Colts cut Bob Sanders

Bob Sanders, the safety whose tremendous talent has been overshadowed by his inability to stay healthy, has been released by the Indianapolis Colts.

Colts owner Jim Irsay revealed the news on Twitter, thanking Sanders for his contributions to the team, noting that he had a Super Bowl interception and a defensive player of the year award to his credit.

When he’s healthy, Sanders is nothing short of one of the best players in the NFL. He had an impact on the Colts’ defense that few players in the league can match, which is why at the end of the 2007 season he was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year and rewarded with a contract that made him the league’s highest-paid safety.

But he just hasn’t been able to stay on the field since then: In the last three seasons Sanders has played in nine regular-season games and missed 39.

Sanders has indicated that he knows he’s going to need to take a pay cut, and the Colts may still be able to re-sign him. But first he’ll test the free agent market. He’s free to sign, right now, with any team that’s willing to take a chance on a talented but injury-plagued former star.

Interesting.

He was such a great player. I really regret that I never got to see him play.

The obligatory kick the tires, see if he'd sign as a back up....

boogblaster 02-18-2011 10:35 AM

is he washed up

Rams Fan 02-18-2011 10:36 AM

If he could stay healthy, he'd be a great pickup.

HighChief 02-18-2011 10:37 AM

No way. Don't want him. Great talent, just can't stay on the field.

DaKCMan AP 02-18-2011 10:39 AM

He's played in 48 games over his 7 year career. That's less than half of each season.

The Franchise 02-18-2011 10:39 AM

At this point....I wouldn't want him. Kendrick Lewis is only going to get better and signing Sanders is going to take away playing time from him. Well....the 6 games that he would be healthy.

Earning the name "Big Hit" comes with a price.

Dante84 02-18-2011 10:44 AM

We have zero depth at Safety. If Berry or Lewis goes down, so goes the defense.

Why would we not sign him?

HotRoute 02-18-2011 10:44 AM

Should have happened awhile ago

You realize of course that kicking the tires would put him on IR.

ToxSocks 02-18-2011 10:51 AM

WTF? I thought Bob Sanders wasn't real?

Because there is less than a 50/50 chance he will actually be able to play.

Look, I'm a Colts fan. I loved Bob Sanders when he's on the field. Unforunately, there is no reason to expect him to be on the field.

I wish him nothing but the best, but I'm hopnig he retires so he can walk when he's 40.

How convenient that he was cut, isn't it? I've said it before and I'll say it again. He was nothing but an invention of the NFL's marketing department. It was brilliant. At some point he'll go into the hall of fame, and when he's introduced a spokesman from Bud Light will step to the podium and say, "Gotcha. Drink Bud Light."

I'm whole heartily think that he'll be a Raven by next season.

Sanders to sign with donks-he can sit on the bench with their other D players.

Rain Man 02-18-2011 12:47 PM

Sanders said that he'd like to continue his career, and is considering going on Injured Reserve for the Canadian Football League.

Now that's just unnecessary. That won't heal 'til 2012.
