Rock N Poll: Round 2, Heat 10

2/3rds of the way through the second round, and it remains tough sledding to winnow down the candidates. Here you go.

Bugeater 03-27-2011 06:17 PM

I still have votes for sale for R2H9.

Rain Man 03-27-2011 06:24 PM

My rankings:

Rocket Man, Elton John - Edges out the song below for the #1 vote. I have fond memories of Valerie Bertinelli playing this song on her record player in a poignant episode of One Day at a Time, and now I mentally associate the song with a smokin' hot teenage Valerie Bertinelli.

Old Time Rock N Roll, Bob Seger - Great song. Could be #1, but I don't associate it with a smokin' hot teenage Valerie Bertinelli.

Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd - Wasn't really familiar with this song prior to the tournament, but I like it. Give it that old-time #3 vote.

Foreplay/Long Time, Boston - I really like Boston's music, but this isn't one of their best.

Crazy Train, Ozzy Osbourne* - Why is that asterisk there? Why? Why does it keep showing up? I need to know! Great guitar in this song, by the way, but the vocals and lyrics don't wow me.

Hair Of The Dog, Nazareth - Ranked #6 primarily because of the cool title.

Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Smashing Pumpkins - Okay title.

Wicked Garden, Stone Temple Pilots - The title doesn't do much for me.

A vote for Rocket Man is a vote for a smokin' hot teenage Valerie Bertinelli. And I'm not an audiophile because she was older than me when my fond memories formed, so that doesn't count as audiophilia.

I gotta vote for Foreplay/Long Time, that's a classic. And anything by Floyd is pretty much an automatic vote for me. Can't decide between Ozzy and STP for my third.

Do you remember seeing a smokin' hot teenage Valerie Bertinelli back in the late 70s?

:spock: What song by Boston is better?

And I too have fond memories of VB, so I left her pic in the quote.

Yes, and I remember seeing one in this thread, but I don't recall that episode of One Day at a Time you are referring to so I'm not making the same mental association to the song.

She was sad about something and she was playing it in her room and her sister came in to talk to her about it. I remember it like it was yesterday, other than the plot and anything other than a smokin' hot teenage Valerie Bertinelli. I went ahead and posted her picture again too, and think perhaps everyone in the thread should put this picture in their posts.

Rock and Roll band, definitely. More than a Feeling. Perhaps Smokin'.

I'm not going to give anyone trouble about voting for Boston, though. Any vote for Boston is a good vote.

Speaking of her sister, wtf were they thinking when the paired that nasty skank up with her? I'd better post the pic of Valerie again so I don't think about the other one any more.

Chiefnj2 03-27-2011 06:51 PM

1. Crazy Train. One of Ozzy and Rhandy's best.
2. Rocket Man.
3. Bob Seger.

Hard not to vote for Comfortably Numb.

That older one annoyed the daylights out of me even when I was 15. She was disgusting. I recall that she's the daughter of someone of celebrity status, so I can only assume that she got her job because of connections. I don't know that she ever did anything after that, while Valerie had a long career in TV movies and weight-loss commercials.

Here's the picture again.

Mackenzie Phillips. Daughter of Papa John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. Carried on an incestuous affair with said father for several years as an adult. Treated for addiction on Drew Pinski's Celebrity Rehab and Sober House.

I may quote Valerie Bertinelli's photo in every thread for a week.

She didn't deserve to be in the same room with Valerie.

I'm liking the idea of posting Valerie in every thread. Maybe one of the mods will help us promote "Smokin' Hot Teenage But Over 18 Valerie Bertinelli Appreciation Month" in April. Let's get it started with our sigs.

patteeu 03-27-2011 07:44 PM

Neck and neck for my first two picks:

#1 Ozzy Osbourne, Crazy Train
#2 Bob Seger, Old Time Rock N Roll

My third could have gone to Smashing Pumpkins, but instead I picked

#3 Boston, Foreplay/Long Time

All this talk of MacKenzie Phillips turned me completely off on Rocket Man. :shake:

Now that's a cause I can support.

RJ 03-27-2011 08:55 PM

Elton John, Nazareth, Floyd.

Personally, I always thought Razamanaz was the best song nazareth ever did.

Great Expectations 03-27-2011 09:09 PM

Pumpkins, Pink, STP

I don't feel any need for the Over 18 disclaimer as I was under 18 when I had most of my Valerie Bertinelli fantasies. As far as I know that is perfectly legal.

Edit - "most of" meaning until about 10 minutes ago.

Reaper16 03-27-2011 09:41 PM

"Comfortably Numb," "Foreplay/Long Time," and "Rocket Man."

Phobia 03-27-2011 09:47 PM

I voted for Boston, STP and sucks. Never been a huge Floyd or Elton John fan even though I do recognize their greatness.

Smashing Pumpkins mostly annoys me as does the Crazy Train song. Nazareth - not even their best song.

Phobia 03-27-2011 09:48 PM

Just to clarify, I'm mostly a fan of 80's metal.

Somewhat of a subject change, but: radio is going to have to come up with a new format soon. They've got oldies stations, and they have classic rock stations, but what happens in 5-10 years? When all of the late 80's-early 2000's rock is too dated to play on normal rock radio? What are they gonna' call that format?

They're going to call it Jack.

Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Seger, Pink Floyd

I tend to listen to our Jack station during the rare times I listen to the radio (my truck doesn't have one). We have a classic rock station, but I prefer the variety on Jack compared to the same Aerosmith, AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Led Zep songs over and over and over. Jack does play some totally lame songs, but it is worth it to mix things up a bit over the classic rut station.

Chiefburger 03-27-2011 10:39 PM

1)"Bullet with Butterfly Wings," to me, represents the other side of being "Comfortably Numb." A Grammy winner, the song also features one of rock's best drum performances, IMO.
2)"Rocket Man"
3)"Comfortably Numb"

DJ's left nut 03-27-2011 10:44 PM

Crazy Train - easy #1.

Hair of the Dog - strong #2 (driving rock song right there)

Old Time Rock and Roll - coinflip #3; could've gone to Boston or Floyd.

Mr. Flopnuts 03-27-2011 11:44 PM

This is one of the tougher heats for me so far. I hate to see a song like Hair of the Dog go down, as well as Old Time Rock N Roll.

But I had to vote for Pink Floyd, Elton John, and Ozzy on this. Those songs are all legendary AFAIC.

I know. Not all of my votes are based on musical history. I can't help but vote for some of my very favorites. I think the 3 I voted for are all awesome, and fit my criteria for what I think this poll should mean.

There have been a couple of times I've voted for songs that weren't my personal favorite in favor of something I thought was more meaningful to the overall progression of the genre. Inspiration is a big part of music to me, even if it's not my own.

Bugeater 03-28-2011 12:18 AM

It's got such a crazy driving beat. I feel like marching into battle every time I hear the ratatat snarl. I suspect many here can't get past Billy Corgan's nasally shrill or emo look. They prefer an old dude who slurs when he's not chewing bats.

Shutting it down. Rock N Poll spokeswoman Valerie Bertinelli announces the following songs that will move on:

Comfortably Numb
Crazy Train
Rocket Man (which coincidentally was one of Valerie's favorite songs on One Day at a Time)

Given how strong the Seger support was in Heat 1, I'm surprised that he didn't do better. In Round 1 he was being given all sorts of strong verbal support.

Great songs by Bob Seger are too numerous to mention. Old Time Rock N Roll was a decent Seger entry into this competition because it is upbeat (no one can complain that it's not Rock N Roll, except Reaper who most likely thinks it's metal) and because it's well known.
