Rock N Poll: Round 2, Heat 12

Round 3 is a misty shadow on the far horizon, but we can see it. Land ho!

Bugeater 03-28-2011 05:14 PM

Not voting for Clapton is like not voting for America.

Rain Man 03-28-2011 05:24 PM

Black Dog, Led Zeppelin - This is a song that not just anyone can sing. Great music, great voice, great song. #1 vote.

Paint It Black, Rolling Stones - More people can sing this song, but it's a great composition. #2 vote.

American Woman, The Guess Who - #3 vote. Good song. Not in the top tier, in my opinion, but worth a vote.

Let It Rain, Eric Clapton - I have nothing against this song. It's pretty decent. It was really close to getting my #3 vote.

All Along the Watchtower, U2 - Okay.

Locomotive Breath, Jethro Tull - It's a song. Appears to be music. I yawned.

Rockin' in the Free World, Neil Young - This guy annoys the daylights out of me.

Mr. Brownstone, Guns N Roses - Sorry. I just don't see it. Give them the home version of the game and send them home.

Philistinism is a derogatory term used to describe a particular attitude or set of values. A person called a Philistine (in the relevant sense) is said to despise or undervalue art, beauty, intellectual content, or spiritual values. Philistines are also said to be materialistic, to favor conventional social values unthinkingly, and to favor forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal (e.g. kitsch).

How in the holy hell does Clapton only have 5 votes?

Why not a single Def Leppard song in any of this?

I'm pretty sure there was at least one somewhere in the first round.

Our Founding Fathers beg to differ. :)

I nearly voted suckage.

"American Woman," "Paint It Black," "Rockin' in the Free World."

It seems to be getting easier to make my picks instead of harder. That doesn't bode well.

#1 Led Zeppelin, Black Dog
#2 Neil Young, Rockin' In The Free World
#3 Guess Who, American Woman

Suckage came in 4th.

Holy cow. Some of the words being used here are longer than the average seclark post. I didn't even realize you were a snooty art critic.

Phobia 03-28-2011 07:20 PM

I voted Tull - how many rock bands can insert a featured FLUTE solo and pull it off?
Black Dog - because I once owned a black dog and I find the intro to be one the most recognizable bits of music I've ever heard.
Brownstone - It's not my favorite G&R bit but I listened carefully to all the other contestants and I just didn't find one I liked better than Brownstone and I would have been loathe to vote suckage.

Phobia 03-28-2011 07:26 PM

I think lots of people are just voting name recognition without taking time to actually listen.

Which is your favorite song between:
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/fwj6ZGMF_uA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and

Chiefnj2 03-28-2011 07:36 PM

Neil Young.

That's it. Dozens of songs in other rounds that I'd take over the rest in this heat.

KurtCobain 03-28-2011 08:12 PM

Are you sure this is Round 2? Suckage.

Awesome intro, especially live. Tull was the first concert I ever saw. I was 13, a friend's older brother took us. Locomotive Breath blew me away.

rambleonthruthefog 03-28-2011 08:41 PM

Love Clapton but that particular song is a little too happy for my taste. His darker stuff is what appeals to me.

Slainte 03-29-2011 08:12 AM

Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Guess Who

This is just too tough of a heat. Black Dog and Paint it Black could each win this contest. American Woman and Rockin in the Free World might be the two best songes ever to come out of Canada. The Clapton song is great, and the Hendrix version of Dylan's classic All Along the Watchtower is almost as good as BD and PiB.

I guess this is your way of finally "coming out". I admire your courage for doing it on a board where you are so well known.

Neil Young, Stones & Zep.

Rain Man 03-30-2011 01:20 AM

Okay, shutting down one of our least close heats. Moving on are:
