Possible broken finger; worth it to see a doctor?

I wish my fluke accident happened on 12/31 when my freaking deductible was met. But nooooooo...

so yesterday afternoon I'm goofing off why my son and my hand got push backward and the finger jammed inward HARD. It's swollen, blue, and won't bend. I put a $2.00 splint from Walmart on it until I figure out if it's worth a trip to the doctor. Is it worth spending hundreds of dollars on a doctor visit and Xrays...for a finger.

Will they just splint it and then head to the bank? Anyone here have experience with broken fingers?

Bugeater 01-03-2011 04:33 PM

lol

Scorp 01-03-2011 04:33 PM

I am not a doctor but I play one on TV.

Phobia 01-03-2011 04:33 PM

You should see a psychologist for that finger immediately.

This is similar to what I've heard. Thanks. Our health insurance changed (for the worst) Jan. 1 and now going to the doctor has become less automatic..so to speak.

Ming the Merciless 01-03-2011 04:41 PM

Does it hurt when you poke at it? (touch it)

Reaper16 01-03-2011 04:41 PM

I've had two broken fingers and a broken toe heal just fine without going to a doctor, Hell, without even a splint.

Ha, no. We were joking around and trash talking and I punched him and he tried to punch me back. My hand got in the way. He felt so bad. Just a weird accident. Sounds worse than it was.

I broke my lil finger this past summer playing football. I wore a splint on it for a few days because it was pretty tender. I never went to the Dr though. Healed a bit crooked and knobby knuckles. Functions just fine though now.

Which finger and which bone do you suspect is broken?

Yeah, I have the splint to keep it from being bumped. It's helped for that.

My index finger and I think it might be dislocated or broken. It's the bone right in knuckle on the middle of the finger. It feels elevated compared to my other hand. I think a tendon was pulled too. Got soreness up to my elbow. Pain only in the finger.

If it were broken, you wouldn't have pain up your forearm.

Lol. I LOVE hearing libs complain about their health insurance after Obamacare.

HemiEd 01-03-2011 04:56 PM

You are eventually going to pay your deductable, right? What is the difference between now and March or June?

I almost lost a finger the end of September, removing a ring and pinion to sell for a $100. I think I am up to about $2000 in medical bills now, but I still have my finger, and they all tell me how lucky I am.

I have a very strong appreciation for my fingers now. I say get it looked at.

I've jammed my finger a million times from playing basketball. Had a few nasty jams a few years ago, one which caused a lot of bleeding. I treated it myself and I know for sure that it didn't set right. My fingers work fine, but I can tell they're weaker than the others and I know it's going to really bother me big time when I get older.

Plus, now I have to jerk it with a few fingers. Makes the tug a little tougher to pull off.

I'd get it checked out. I wish I wasn't such a stubborn little shit.

Rain Man 01-03-2011 05:02 PM

I've broken the same pinkie finger a couple of times. The first time I went to the doctor and he shrugged and said, "Let it heal". My impression is that unless the bone is displaced there's not much they can do.

The first time, it took about two years before I could make a fist. The second time it was about a year. Both times I looked pretty sophisticated when drinking, because my pinkie would be extended as per high society requirements.

It healed fine, though, because now I don't even remember which hand it was.

Iowanian 01-03-2011 05:24 PM

It sounds jammed. have someone yank on it.

If it's not dislocated, they don't do anything but put a splint on it. If it's dislocated, unless it's in the joint and needs pins, they'll pop it and put a splint on it.

I've broken fingers more than once, and had them dislocated and laid across my palm...and jammed. It's not easy to tell and it hurts about the same.

Ice and splint and rub some dirt on it. Ronnie Lott chewed his off and played a football game, you can continue to bake pies and vacuum woman.

I tore my flexor tendon in my right ring finger in July 2009. I splinted it, but it didn't heal well. I had surgery in October 2009 and it came out the same as it was before surgery. Still bent, still can't make a fist, and my whole right hand is now weakened. Growing old sucks.

black angus 01-03-2011 08:42 PM

I just taped mine to the middle finger for a week or two and tried not to bang it on anything. After I had someone pull hard on it.

Were you able to perform as expected?

CrazyHorse 01-03-2011 09:25 PM

My experience says "yes", see a doctor.

I was always one of those "rub some dirt on it" guys. Go to the doctor only if there is no other way. Much for the same reason. No money to spend on doctors.

After letting many nicks and bumps heal on thier own, I was no worse for wear. Then I turned 40. All the stuff I did as a kid and my early 20s has come back to reintroduce itself in my 40s. Not only do you want it fixed right now, you want to be very committed to rehabbing it. Rehab is everything.

If you let it go it probably wont bother you much now. But will catch up to you later if you're anything like me.

If you decide to do nothing however, at least rub some dirt on it.

Good luck.

threebag 01-03-2011 09:47 PM

Use the splint and alcohol for the pain if that doesn't work buck has some Gynolotrimin.

googlegoogle 01-03-2011 10:06 PM

dude. call ask a nurse first if your concerned about paying a doc.

phone no in the yellow pages.

WV 01-03-2011 10:12 PM

Dip it in antifreeze....

penguinz 01-03-2011 10:17 PM

A splint can make it worse. If you do need to splint it to protect it from bumps make sure you remove it on occasion and try to flex it in order to keep the ligaments from tightening up.

memyselfI 01-05-2011 07:17 AM

Not broken. Likely tendon damage. I should have listened to my instincts and you guys....:banghead:

InChiefsHeaven 01-05-2011 09:14 AM

My son broke his pinky finger playing basketball a couple years back. Wound up he had two breaks and a floating piece of bone and required surgery and a pin inserted. I used to think a broken bone was just something you taped to the adjacent finger and try to keep from hitting it, but damn, his was pretty jacked up. But on the outside, it was just really swollen and black and blue.

If you have insurance, and can afford it, to me it's worth at least taking a look. If we hadn't taken him in , they would have had to re-break it for it to heal correctly. I think you did the right thing getting it looked at.

Iowanian 01-05-2011 09:16 AM

So it was jammed....

You know you're getting good advice when it begins "iowanian once told me"

tooge 01-05-2011 10:23 AM

unless there is bone sticking out or it is really, and I mean really crooked, then dont go to the doctor. If you can stick it up your ass without too much pain, you will be fine
