Rock N Poll: Round 2, Heat 11

Okay, here we go. Let's see who else will rise to the third round.

Gadzooks 03-28-2011 11:41 AM

First in.

patteeu 03-28-2011 11:42 AM

Any Van Halen in this round?

http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/media/...69a970b-pi.jpg

Chiefnj2 03-28-2011 11:45 AM

1. George Harrison's Wife.
2. Why not just call it Teenage Waste Land?
3. Bernie Taupin's wife.

Crush 03-28-2011 11:45 AM

Remember, kids, that Baba O'Riley is mistakenly known as Teenage Wasteland. This song better make it out of this heat or Sofa King will be getting an angry-whiny PM from me.

patteeu 03-28-2011 11:45 AM

#1 The Clash, Should I Stay or Should I Go
#2 Rage Against The Machine, Killing In The Name Of
#3 Black Sabbath, Paranoid

rambleonthruthefog 03-28-2011 11:49 AM

casey jones and truckin' by the grateful dead need to make it into one of these polls. i missed a few votes, so i'm sorry and disregard if they already had their chance.

Garcia Bronco 03-28-2011 11:51 AM

Elton John is not, nor has he ever been "Rock n' Roll"

I agree. He's actually metal.

Los Pollos Hermanos 03-28-2011 11:58 AM

I only voted for The Who.

kc rush 03-28-2011 11:58 AM

The Who
The Clash
The Dominoes and Derek

DaFace 03-28-2011 12:00 PM

Weak heat. Pretty disappointing for the 2nd round.

They had the misfortune of being in the same heat with I Ran by Flock of Seagulls and, as you might expect, they were obliterated.

Paranoid, that is Ozzy's trademark song* (r.i.p. Randy Rhoads)

LA Women, the Doors need to move on at some point

Should I go or should I stay, Thanks Mr. Fax for setting me strait that it was Clash and not Cheap Trick, however I could swear they did a cover, I couldn't find it anywhere.

Phobia 03-28-2011 12:11 PM

I like almost all of these songs. I'm a huge Clapton fan and almost voted for Layla. Also grew up with Highway and Paranoid. But there are few songs that get me rocking like Killing in the Name Of.... So that's one of mine. I'm also a sucker for The Doors and The Who even though their popularity was in the 70's when I was but a wee lad. So there you have it:
RATM
Doors
Who

Rain Man 03-28-2011 12:11 PM

This is an interesting heat for me, because it contains lots of songs that I couldn't name, but I know the music. My rankings are:

Tiny Dancer, Elton John - Clear #1, primarily because I like the song. I don't know what it's about, but I like it.

Killing in the Name Of, Rage Against the Machine - Before the tournament I wouldn't have picked Rage Against the Machine, but this is a good song. #2 vote.

Layla, Derek and the Dominoes - Like the guitar. #3 vote.

Should I Stay or Should I Go, The Clash - Fun song and I like it, but that doesn't get you into the third round. It almost does, though.

Baba O'Riley, the Who - I think it ranked higher for me in the second round than in the first, but no vote.

Paranoid, Black Sabbath - I like it, but it's not something I'd listen to a lot.

LA Woman, The Doors - It's an okay song. Nothing against it, but that's not worth a third-round slot.

Highway to Hell, AC/DC - It's actually not a bad song. Probably the strongest 8th-place song I've had in the tournament. But it's still 8th.

Blue jean baby?

Tiny dancer in my hand?

But oh how it feels so real

That's the magic of music. We get to experience worlds that we otherwise cannot imagine.

So, who all didn't vote for Tiny Dancer? Hmmmm?

I'd just say pop. I like a lot of his stuff, but it isn't rock.

It's sort of like Johnny Cash being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nothing wrong with Johnny Cash, but seriously, that's just reeruned. It would be like putting Favre in our Ring of Fame.

Yea, id have to say that too....Im a little too young, but im thinking that music categories were alot more broad back in the 60's and 70's....everything today is so specialized and segmented. If Stevie Wonder and Elton John came out with the same music today, in no way would they be considered Rock and Roll.

