havent heard or seen a fox in a month or so, have been hearin coyotes closer than i have in years.lots of coons and cats like every year. Shotguns tuned up, traps are ready, dogs feelin better.
im ready.

Went out spotting last weekend to check out my upcoming deer hunting spots for this season. Found this near the trail:

moxie drags up sheds all the time. so i know there are some decent size bucks roaming the dark parts around my place.

Slayer Diablo 10-26-2010 04:16 PM

A Bud can, a knife, and what appeared to be a canine skull...no other bones, so I'm sure it was one sick b**tard rather than random chance.

ToxSocks 10-26-2010 04:18 PM

Uhm..well...A raccoon chased me around my trash can the other night.....

Iowanian 10-26-2010 06:22 PM

I shot a sick opossum yesterday morning with my grandad's rifle. He'd have liked that.

Tonight I was moving or fixing 2 of my stands...a little tilt and a better tree...anyway, saw a big buck. big.

boogblaster 10-26-2010 07:09 PM

Couple buddies of mine have been out weekends .. two times durning the black-powder season once durning bow season .. wounded one small buck missed another .. haven't seen any big bucks .. lots of does moving .......

rockymtnchief 10-26-2010 07:21 PM

Had 6 cow elk in the yard this morning. 8 mule deer (2 bucks) tonite. And a damn pack rat under my F-150 hood.

The neighbor had wolves get a calf so I'm ready to do some shooting.

Hog's Gone Fishin 10-26-2010 07:25 PM

I'm gonna slip up on one this year and give him a hand job. Even if it kills me.

HonestChieffan 10-26-2010 08:51 PM

Had a really pretty 8 point under stand for ten min tonight. First decent buck I have seen but the bright moon has them totally nocturnal. My bet is it gets goodafter Nov 1-2-3.

Be after them all week so hope to see more activity as week goes on.

Post hunt I did enjoy Turkey on ice.

daughter ran over a skunk in the driveway yesterday morning. of course, she left it squished right there and headed on up to town to watch the grandkids. son & daughter in law, came by bitching last night about how now their place smells like skunk.

she (daughter) later drove to her job at the new steakhouse in town and parked till 11pm last night. i bet that went over well.

i bagged up the corpse, and chucked it in the river on the way to work. now my truck stinks.

I ran from a baby alligator shooting pictures in the woods after a rainfall. Never thought I'd find one in water that shallow. I got a huge bruise on my arm from slamming into the car door I ran so fast. No gator meat for me.

No, I have always wondered what a 12gg slug would do to a possum thats all. It makes them see through
