RUMOR: Urban Meyer Stepping to step down

Todd Wright of Sporting News Radio http://sportingnewsradio.com is reporting:

# I've been told by multiple people to watch for Urban Meyer to step down (again) as Florida Gators head football coach later today

# IF Urban Meyer is actually stepping down THIS time, the bigger question is WHY & IF he resurfaces somewhere else (Ann Arbor, Denver, etc?) 15 minutes ago via web

If this turns out to be true welcome to the Tebow saga for a couple of weeks .....

NFL head coaching is not heart-friendly.

What I'm hearing is his health is worse that what's been reported and that the medications he's been on have been messing things up for him.

I could see them pursuing Mullen. Mullen already said no to Miami and was beginning extension talks with Miss. St. but if Florida comes calling he might listen.

No thanks to Petrino.

Update: Is Urban Meyer's Health The Reason He's Resigning From Florida?

The last time Urban Meyer announced his resignation as Florida Gators head coach, he listed his health and his family as his two primary concerns. After the 2009 SEC Championship Game, Meyer was admitted into a Gainesville hospital with chest pains and dehydration.
The next day he stated his intention to step down, dialing down the decision on the following day to a leave of absence. He coached the team in the Sugar Bowl, did most of his recruiting work from home, and returned as full-time head coach in March 2010.
This time around Meyer hasn’t mentioned his health, only his family. Should we be putting two and two together and presuming his health is also a factor?
Central Florida’s Bright House Sports Network reports Meyer’s heart condition is getting worse, and that he told Gators players that he’s retiring from coaching.
If the stress brought on by an SEC East title run contributed to his 2009 health scare, the pressures of righting the Florida ship as currently constructed could indeed be even worse. If the Gators lose their bowl game, they’ll finish with the program’s worst record since 1987.

Update: Urban Meyer Resigns: Press Conference At 6 PM; Florida Coach Releases Statement

It’s official: Urban Meyer has resigned as head coach of the Florida Gators. There will be a press conference at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium to announce the news.
Meyer and Athletic Director Jeremy Foley came to an agreement on the resignation Tuesday. On Wednesday, the university released a statement from Meyer, which reads in part:
“I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been helping my teams win titles. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one.
“But after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I’ve been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports. I know how fortunate I am to be in a position to make this choice and to have a family that is as loving and supportive as my amazing wife and children have always been.”
Meyer will remain the Gators’ head coach for the Outback Bowl, which Florida will participate in on New Year’s Day. After that, Meyer will walk away from the program to which he gave six seasons. During that tenure, Meyer won two National Championships and three SEC East titles.

Urban Meyer Resigns As Florida Football Coach (Again)

According to FanHouse's Brett McMurphy, Urban Meyer is stepping down as the head coach to the University of Florida's football team. (Yes, again.) The official announcement is expected to come in a press conference at 5 p.m. EST Wednesday evening.
If reports are true, this would not be the first time that Meyer has stepped down. Last December, Meyer announced he would resign as Florida's head coach following a health scare earlier in the month (Meyer went to the hospital with chest pains and was released later the same day on Dec. 6). At the time, he said, "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family."
However, the next day, Meyer changed his attitude and his resignation became just a leave of absence. He coached the Gators in the Sugar Bowl on Jan . 1, a win over Cincinnati, and by March 17, he has completely resumed his duties as Florida's head coach.

Meyer took over at Florida in 2005 after two years at Utah. He led the Gators to two national championships, in 2006 and then again in 2008.
Plenty more as it develops here in this StoryStream and at our Florida blog, Alligator Army.

That could happen. Meyer said he wanted to get away from big-time college football.

DaKCMan AP 12-08-2010 03:45 PM

Sounds like Dan Mullen is the frontrunner as of now. We'll see how things change over the immediate future. I think Jeremy Foley will act quickly.

Mojo Jojo 12-08-2010 03:46 PM

I think the Broncos are a real chance, but don't count out the Redskins...Dan fired Marty after one 8-8 season to hire Spurrier.