Do not know. I'm probably less than that. I think I ended up around 90% for the first round but now I'm closer to 40%. Don't think any of my choices will make it out of this poll.

To be fair though, I changed my voting for this round. I was voting more classics last round. Now that I've analyzed your instructions I'm voting strictly for the songs I'd rather listen to on my iPod.

And I think your criterion is the way to go. It's easy to pick a song because "common knowledge" says it's a classic. But I think here we want to pick out the best song based on our own collective tastes. Otherwise, I'd just put up a Stairway to Heaven vs. Freebird poll and call it good.

Elton John is definitely rock. In the mid-70s when KY-102 was at it's peak they had a TV advertisement and Elton John was featured right along side Led Zeplin, The Who, Pink Floyd and all the other bands of the day.

His Greatest Hit Volume I was issued by the US government to every kid, right along with Rumors, Frampton Comes Alive, Boston, Hotel California, etc.

My father-in-law got all bent out of shape when he heard the song "The Bitch is Back", just like parents do nowadays.

It is just a distortion to not consider Elton John to be rock.

I basically agree, although I think it's OK for everyone to decide on what criteria they want to use. I think it's OK for DJ's Left Nut to decide to only choose "suckage" if he doesn't choose any of the other songs. I think it's OK for Phobia to choose the songs he likes the most right now. I think it's OK for KC Tattoo to only choose songs either made by Guns N Roses or covered by them. I think it's OK for Mr. Flopnuts to vote on the basis of his Rolling Stones most influential rock of all time cheatsheet. The only thing that's not OK is for anyone to pay attention to Reaper's definition of metal.

My personal criteria is that I only vote for songs that Omaha finds cheesy.

Reaper16 03-28-2011 02:29 PM

"Tiny Dancer," "Layla," "Should I Stay or Should I Go"

Though I'm not a real fan of GNR, I don't see how GNR's "Sweet Child O'Mine" loses. It's got the legitimacy of a rock class but not the staleness of Stairway or Freebird. I'm interested in knowing what everyone thinks is the favorite at this point.

Easy 6 03-28-2011 02:37 PM

AC/DC, Rage & Sabbath

In his heyday, Elton John was definitely considered rock & roll... and so it remains today.

I am hard pressed to have a "favorite" GnR song, they all rock.

Coma, Estranged, November Rain, Don't Cry, One in a Million, Sweet Child, just a few that are above and beyond any thing else out there. imhgnfnrfo

Try playing Estranged on guitar, that is brilliantly done by Slash not many could pull that off.

Frankly, I'm a little worried about voter fatigue if we continue beyond the bracket. You're welcome to pursue it, but I think it won't get as good a participation.

And also, there's no way any Springsteen songs could be put in anything called "loser bracket". It'd have to be a "misunderstood" bracket.

See, this was my point......how the genre has gotten so fragmented over time. John is no harder hitting than Phill Collins, Stevie Wonder or Bruce Hornsby, yet nobody considers them Rock and Roll. All of them great artists though.....

Like i mentioned earlier, if Elton John released the same songs today, no way would modern rock radio even touch it.

Its just strange to me.....

Elton John's early stuff seemed to have a lot of rock in it, I think. I suspect that he's mellowed over age. I think he was viewed as one of many flamboyant rock acts in that era, a la David Bowie.

And why are you not supporting my new cause in my sig? I thought we were friends, and I care deeply about getting this holiday off the ground.

If you do the signs poll and let it in if it beats suckage, then I'm down for the cause.

How do you narrow it down to 3?

Should I Stay or Should I Go - Best song of the heat. The Clash kicked ass.

Tiny Dancer - Just a beautiful song. And I love the scene from Almost Famous.

Paranoid - Makes me want to bang my head against a wall. In a good way, of course.

Ooh, Sabbath and The Who are gaining ground, can the night crew prevent an atrocity from happening? Stay tuned...

I think Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was very much a rock album.
