Do you keep a journal/diary?

I'd like to start one, but I'm often too careless to be strict with it.

Rooster 01-13-2011 01:04 PM

I don't but I read Rainman's diary every Thursday. Disturbing to say the least.

Iowanian 01-13-2011 01:05 PM

no.

I'm not a 12 year old girl.

I'm sure yours will be delightful.

El Jefe 01-13-2011 01:05 PM

I kept a journal and wrote in it everyday I was in Haiti to remember everything to the fullest, don't have one now, nor do I plan on doing it.

Oh cmon, a number of the Founding Fathers had one. Reagan had one.

It would be so cool to receive one of my grandpa's journals from when he was in his 20s, and I could spend a minute each day reading about his thoughts and actions from when he was my age. You don't think that would be cool?

eazyb81 01-13-2011 01:11 PM

If you used the time you spend writing in a diary to workout instead, the boys will be more likely to pay attention to you.

Brock 01-13-2011 01:15 PM

It's a good idea, particularly if you have a poor memory and can't remember why you did certain things.

Iowanian 01-13-2011 01:21 PM

I keep a "book of facts" and have since college.

It's not about my feelings or thoughts though. It's notes on business conversations or projects so I know what I said, what I promised and visa versa, and i have used it to show someone why I did something or didn't down the road.

The biggest problem with it as a grownup is time.

My wife's grandmother had a set that is probably more than knee high on the ground that some thumbed through after she passed. I guess from that perspective, it is neat, but It's not something I have time for and it's not something I'd make time for if I had it.

I'll just leave my book of man stuff...photos of men of my family doing man things(hunting etc)

blaise 01-13-2011 01:21 PM

No, but I like to carry a little notebook to jot down stupid things I think of.

tooge 01-13-2011 01:41 PM

I keep an outdoor, hunting and fishing journal so that I can look back and see what time, day, temperature, and what the fish and or animals were doing at the time. It really helps me to narrow down where to start. I also keep a journal of activities that are special that my kids and I do, like first chiefs game, canoe trips, etc.

seclark 01-13-2011 01:44 PM

i did every day for 2 years. then i got to the 2nd page and said "f@ckit" and quit.

Great, tooge. Have you always kept those two journals? If not, do you think the entries have helped you keep afresh than the events in which you did not keep the journal?

I do when I am in Denmark. I write about things that happen every day and it keeps the trip fresher in my mind as time goes by. Just video and stills don't capture enough of a good vacation.

How often do you go to Denmark? Is it for family reasons or work?

I have family there and friends I've made in recent years. I was there in 1995 and didn't go back until 2005. Now I have gone each year since, and am going this year, too, from May 9 to June 3, unless I run into White Sweater Girl from 2005... I might apply for a work VISA if I see her again!

My avatar is where one of my favorite pubs is, in the cellar of that building which was one man's home back in the 1620s.

I started keeping the outdoor journal in 1997. It is a real nice leather bound journal. It definitely helps out. For example, years ago, I was walleye fishing up at smithville on March 7th. It was cold and gray with just a little breeze out of the west. I didn't catch any walleye, didn't even sniff em. However, I was randomly cruising around and drifing over some river channels and got into some real nice slab crappie schools in 27 feet of water. I would now have a place to start should I want to go crappie fishing in late Feb or early march. As far as the other journal, my wife got it for me when we had our first child. She got one for me when I got my first hunting dog too, and now that she is gone, its cool to read back and remember some great times. My son is 8, so we just recently went on our first road trip with just the two of us to Bennet Springs. It is well documented with all the little cool things he did and said along the way. It'll be fun to look back on someday.

tooge 01-13-2011 01:55 PM

also, remember, it doesn't really matter if you write down everything that happens every day. Some is better than none. btw, my dog is gone, not my wife.

You sound like the parent I would try to be like.

tooge 01-13-2011 01:57 PM

Heh, thanks for the compliment. I'm sure down the road there will be a "had to bust my best little buds ass today for the first time. Found him getting into my beer with his friends" entry in the journal.

Inspector 01-13-2011 02:45 PM

I could never remember what I did by the end of the day.

I may need to get that checked out. But I'll probably forget.

Hog's Gone Fishin 01-13-2011 03:43 PM

I had one but all the pages got stuck together so I pitched it.

MOhillbilly 01-13-2011 03:49 PM

i drink so i can forget things. why would i want a hard copy?

Rain Man 01-13-2011 03:53 PM

I did an experiment about a dozen years ago where I kept one. I accidentally found it a couple of years ago and it was interesting to see how trivial all of my concerns at the time really were.

Over-Head 01-13-2011 04:00 PM

I do and have done (kept a jurnal) since grade 6 when our teacher made it a Term project.
Amazing how I can go back 12-15years (in my trucking career) and see things like

*actuall excerpt from my jurnal*

Jan 13 - 1997
Here we go, I walk in Xxxxxx says the Boss man wants me in Dispatch.
Yeah him and his fat **** brother were sitting there with a smile on thier face, and a bag of 250 pills on the desk. (someones aboiut to get mighty busy this week..GUESS WHO????
Funny how they "need me to do an overnighter to Dallas that teh company man ****ed up, yet last week left me hanging in Cali.
Called the wife to tell her I was on my way back out which led to another screaming match, thank **** I hate children...I can't imagine how much worse it could be with that woman if kids were involved..
Between her and my old man, the amount i'm snorting and drinking, I'm hoping I can finally just be dead this year and get it over with already. I'm living a nightmare of a life I want to stop, I try, but no one seems to want to let me. The drugs and booze seem to be my only friends in life these days. Dad will be the first to ream me a new asshole for popping pills, but sure as **** don't mind the revenue 3 rounders a week Toronto to Dallas brings in.

To things like

Jan `13- 2011

Snow day today....me and the Mrs went out and made a snoiwman with the lil guy, during a lul in teh weather.
Its days like this that help me escape teh bitterness of my past, and think about how lucky I am...I mean hell , just 10 years ago I'd have been looking for a fix on my day off, not a snow shovel and mitten to go play with my son

No. I didn't know guys did this. Plus I could see it coming back to haunt me one day.

Iowanian 01-13-2011 04:46 PM

It's a great idea if you want your wife to find it someday while you're fishing and read about how you BuFu'd Jill ********** in Oct 98.

Or during sentencing....

"your honor, my husband, his witnesses and his attorney have told you that Sec has never done anything like this before and it's out of character. I'd like you to know that this asshole won't take me back to Mexico for a vacation this Feb, and his journal from 1973 shows that he pooped on the hood of Becky Johnson's Ford Fairlane, proving that this is not an isolated incident."

[voiceover] So where are you? You're in some motel room. You just - you just wake up and you're in - in a motel room. There's the key. It feels like maybe it's just the first time you've been there, but perhaps you've been there for a week, three months. It's - it's kind of hard to say. I don't - I don't know. It's just an anonymous room.

EXACTLY why I have done so.

KC Jones 01-14-2011 07:22 AM

My wife has several. After returning from a trip to her grandmothers funeral and helping wind down the "estate" she went through them with black marker and edited them. She said there were things in some passages that would only hurt people if they read them after she's gone and she'd never want to have that kind of legacy. I never asked what they found in her grandmothers diaries, but it must have shaken up her Dad and Uncles to have that kind of effect.

Don't take it personal, I was just referring to the fact that MOSt Raiders fans live in a delusional state of mind and mostly due to the amount of drugs they are injesting. the ones that aren't drug addicts are non users simply because they haven't found the right connection from behind prison bars.