DaKCMan AP 12-08-2010 04:09 PM

From another board:

Quote:

Just heard Brady Ackerman on radio with Frangie say if he was betting he thinks Petrino will get offered the job. Dooley thinks either Mullen or Petrino. Dooley was just on radio as well.

Frank Frangie said Foley's #2 man last time was Petrino and he wasn't offered because Meyer accepted the job who was his main target.

The University of Florida is in shock upon hearing the news that head coach Urban Meyer has decided to retire. Here is a detailed account of how it unfolded from a current player.

Quote:

"We were told we had a team meeting today, but we thought it was regarding the bowl game. That was our mindset that we are going to talk about the bowl game.

"When we showed up the only coach that was there was the strength coach and some GAs (graduate assistants). The only coach was Coach Meyer — no other coaches were in the room. Urban gave us our calendar for the bowl week and stuff and told us to put the practice calendar down and we could tell something was wrong, (there was) no energy and you could tell that something wasn't right. He was talking about life skills and how things did not go the way we wanted and our main objective is to win the bowl game.

"After that he told us he spoke with those close to him and all of his doctors and (Meyer said) 'if I keep going my health will continue to get worse so I can't risk it to my family — so I am stepping down. I will be around and will help Jeremy Foley get a top-notch coach and you guys will be fine.' He was saying he has not been able to be involved with his family.

"As he was finishing, he was telling us for most of us this will be good because some of us need to start over and make a new impression with another coach. Near the end of the speech the freshman class was going crazy, saying they were all leaving and they kind of lost it for the most part. It really hit those guys hard, but to the others it was not as emotional. It was mainly a dead silence and everyone other than the freshmen were just looking around.

"Urban told us that he will still be around for us and a bunch of guys went to see him one-on-one to discuss it in more detail.

"After we left we were called back into the team meeting room and it was only Jeremy Foley — no Urban Meyer. Jeremy Foley said Urban had just come to a point where you come to a point in life where you have nothing left in the tank for coaching. Foley told us it's his job to bring in a GREAT coach for this team and he told us not to worry about it at all — 'that will be the easy part. I will bring in a great coach, this has happened before and bringing in a great coach is the easiest part of this deal. I will bring in a great coach who will get this train back on the right tracks.'

"After that it was kind of like a state of shock. Everyone was on the phone calling people they know and the freshman and sophomore kids were all saying the coaches don't care about us — and those kids just kept saying they are going to leave. I mean a lot of players said they were leaving, but the true Gators are not going anywhere."

DaKCMan AP 12-10-2010 08:14 AM

The names I'm hearing the most are Chris Petersen, Bobby Petrino, Bob Stoops, and Dan Mullen.

I'm really warming to the idea of Chris Petersen. He's turned down jobs before so I'm not sure he'd leave Boise State, but I think he'd be an outstanding hire. He's making $1.2mil a year now at Boise State so a more than double pay raise, the real possibility of a BCS Championship, Florida weather, and Florida recruiting *might* entice him to move.

Bobby Petrino is a great coach and offensive mind, but he's so damn shady. While I think he'd be successful at Florida, he's a guy who I'd always worry about jumping ship. Not a big fan.

Bob Stoops is not a real possibility, IMO. He was offered the job when Spurrier left, and declined. It is rumored he was approached again when Zook was fired, and declined. Oklahoma is a premier job and has given Stoops a raise each time Florida came calling. He's also lost some of his luster with all of his big game losses. He'd be a good hire, but wouldn't be very exciting. I don't there's any chance he leaves Norman.

Dan Mullen = backup plan, IMO. He's relatively young, fiery, and offensive-minded. But he's also not that exciting and only has 2 years of HC experience. Memories of him are fonder since he left Florida and he's done relatively well at Miss St. but I think Florida can get a better coach.

DaKCMan AP 12-11-2010 09:51 AM

Right now all signs point to Bob Stoops.
